TAGP 56: A Personal Rant For All The Warriors & Victims  

"All Television Is Educational, The Question Is What Is It Teaching?"

During my 6 year struggle with debilitating generalized anxiety I ran into a quote that inspired me to see the world in a new light. Although long, I feel the need to share it with you and it goes like this:

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows, it's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently... IF YOU LET IT."

I believe it was Sylvestor Stallone (comment below if I got it right), that said this. The part that stuck with me wasn't the part that the world being a nasty place etc (because I was living it daily at the time due to my health anxiety, panic attacks, you name it), it was the last 4 words:

"If You Let It"

I thought to myself, do you mean I have a choice in the matter? I didn't have to live in a world of reaction to every symptom of anxiety, every criticism my boss sent my way and every moment someone cut me off on the road? That last line gave me some space. Some space between my anxiety and who I was as a person.

I recognized that my internal chatter was enough to keep my mind occupied on how scary the world was. With every identity statement such as "I am anxiety," the fears grew stronger and the more it consumed me like a blanket wherever I went. I shared my struggles with everyone I met, not realizing one important thing along the journey which was that:
"No One Really Cared That I Had Anxiety!"
So I labelled those people too. "Good for nothing people who just care about themselves", and on the cycle went. Today's rant on the anxiety guy podcast comes from a place of love, even though it may not seem like that, so buckle your seatbelts and enjoy the ride.

If there were 10 rules I could give someone to become all they were meant to be in this life, it would be these ones. Life is simple, but we make it complicated. In NLP we label these 10 principles as presuppositions. Understand them and how they may be different than your own current perceptions. TAGP 51: 5 Keys To Better Mental Health  

"Never Let The Opinions Of Others Become The Measure Of Your Self Worth."

How many repetitions did you do for your mind today? Meaning, when you embark on a journey of change, your mind will resist the change greatly. This is simply because your subconscious mind has seen what is familiar for so long, and has no real success with this new approach you will take. But, the more repetitions you put in (execution of the new skill you have) the faster change will happen.
Let's Not Forget That Better Mental Health Means A Firm Commitment To Change
If someone wanted to lose weight, they couldn't do it in a day. If someone wanted to start a new career, that knowledge would take months or even years to master. If you want to have better mental health, you must understand that this is a long term process. I've seen rapid changes in people who first make that firm decision that their patterns of thought that lead to their beliefs MUST change.

Take Note Of That Word; MUST. Not Should, Not Might, But Must Change

As challenging as life might be for you right now you can move past this chapter in your life. You can because you have the resources within you to have better mental health. I lived 6 debilitating years with health anxiety and panic attacks. I grew up seeing my father overreact to the smallest daily challenges. I also saw my father become a physically and verbally abusive person to my mother and me. Lessons learned. I now know how not to be with my own son. But in my mid 20's I felt I was doomed as well.

Incredible how one limiting belief can keep someone in a state of fear and anxiousness forever sometimes

TAGP 49: What Is Increasing Your Anxiety Levels (Without You Knowing It)  

"A clear conscience is the greatest piece of armor."

By arming yourself with awareness, you beat the system. A system that is designed to control your thoughts, beliefs and behaviors. I'm simply not OK with you acting outside your true identity. That is why The Anxiety Guy Podcast exists. This confusion leads us to believe what we think about, and do is important to us.

We must recognize the external factors that feed our high anxiety levels. These factors are not in our immediate awareness, but can be in time. Practicing mindfulness and recognizing what may be growing our anxiety levels is extremely important towards living a peaceful, productive life.
Most of what we do is unconscious which adds to our high anxiety levels. Marketers and advertisers know this, and use it to sell us stuff we don't really need. 
We don't recognize the true power of the habits we do on a daily basis. A funny TV show that we love and enjoy can quickly turn our intentions against us. We than start to act in fear to the outside world, and have goals based around materialistic things. We then wonder what the meaning of life really is.

Life doesn't have to be a grueling fearful ride. Life should be an incredible adventure full of great memories. I know you deserve this, now it's time you found the truth through this powerful episode.

"Fear Of Death Is Worse Than Death Itself."

Get ready for the health anxiety help you truly need. Life wasn't meant to be lived in a constant state of fear at every corner. That is why in this weeks anxiety guy podcast episode we look into the idea of starving your fears.

Questioning your beliefs and your immediate world around you was a concept a good friend, and I needed to hear it. Many of the beliefs and values we hold onto for dear life tends to be the very things that hold us back, and add more fear to our states. I began to question my friends, where my time was being spent, what tv shows I was watching, the advice I was getting, everything.

This will be a powerful episode for the health anxiety help you need only if you are willing to learn, apply, and change

That willingness is where it all starts. I needed to understand that very simply until I improved my internal processes, nothing improved. It's these sayings, sometimes the most basic ones that we refuse to accept. We look for a big and hard solution that is always just outside our grasp instead of mastering the basic principles that will would become the exact health anxiety help we need.
"I can only wish I had someone tell me these things during the beginning of my journey, when I needed the health anxiety help"
Towards the end of my desensitization journey from my fears I began asking myself the same question over and over again; 'does this belief serve me?' If it didn't in that very moment, I caught it, recognized there was no evidence to support it, and replaced it with a new empowering belief.

TAGP 21: The 6 Stages Of Transformational Change  

It's incredibly important that people listening to The Anxiety Guy Podcast episode #2 understand that behaviour change does not happen in one step. Rather, people tend to progress through different stages on their way to successful change. Also, each of us progresses through the stages at our own rate.

So expecting behaviour change by simply telling someone, for example, who is still in the "pre-contemplation" stage that he or she must go to a certain number of AA meetings in a certain time period is rather naive (and perhaps counterproductive) because they are not ready to change.

Each person must decide for him or herself when a stage is completed and when it is time to move on to the next stage. Moreover, this decision must come from the inside - stable, long-term change cannot be externally imposed.

In each of the stages, a person has to grapple with a different set of issues and tasks that relate to changing behaviour.

TAGP 20: How Bali Helped Release Me From Health Anxiety  

In episode #20 of The Anxiety Guy Podcast I want to share the absolute crazy move myself and Robyn took to Bali. Having been given a decent tennis coaching opportunity in Bali, we were faced with 3 tough challenges:

How would we take care of our 1 and a half year old baby in Bali?
How would we get along with the locals?
How the heck would I deal with my health anxiety, knowing there were no hospitals and emergency  calls possible?!?!

The third one was one that made me really anxious. Reason being I was the Hypochondriac that called the emergency guys to come save me from an impending disaster due to my panic attacks, almost on a weekly basis. It wasn't cheap. And it kept me in my comfort zone permanently.

I could have either feared the trip to Bali greatly. Or I could look at it as the first time I could face my fears. If anxiety and panic attacks did show up, I needed to look within myself to learn how to deal with it. I needed to learn to stop running from my fears, and learn how to overcome my health anxiety once and for all.
