Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 7, “Once More, With Feeling” and Angel season 3, episode 7, “Offspring.” Superfans: Caitlin Newbies: Ariana, Mitch, and Kristen Fun Facts: Mitch wants to warn everyone not to watch Fear the Walking Dead because it’s completely unrealistic. Kristen shares that “Once More With Feeling” put her in a musical mood so she and Karen watched Chicago immediately afterward. Ariana recommends Andy Mack on Disney Channel for all kinds of reasons, including a storyline with a young boy discovering his sexuality. Caitlin binged Wynonna Earp this week. It’s a supernatural western about the great, great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 7, “Once More, With Feeling”: -Synopsis -Joss was inspired by a Shakespeare reading at this house when everyone gathered around the piano. -The cast thought Joss was going to end their careers with this musical episode. They. Were. Terrified. -Ariana gives us her “real” fun fact. -The opening credits are shorter than usual and absolutely delightful. -The villain’s name is Sweet, which isn’t actually said in the episode. -“Going Through the Motions” was inspired by “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. -Sarah Michele Gellar didn’t really want to sing, but when she learned how emotional the episode was, she relented. -Jewel was initially planned to do Sarah’s singing. -“If We’re Together” is the first group number, which lets everyone sing a little, and gets us used to the format. -“The Mustard” gave Kristen major “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit” vibes, and featured writer/producer David Fury. -“Under Your Spell” was the hardest song for Joss to get through the network. It seems romantic, but it’s uncomfortable because of what Willow did the night before. -“I’ll Never Tell” has Anya and Xander laying out all their worries about their impending marriage. -They immediately run to Giles to get this musical thing to stop. -The woman getting a parking ticket is Executive Producer Marti Noxon. -Spike’s song, “Rest In Peace,” is basically what we think Buffy needed to hear from Spike. -Mitch is not a fan, but Ariana is totally here for this. -Dawn makes Tara aware of the fight/Willow’s spell. -Dawn gets kidnapped, so we only get two lines of “Dawn’s Lament.” -We have a chat about Dawn’s kleptomania. -Michelle Trachtenberg requested an extended dance number in place of extensive singing. -“What You Feel” introduces us to Sweet and starts us figuring out what is going on with this MotW. -Sweet reminds Mitch of Him from The Powerpuff Girls. -Sweet’s minions were waaaay creepier than Sweet himself. -Giles’ singing was wonderful in “Standing” (even if we got distracted by the stunt double and the green screen). -“Under Your Spell”/”Standing” Reprise gives us the answer to Tara’s question about the sprig she found under her pillow. She’s hurt and pissed. -“Walk Through the Fire” is Caitlin’s favorite, especially when Buffy kicks in the door. -“Something to Sing About” gives us the big reveal of the episode. We were all really affected by Buffy’s admission that she was in heaven. -“What You Feel” Reprise features Xander admitting that he summoned Sweet. -Sweet peaces out when he realizes it’s Xander that summoned him and he has no interest in taking him for a husband. -Spike leaves during “Where Do We Go From Here” and Buffy follows, which leads to the coda, and… -Buffy and Spike kiss!! -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Angel season 3, episode 7, “Offspring”: -Synopsis -Pregnancy plot lines have a purpose! -Darla and Angel make a HUGE mistake in the flashback. -There’s definitely some flirting going on here. More of a not-fun fact. Kristen had a night of nine-year-old fun with her niece last night and it was just what she needed. Ariana was a bridesmaid in her friend’s wedding and had a ton of fun. Maj has two fun facts: She got to pick her own bridesmaid’s dress last year from Asus and she just saw Wonder Woman. Angel season 3, episode 5, “Fredless”: -Synopsis -The gang theorizes about what happened between Buffy and Angel during their little rendezvous midway between Sunnydale and L.A. -Why do we think the show didn’t show or tell us what happened between Buffy and Angel? –Angel the show is tired of being Buffy‘s little brother. -Yet another conversation about Angel and his “moments of perfect bliss” (AKA his sex life). -We take a poll: Did we all think Fred’s parents were evil? -Fred the Texan physicist. -Lorne gets a whole storyline, so he seems to be more of a fully fleshed-out character. -Lorne advised Fred to keep running, that she “hadn’t run far enough.” Sad Lorne is sad. -Fred was pretty happily in denial about her Pylea life, but is forced to confront it by her non-evil parents. -Mom runs a bug over with a bus! -Fred leaves. What do they want? -First Spell: Time fast-forwarding device? What? Disorienting, just like Willow’s classes. -Second Spell: Jonathan summons demons for Buffy to fight at the construction site. -Third Spell: A time loop while she works at the Magic Box. -Fourth Spell: Red Demon thing? Drunk Buffy still beats him up. -We all agree that the first spell is the worst and freakiest, but the time loop was frustrating and stressful. -Buffy and Spike hangout time. -We all weigh in on our Spike/Buffy feels. -What do we think Buffy feels/thinks about hanging out with Spike? -Why does she choose to hang with him? -Buffy solidly hands Giles his parental unit card when she compares him to her mother. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Listener Feedback: -There is no Ariana hate. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 3, "After Life": -Synopsis -We are all pleased to see Dawn guiding Buffy through life and protecting her from the loud, raucous Scooby gang. -The camera work in that moment evoked just the right feelings. -That Buffy/Spike bonding moment over the pain of clawing her way out of her grave is touching and special. -Also, he knew she wasn't the Buffybot! *swoon* -Spike is pissed and he lets Xander know it. -Xander didn't think through all the reasons Willow kept Spike in the dark, but Spike did in the mere moments he's known. -A little full circle moment from Spike helping Dawn with her resurrection spell for Joyce and wanting to keep it a secret, and now he's the one who's been left out. -Spike feels a part of the team now, and they purposefully didn't tell him. He's hurt. -Is this demon the consequence Spike was talking about, or are there greater magical consequences on the horizon? -When Buffy saw the pictures change: Demon or resurrection side effect? -MOTW: Thaumogenesis demon (not a hell dimension hitchhiker) -This side effect demon is another sign of just how unnatural this spell was. -The demon is not just punishing Willow & Co., but is berating Willow for the evils she committed just to get the ingredients for the spell. -Buffy wasn't in hell, like they all think she was. -She chooses to share her knowledge of a heaven-like afterlife with Spike, but keeps it from everyone else. -Her friends are the ones who ended that peace. -This explains why Willow & Co. chose to leave Giles out of things.
