Holy S#%t! I’m Playing in the US Seniors Men’s Open Championship! with Larry Salk

Larry Salk played Tour Golf professionally in his 20's. It didn't work out the way he hoped and created a career in the tech industry. But he still loved to play a lot, and he played well. Well enough that at 55 he qualified as an Amateur to play in the 2017 US Senior Open Championship at Salem Country Club in MA. Even though he didn't make the cut, he had a great time and has great stories about the adventure. This is a story you won't find anywhere else.

The Internet is Killing Golf Instruction...and Probably Your Game!

600: Jim Waldron of the Balance Point Golf Schools has witnessed a huge shift in golf performance and instruction since the overwhelming amount of information that has been offered by high speed internet.  We call it instant gratification, Jim refers to it as Instant Contamination. There’s an intellectual exercise that should be incorporated into your practice and rounds, but because we have so much information to digest, it disappears in players who can’t understand why they’re not improving.

As promised, if you appreciate Jim's wisdom and perspective as much as me, and have not heard all that we’ve been blessed to share, here’s a list of each of the Golf Smarter episodes where he can be heard, including all the Premium Episodes that were never available to everyone till now!

12/18/07 #105 "Introducing Jim Waldron"

8/19/08 #140 "Being Paralyzed by Too Many Swing Thoughts"

Here's a solution to shoot lower scores and have more fun doing it...Play from a different, closer set of tees! Jim Cowan, Director of Course Rating & Handicap for the Northern California Golf Assoc (NCGA) joins us to discuss what Rating/Slope means, what total yardage means in relation to Rating/Slope, comparing courses and and how to combine that information with total course yardage, “women’s tees”, the potential of a World Handicap System, and more.

Keep Perspective. Be Humble. Make Birdies! with Jim Venetos

593: Jim Venetos returns to discuss why we should stop watching the Tour Pros or listening to TV announcers telling us why we should swing like the best in the world. We don’t get to practice like them, so why should we emulate something we can’t repeat. If you just focus your practice with bump’n’run shots, pitching and making 3 foot putts, you’ll get much better, much faster. As in the title, just keep your perspective on who you are, and don’t have unreal expectations, you’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll play.

A More Consistent Golf Swing is Simple! Focus on the Club, NOT Your Body with Ed LeBeau

592: Want to play golf more consistently? Stop thinking about all the moving parts of your body and focus on the CLUB!  Ed LeBeau of the Heartland Golf Schools was a disciple of Manuel de la Torre (featured on episode 564 which was a replay of #187 in honor of his passing) who learned from his father Angel de la Torre, who worked with Ernest Jones. These names may not mean a lot to you, but if you want to be a more consistent golfer, then you should learn about these teachings on focusing on the three simple points we discuss that will free your mind and lower your scores.

Want to Play College Golf? Get the Inside Scoop on How to be a Student Athlete

591: If playing golf in college is a goal for you, or someone you know, then you want to hear this conversation with Nick Tannahill, the Golf Head Recruiting Coach for NCSASports.org. Whether you're just looking for free recruiting advice or are seriously interested in how to get college scholarships, they make sure you get expert advice, completely personalized to you, to help you get recruited. Nick and other scouts at NCSA Sports often hear the question, "Do I really need a recruiting profile? If I'm good enough, won't coaches come to scout me?" No one, no matter how much of a star player, can rely on serendipity in the scouting process. Because of college recruiting regulations, time constraints, and their athletic department's budget, college coaches don't have the resources to travel the country to see recruits.

586: Phil Mickleson's Coach, Dave Pelz, says "If You Practice What You're Terrible At, You'll Get a Lot Better, Quicker!"

586 Dave Pelz could be the most sought after and successful short game golf coach on the planet. But he’s so much more! Dave’s a scientist, researcher, author, entrepreneur, club designer, short game guru, and a dedicated family man. In our conversation that goes longer than an hour, Dave gives us a glimpse into his personal history that starts with being a frustrated college golfer at Indiana University who was repeatedly beat by Jack Nicklaus. He then moved on to NASA working as a scientist/researcher/data analyst for the Goddard Space Center. But his love of golf never left his blood, so he took a year off to start a business that ended as a total disaster.  He provides a lot more about his history, and of course provides some short game and practice advice. He also shares his prediction for this year’s Masters. Keep your eyes/ears open for his newest Kickstarter book/video project on Green Reading. The crowdsource funding program will run for 60 days starting May 8, 2016. Help support the project and get your package earlier and for less than the regular public.
