Travel Today - Fairmont Monte-Carlo

This week’s radio show comes from the Fairmont Monte-Carlo in Monaco, which may be the second smallest country in the world, but it is a highly visited one. Monaco sees nearly 300,000 visitors each year, who enjoy the warm weather of the French Riviera, the rich history…and yes, the Monte-Carlo Casino. Joining Peter Greenberg at the Fairmont Monte-Carlo for this year’s International Luxury Travel Market is Vanity Fair‘s Travel Editor, Victoria Mather. She explains how shared services like Uber and Airbnb have given more luxury experience access to the middle class. Then, National Geographic’s own Urban Insider, Annie Fitzsimmons, shares why Berlin is one of the hottest cities in the world and where else you should be traveling in 2015. Nathan Lump, Editor of Travel + Leisure, helps us redefine luxury and why it is now all about experiential one-ups-manship. All of this and more when Peter Greenberg broadcasts from the International Luxury Travel Market and the Fairmont Monte-Carlo.

LM101-043: How to Learn a Monte Carlo Markov Chain to Solve Constraint Satisfaction Problems (Rerun of Episode 22)

Welcome to the 43rd Episode of Learning Machines 101!
We are currently presenting a subsequence of episodes covering the events of the recent Neural Information Processing Systems Conference. However, this week
will digress with a rerun of Episode 22 which nicely complements our previous discussion of the Monte Carlo Markov Chain Algorithm Tutorial. Specifically, today we
discuss the problem of approaches for learning or equivalently parameter estimation in Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithms. The topics covered in this episode include: What is the pseudolikelihood method and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
What is Monte Carlo Expectation Maximization? And...as a bonus prize...a mathematical theory of "dreaming"!!! The current plan is to return
to coverage of the Neural Information Processing Systems Conference in 2 weeks on January 25!! Check out: www.learningmachines101.com for more details!

Monte Carlo - Nadal Is Back!

After a three-year absence, Rafael Nadal is back in the winner's circle in Monte Carlo, making it title No.9 in the process.

After a week spent sunning herself in the principality, Catherine Whitaker describes the scenes she saw from courtside, and provides interview clips from Nadal, Monfils, Federer, Murray, and the conqueror of Novak Djokovic - Jiri Vesely.

Talking with David Law, who was not in Monte Carlo, the pair discuss the significance of Nadal's win and Djokovic's defeat, review a stunning Fed Cup weekend, and play #WhatWasThePointInWinning in tribute to Vesely.

The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with Telegraph Sport.

Monte Carlo - Federer looked at me and said 'How come I lose all the close matches?'

One of the longest-running and most glamorous tennis tournaments on the calendar is about to get underway in Monte Carlo. Catherine Whitaker is there, as are the best male players in the world. David Law isn’t (and boy is he letting everyone know about it…).

That hasn’t stopped them getting together for a Tennis Podcast, nor has it prevented David from telling a story about how he once shared an elevator with Federer, moments after the great man, then only a teenager, had lost 7-5 in the third. ‘Why do I always lose the close matches?’ Federer asked. Find out what David said in response.

Other Monte Carlo memories are discussed, the upcoming week is previewed, and we hear from Federer ahead of his return from surgery. Novak Djokovic also talks about his quest for that elusive first French Open, and Rafael Nadal explains how he thinks there is very little pressure when you keep on winning.

We also hear your tennis ‘bucket lists’, and whether you prefer red, blue or green clay.

The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with Telegraph Sport.

Monte Carlo For Physicists

This is another physics-centered podcast, about an ML-backed particle identification tool that we use to figure out what kind of particle caused a particular blob in the detector. But in this case, as in many cases, it looks hard at the outset to use ML because we don't have labeled training data. Monte Carlo to the rescue! Monte Carlo (MC) is fake data that we generate for ourselves, usually following certain sets of rules (often a Markov chain; in physics we generate MC according to the laws of physics as we understand them) and since you generated the event, you "know" what the correct label is. Of course, it's a lot of work to validate your MC, but the payoff is that then you can use Machine Learning where you never could before.

[Unedited] Carlo Rovelli with Krista Tippett

Carlo Rovelli offers vast, complex ideas beyond most of our imagining — "quanta," "grains of space," "time and the heat of black holes" — and condenses them into spare, beautiful words that render them newly explicable and moving. He is the scientist behind the global bestseller "Seven Brief Lessons on Physics," and for him, all of reality is interaction — an everyday truth as scientific as it is philosophical and political. This physicist’s way of seeing the world helps make sense of what he calls "the huge wave of happenings" that is the human self. This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode "Carlo Rovelli — All Reality Is Interaction." Find more at onbeing.org.

36º Podcast Mises Brasil - Carlo Rocha
