On the show this time, itâs the soothing acoustic jams of J Mascis.
Just kidding! J Mascis has fun playing some acoustic shows, though of course he is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, super loud through a couple of Marshall stacks and a fuzz pedal or 2. His familiar well-worn tenor has only gained strength over the years since we first heard him with Dinosaur Jr.
In this session he grabbed a 12-string acoustic and delivered an intimate soul-comforting set. His latest solo record, recorded at home, is called 'What Do We Do Now' and it is available on Sub Pop records.
Recorded 01/15/2024.

Hooveriii is the solo project, now writ large, of singer / guitarist Bert Hoover. Specifically, Robert Hoover the third. The project started out in a garage in El Segundo, CA with Bert playing all the parts - bass, guitar, Casio, and drum machine into his classic 4-track Tascam 414. You can listen to that original album on vinyl coming out for Record Store Day - thatâs April 20th, 2024. Over time he has assembled a stellar group of like-minded musicians. They are all capable of hitting their mark, tight and neat. They are also capable of some superb veering off into space jams. Itâs psych-rock, influenced by krautrock, and it aims to take you away from this harsh world for a while - to a better place. The latest record is called 'Pointe' and it is available through the Reverberation Appreciation Society / Levitation.

On the show this time, itâs the brilliant intensity of the veteran New York City band - Blonde Redhead.
Blonde Redhead is a legendary independent alternative-rock band. Theyâve been making music, and records on their own terms since 1994. The consistent core of the band is Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. Between them they cover vocals, keys, guitars and drums. They sometimes work with collaborators - most often occupying the position of bass player. Their band has truly gone through fire - surviving breakups, endless fights, a horrible trampling by horse, and even the goodbye album. This moment finds them returning - 30 years wiser since their debut - with a brilliant, complex record, as fresh and original as any fan could wish for. It's called 'Sit Down For Dinner' and itâs available on Section1 Records.

On the show this time, itâs the Rock n Roll Revival of the Hives.
The Hives have been rocking fans across the world since the 90âs, when they released their first demo, âSounds Like Sushi.â Their over-the-top energy and memorable hooks were apparent from the start â as was their wacky sense of humor â need a punk ode to constipation? Yeah you got it. They dress up fancy in black and white suits. They play fast loud punk rock music. Their live shows are legendary. And ever since they put out the anthem âHate To Say I Told You Soâ on their 2nd full length, 'Veni Vidi Vicious,' they did in fact take over the world. Their latest is called 'The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons' and it is available on their own imprint, Disques Hives.

On the show this time is inspiration from the music of Yemen, played with the homemade instruments of El Khat.
El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug â Khat â a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and youâd better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khatâs music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology. This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

On the show this time, itâs the compelling âcollage-rockâ of Montrealâs TEKE::TEKE.
TEKE::TEKE is a rock band from Montreal, with the twist being that they play in the style of 1960âs and 70âs Japanese movie soundtracks. It is a big band - 7 musicians - and their diverse backgrounds help to drive their eclectic modern take on the psychedelic rock they use for inspiration. The name TEKE::TEKE refers to the classic sound of surf guitar, and originally, they formed to honor Japanese surf legend Takeshi Terauchi. Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the worldâs most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. Itâs loud, it's colorful and itâs super fun. Their latest is called 'Hagata' and it is available on Kill Rock Stars.

On the show this time, itâs the avant-garde sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Anoushka Shankar is a master musician, as well as being a composer and producer. She studied with her famous father - Ravi Shankar - who had a smaller instrument made for his 7 year old daughter. She made her professional debut at thirteen, and over the years she has reinvented sitar music, playing with musicians from various genres, cultures and geographies, looking for new situations and contexts to use its inimitable voice. As she puts it, she âde-exotifiedâ the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Featuring production and collaboration from Arooj Aftab and Nils Frahm. It is available through Leiter, and on streaming services.

On the show this time, dance your butt right off with London producers Jungle.
British dance-music producer-musicians Jungle have figured out the recipe. Theyâve been making hook-laden rump-shakers since before their oddly titled full length debut - 'Jungle.' Technically theyâve been doing it since forever - theyâve been friends since they were little kids. Massive grooves like âBusy Earnin',â âCasio,â and âKeep Movingâ set the standard. Theyâve got placements in TV, film, and video games, so youâve probably heard Jungle even if you didnât know it. Also, their videos have some of the best dancing youâll ever see, thanks in part to the ongoing collaboration with the KZ Creatives collective. Their latest record 'Volcano' is available on Caiola Records.
