A Renegade Approach to Improving Your Mental and Emotional Skills for Lower Golf Scores with Stephen Ladd

579: Stephen Ladd is recognized as one of the top Golf Performance Coaches in the nation. He specializes in golf fitness, nutrition and mental game strategies. He founded Renegade Golf in 1994, a full decade before “golf fitness” became a buzz word. He teaches thousands of golfers of all levels from over 47 countries via the Internet and his books, videos and audio program how to train their bodies and brains for peak performance.  Stephen has taken a rather unorthodox path in terms of education and accumulation of knowledge, combining traditional academic environments, mentorships, and self-described “journeys”. As an undergraduate student, he studied exercise physiology, psychology, and philosophy. After graduating summa cum laude from Miami University, he continued his graduate work in East-West Psychology and Comparative Religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco from 1991-1993.

Advanced Green to Tee Course Management Techniques with Joe Hallett, PGA

We also discuss how to improve each round by using advanced course management techniques that includes looking at a hole backwards, the way it was designed, from green to tee. Stop Trying to Change Your Swing All By Yourself with John Kantarski

571 John Kantarski specializes in left handed golf. But after teaching thousands of golfers, he’s also noticed how frequently golfers, left or right handed, also believe they understand what went wrong after each swing, just compounding the problem. No matter how good a golfer is, without proper training, it’s hard to make changes with the knowledge of cause and effect. A Hank Haney certified instructor, John shares his background making changes, fixes, and insights.

Here’s the link to the bonus video Fred mentioned at the end of the show.  Fred sits down with Rocio Robles, General Manager of El Manglar Campo de Golf (Golf Course) Riviera Maya, Mexico. Operated by Vidanta Golf, El Manglar is a Jack Nicklaus Design 18 hole - Par 54 course. Even though each hole is a par 3, holes from the black tees (2923yds) range in length from 103-276 yards, with 10 of the holes being over 150 yards and 11 having water in play. The four longest holes, #4 (223yds), #13 (276yds), #14 (195yds), and #18 (195yds), all require you to carry either streams or lakes. We wouldn't be surprised if the slope from the back tees are over 133, but no rating or slope is offered.

Inserted throughout the interview with Rocio, Fred provides commentary, photos, and video from his round and a time-lapse of the sunrise from the beach.

This is an incredible property on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, south of Cancun, north of Playa del Carmen, that boasts 5 hotels, 14 impressive restaurants, the golf course, a large boutique that provides everything from groceries for your kitchen equipped condo, to a pharmacy, gifts, clothes, and more. Vidanta Riviera Maya also has a custom built 600 seat theatre for JOYA, the only Cirque du Soleil show in the world that has a full hour of pre-show entertainment while you indulge in champagne and an excellent dinner at your table before the show. In the full week that we stayed at the Mayan Palace, we never had a need or desire to leave the property.

567: A Thanksgiving Feast of the Greatest Golf Book Ever! THE MATCH with author Mark Frost

567: In our previous episode, actor Malcolm McDowell talked about his favorite golf book ever, which so happens to be mine too. “THE MATCH: The Day The Game of Golf Changed Forever” by Mark Frost was published in 2008, but is a great read of nonfiction and in today’s 24 hour news cycle, an unbelievable story that was never told before this book. The audio book and book are both available at Amazon and here’s the write up to the story:

The year: 1956. Four decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the ten-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery has just made a bet with fellow millionaire George Coleman. Lowery claims that two of his employees, amateur golfers Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi, cannot be beaten in a best-ball match. Lowery challenges Coleman to bring any two golfers of his choice to the course at 10 a.m. the next day to settle the issue. Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with his own power team: Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with fourteen major championships between them. In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day--legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played--comes to life with powerful, emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense.”

This interview was originally published in 2008. Happy Thanksgiving!

566: Show Me An Actor That’s a Good Golfer, And I’ll Show You An Actor That’s Not Working! With Actor Malcolm McDowell

Actor Malcolm McDowell is passionate about golf. This was an incredible opportunity to sit down and chat with him about his love of the sport, history and strategy, his appearance in the movie "Stroke of Genius" about Bobby Jones, “The Greatest Game Ever Played” and his first hole in one. Malcolm McDowell’s resume includes a wide range of roles that started in 1964 and includes Clockwork Orange from 1971 and continues today as a distinctive voice on video games like Call of Duty, the antagonist on the entertaining Amazon Original series, Mozart in the Jungle, and HBO’s Entourage.

564: A Club-focused Swing Can Be More Effective Than a Body-focused Swing

Manuel De la Torre was born above the golf shop at the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain, where his father Ángel de la Torre was the head golf professional. Angel was five-time Spanish National Golf Champion. Manuel's father's instruction and that of his father's friend and colleague Ernest Jones, served as the basis for de la Torre's instruction. His concepts for golf instruction have stood the test of time for over 60 years. He was head golf professional at Milwaukee Country Club teaching amateurs and tour professionals for more than 60 years.

Recorded in 2009, this conversation is just as valid today as it was when we originally spoke. Unfortunately Manuel De la Torre died in the Spring of 2016, but we were honored to hear his opinion on why golfers spend too much time focusing on their body parts during the swing. Every body is unique and moves it’s own way. That’s why understanding the role of the golf club may allow you to be a much more successful, and less stressed ball striker.

His book and DVD “Understanding The Golf Swing” are still available online. Here’s the address for the hardcover in Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Golf-Swing-Manuel-Torre/dp/1886346518/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478020703&sr=8-1&keywords=understanding+the+golf+swing

563: VIDEO Swing Analysis May Not Be As Helpful As You’d Like with Marc Solomon!

Marc Solomon of Golf Made Simple shares his entertaining passion for golf instruction and it doesn’t diminish when we discuss video swing analysis. If the key to trusting your swing is clearing your mind before each shot, then he may have a compelling argument.

562: Don't Change Your Clubs, Change Your Attitude for More Fun and Lower Scores!

562: Tommy Masters has been named Golf Digest Top 100 instructor multiple times. Among the great pieces of advice he shares in this episode is acknowledging that occasionally (or in host Fred Greene’s case frequently) you will have bad shots. Don’t brood over them, don’t even get upset. See a bad shot as an exciting challenge. Focus on how you will get out of trouble. Just remember Fred’s favorite saying “Never follow a bad shot with a stupid shot!”  Also, Tommy advices to practice a variety of shots with each club so that you won’t be intimidated by tough situations.

561: A Revolutionary Putter with a HUGE Sweet-spot that Delivers Truer Lines with Creator John Ambrose

561: John Ambrose is a retired airline pilot who has succeeded in developing a unique putter that takes USGA specs to their limits. The major manufacturers continue to produce putters that are the same basic design from 100 years ago. But John wasn’t satisfied. When you pull this putter out of your bag, you’ll find two things happen. First, your playing partners will want to try it and talk about it. Most importantly,  on your first stroke you’ll discover that the ball will go down your intended aiming line. In this episode, John and host Fred Greene talk about the advantages, history, and concept behind his L2 MOI MAXX putter.  While looking down the line before his first stroke, Fred realized why his putts were brushing the right side of the cup. Now his confidence to stay on his intended line has dramatically increased. You can watch this complete interview, unedited to see what John’s talking about on the GolfSmarterTV channel at https://youtu.be/DrYjRfDuMSc . For an added bonus, we’ve also published a short interview with John on the practice putting green as Fred and others take their first strokes with the putter. https://youtu.be/4lKObEvF1H4  This putter cannot be found in any retail location or pro shop, only at L2Putters.com.
