#17: Million (with special guest Dave Ramsey)

Hogan has special guest Dave Ramsey on to continue the self-made millionaire conversation.  In fact, this episode is called MILLION because that word touches everything Hogan shares. He also gives his Takeaway to jump-start your millionaire mentality and then features a story spotlight about Terry, a retired teacher who happens to have a net worth of over 1.3 MILLION dollars! That’s right, a teacher who became a self-made millionaire. Also, the Retire Inspired podcast has a reason to celebrate the word MILLION: the podcast has officially crossed over ONE MILLION PLAYS because of you VIPs! So join the celebration with a few episode goodies.

0:00—WELCOME

1:43—CONVERSATION WITH DAVE RAMSEY

29:28—POST-CONVERSATION BREAKDOWN—THE SELF-MADE MILLIONAIRE

Hogan breaks down the conversation with Dave.

HAVE A WHY. You must tap into that reason to keep you motivated and millionaire-bound.

STAY A STUDENT. Self-made millionaires study other millionaires and their practices.

FOLLOW AN INVESTMENT STRATEGY. Be consistent, and think long-term; make sure it’s easy enough to explain it to a 7th grader.

31:27—THE TAKEAWAY

Hogan wants you to get feisty if you want to reach that millionaire status.

Be bold.

Go on the offensive and grow your retirement fund.

Get on the defensive to protect your wealth.

40:29—STORY SPOTLIGHT - "DRIVEN"

Meet Terry, the 72-year-old millionaire. From poverty to learning disabilities, this woman overcame it all to reach a net worth of 1.3 million.

47:03—CELEBRATION AND SURPRISES

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS! Hogan’s team surprises him during his announcement that the Retire Inspired podcast has hit its first million plays. He had no idea how big the celebration would be.

So how do you celebrate such a milestone? With a cake? That’s a good start, but we have a gift for you VIPs. We could not have passed one million plays without you. So here’s your gift: a rap music anthem! Only the preview of it debuts on the podcast, but the link to the entire song is beneath the following lyrics.

A MILLION STRONG (VIP ANTHEM)

Written/performed by David Wilkinson  Produced by James Childs

Humble beginnings, small Kentucky town,

Momma Hogan raised him right, but still he looked around and wondered,

“Should I go play ball, or get in the ring and fight?

But God, do you have a bigger dream for me tonight

that I cannot see with my own eyes?”

That’s when Hogan finally realized that all he had do was believe

that one day God would put him up on a stage and put him on a podcast mic

and rock A MILLION PLAYS!

No, never going back ‘cause he knows that…

I was made for this, and I ain’t going out ‘til I take it…

what I came to get, I was made for this…

and I will never lose I was made for this… just face it…

I was made for this…

Yeah, we’re calling all VIPs, saddle up!

Our posse is ready ‘cause Hogan’s on the hunt

A man on a mission, nomadic with vision, so make your decision:

Will you choose to leave all your broken dreams behind you?

And ride to the fight to destroy what will bind you?

The anthem we ride to, it didn’t start today but when you pressed play

Now a million strong…

Believe your dreams are coming true, grab the reigns and sing along

‘Cause this is your song…

I was made for this, and I ain’t going out ‘til I take it… what I came to get…

I was made for this, and I will never lose I was made for this… just face it…

Other featured segments include Hear from the People, Retire Inspired Christmas poetry, and Hogan’s patented 3-Point Takeaway.

0:28 – WELCOME

1:43 – FINANCIAL MOVES TO MAKE BEFORE THE NEW YEAR

Chris offers seven actions to take:

Assess your debt. Understand what you owe and where you owe it.

Revisit your budget. Sit down and determine exactly where your money goes each month.

Review your retirement accounts. Do you have any 401(k) accounts from a former employer that need to be rolled over into an IRA? If so, make sure the money transfers directly between accounts.

Check your insurance policies. Review your current life insurance policy to make sure you have the coverage your family needs. If you have questions or need help, go to chrishogan360.com and click “Dream Team” to connect with one of our insurance ELPs. These are people Hogan trusts.

Update beneficiaries. Now is the time to make changes to the designated beneficiaries you’ve named in your will and other legal documents, including your investment accounts. You can update these by filling out a form for 401(k)s, IRAs, life insurance policies, and other plans. Check with the providers of these accounts for the correct paperwork.

Look at income tax withholdings. Each year, you want to know exactly where you stand on your income taxes. Don’t let this to sneak up on you in March. Go to chrishogan360.com and click “Dream Team” to get connected with one of our tax ELPs. They have the heart of a teacher and want you to avoid any hassles from the IRS.

Review your portfolio. Set up an appointment with a financial professional to review your investment portfolio. If there’s anything you don’t understand—from the fees you pay to the types of funds you’re building—ask questions. You are in charge of your financial future, so you’re responsible for understanding your investments.

Here are three bonus actions:

Do medical check-ups. This is an area many people forget. Before the end of the year, take advantage of all yearly check-ups that you have paid for throughout the year through your insurance premiums. Do you need an eye exam, a physical, or other medical exams? If so, get an appointment and go before December 31. Also, be aware of your healthcare costs and expenses. Does your current policy meet your needs? Is there a way to get the same or better coverage at a lower cost?

Update wills and trusts. A common misconception is that you only create and talk about a will one time. People are not aware that you can update your will as many times as you want, as long as the updates are properly witnessed and notarized according to your state law. Also, you may want to talk with an estate planning attorney to see if a trust makes sense for your situation.

Set new goals. The new year brings new opportunities for everyone. Be clear on what you want to achieve financially, physically, spiritually, and as a family. The only way to be proactive is to put the goals in writing and take steps to reach them.

16:38 – HOGAN’S 10 POINTS TO PROGRESS

Be a money boss. Start each month with a budget, listing income and expenses. Have a debt reduction plan. Use the debt snowball approach: List all your debts then attack them from smallest to largest. Establish an emergency fund. Be prepared for unexpected events (a car problem, home repair, hospital visit, etc.) by keeping an emergency fund on hand. Take control of your spending. Understand the difference between a want and a need. Set limits on spending, even if it means sacrificing your wants. Plan ahead. Look at the calendar and save money for upcoming expenses (holidays, travel, birthdays, etc.). Boost your income. Brainstorm ways you could earn extra money over the next three to six months (sell stuff you don’t need, have a garage sale, offer to tutor, etc). Get a head start on college. If you have children, start saving for college as soon as possible. You want to help them get an education without student loans. But don’t sacrifice your retirement fund in the process! Remember, kids can work their way through college. Plug in to the community. Volunteer for events in your area or help out at your church. Make a list of 10 friends and tell them about R:IQ and Financial Peace University as financial discussions come up. When people change, their community does too! Know your plan. Retirement is not an age; it’s a financial number! Decide on your retirement dream, discover your R:IQ, and determine a plan to get to that retirement number. Keep the right attitude. Progress is taking one step forward, one day at a time. Where you are now is the new starting point, so forget the past and start moving ahead.
