Arthur 013

In this episode of Arthur I talk to comedian, writer and producer Scott Aukerman. Scott's been around the LA comedy scene for years, and got his first big break when he was hired by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross to write and occasionally appear on one of the best sketch shows of all time, HBO's Mr. Show with Bob and David.

Nowadays Scott is most known for hosting the popular podcast Comedy Bang Bang, which has spawned a TV talkshow of the same name on IFC, and for producing/curating Comedy Bang Bang the live standup show, formerly known as Comedy Death-Ray, at the UCB Theatre in Los Angeles, for the past ten years.

I was fortunate to meet up with Scott on a recent trip to Los Angeles. We talked about showbiz, comedy writing, talkshows and some other stuff, and I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode of Arthur I talk to actor and writer Pat Healy. You may recognize Pat as the rude pharmacist in Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, or as the "how punk!" comic book store guy in Ghost World, or as the sweet-natured wannabe record producer in Craig Zobel's excellent indie comedy-drama Great World of Sound, or as any of the other characters he's played in dozens of movies and TV shows over the years. Pat has also written for HBO's In Treatment, and is currently adapting the book Eating with the Enemy into an HBO movie starring James Gandolfini.

Right now Pat has two movies in theaters and on DVD. In the controversial Compliance, which caused a stir at the Sundance film festival in January, he is reunited with Zobel, and plays a man claiming to be a police officer, who pressures the manager of a fast food restaurant to degrade one of her employees on the suspicion that the employee is a thief. And in The Innkeepers, Ti West's horror movie set in a haunted hotel in Connecticut, Pat co-stars with Sara Paxton as hotel receptionists working one final weekend before the hotel is shut down.

I recently talked to Pat about both of these films, and about a lot of other things too. It was a nice little conversation, and I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode of Arthur I talk to writer-director Jason Woliner about starting out in showbiz as a young boy, transitioning from actor to director, being obsessed with Mr. Show, dealing with the concept of fans, being the fourth member of Human Giant, and working on Eagleheart, the show starring Chris Elliott that Jason is co-writing (with Andrew Weinberg and Michael Koman) and directing for [adult swim]. Jason is truly one of the Good Guys and I really hope you enjoy our conversation. And if you do, tell a friend!

It's sherry time! In this episode of Arthur - the big 10! - it's back to the Skype machine for a nice conversation with funnyman Paul F. Tompkins. We talk about his new standup special Laboring Under Delusions, what it's like being a guest on lots and lots of podcasts, the difference between standup and sketch, working on Mr. Show, how social media is really cool!, and other stuff. Paul is one of the funniest guys around, and if you're not familiar with his work, what is wrong with you and frankly how have you found this podcast without knowing about it.

Small audio disclaimer: I have a new mic and a new mixer board, and I don't really know how to use them yet, so my audio sounds slightly off. Also, Skype decided to mess with the quality of Paul's voice towards the end of our conversation. I don't know why. But it's not that bad, honestly.

On episode #9 of Arthur I wind up the ol' Skype machine and call comedy great Jon Glaser. We talk about his early days in Chicago, getting into Second City, moving to New York to work on The Dana Carvey Show and then Late Night with Conan O'Brien. We also chat about his very funny TV show Delocated, which is currently in its third season on [adult swim]. And obviously we had to discuss all the Swedish hockey dudes playing for the Detroit Red Wings, Jon's favorite team. And there's plenty more too - so much, in fact, that I had to call him up again a week later to continue our conversation.

So this is a two-parter, with a neat break in the middle, during which you can pause the podcast, have a cup of coffeee, and then resume. It's really up to you. And speaking of coffee, get ready to hear about a scintillating encounter between Jon and me (Martin!) in a New York coffeeshop almost five years ago!

Hello? Is anyone still out there? Or have you all abandoned this podcast? I can't say I blame you. Anyway, I know it sounds shocking, but here's a brand new episode of Arthur, the first since September, and it's a good one! I sit down with Fred Armisen, longtime cast member of Saturday Night Live and co-creator/star of the amazingly funny Portlandia. Fred was in Stockholm recently to promote Portlandia, and I talked to him about comedy, drumming, the need to be on TV, Tim & Eric, and much more over some fish and risotto (he had the fish, I had the risotto).

My goodness! A new episode of Arthur! How long has it been? What year is this? Is Avatar still number one at the box office? The answer to the first question is "June". I don't know about the other ones.

But what I do know is that, yes, Arthur is finally back! After a long summer hiatus we return with yet another all-English-speaking episode, this time with the drummer who puts the "super" in Superchunk, the comedian who puts the "best" in The Best Show - Jon Wurster!

Jon is a veteran on the American indie rock scene - he's a long-time member of Superchunk, bangs the drums for The Mountain Goats, and has played with everybody from Bob Mould to The New Pornographers. But Jon is also one of the funniest guys around - for years he's been responsible for some of the best comedy the world has seen, together with his partner-in-laff Tom Scharpling. Together they are Scharpling & Wurster, a comedy duo born out of The Best Show on WFMU, a weekly radio show hosted by Tom. And if by this point you're unfamiliar with The Best Show, I don't know what to tell you.

So, Martin dusts off the ol' Skype and asks the switchboard operator to put in a call to North Carolina, where Jon dwells when he's not on tour or in the studio doing tons of blow and recording rock albums. Jon and Martin talk about documentaries, rock biographies, REM, forgotten Best Show calls, and much more. It's a good time!

Aaaand we're back! It's a regular Podcasters Without Borders, as Martin welcomes Arthur's first international guest, comedian and author Julie Klausner to the show! Topics discussed include Woody Allen, John Waters, Martin liking old people stuff, writing: when and where, and salt licorice.

This conversation was conducted over Skype, so please forgive the so-so sound quality, and the fact that Julie occasionally sounds auto-tuned. (You'll be fine.)
