Writing and Social: Why the Written Word Is Your Marketing Advantage

Do you write content for your business? Are you looking to improve the quality of your writing and your storytelling skills? To explore why the written word matters in social media, I interview Ann Handley for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast. More About This Show The Social Media Marketing podcast is a show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting). In this episode, I interview Ann Handley, the co-author of Content Rules and chief content officer at MarketingProfs—providing training and education to empower both large and small business marketers. Her newest book is called Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content. Ann shares why she decided to write a book for marketers about writing. You'll discover how to improve your writing for social media. Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below! Listen Now You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show: Writing and Social What led Ann to write this book Ann explains that she wrote Everybody Writes because she looked for that book, and it didn't exist. She wanted a book that was part writing guide geared toward marketers, part handbook on good sportsmanship in content marketing and part reliable desk companion for people creating content on behalf of brands and companies. So she wrote it! Ann wrote her first book, Content Rules, four years ago with C.C. Chapman. That was the beginning of the conversation about content marketing. These days, she explains, being able to write well is a necessity. Everybody Writes came out of Ann’s love for good writing and her desire to see marketers do a better job with their content. Listen to the show to learn more about Ann's first book, Content Rules. Why the written word is so important to marketers Ann explains that since we're all publishers in this age of technology, our words become our ambassadors. Our writing conveys a lot of things about us. It can make us seem warm, fun, competent and trustworthy. But it can also make us seem boring, humdrum and confused. Choosing the right words to tell our story is really important, especially when you want to connect with your customers. In a world where we all have a platform, whether it's a blog or a website, words matter now more than ever. Listen to the show to hear what people said to Ann when she told them she was writing a book on writing. What non-writers need to know about writing Ann believes we are all writers. If you have a website, work in marketing or post on social media, you're a writer. To learn to craft better content, just develop the necessary writing muscles. Ann talks about a story she tells in the book. As a non-athlete, she could never do a pull-up or a push-up. About a year ago, Ann started working with a personal trainer and then four months ago, she did a push-up. It's just like writing. If you want to get better at writing, or at push-ups, you just need practice. Everyone is capable of becoming a better writer. Listen to the show to learn what keeps people from believing they can write. How to develop writing muscles To get better at writing, you need to make it a priority. One tip Ann emphasizes is to give yourself permission to write badly and then fix what you've written. The main thing with writing content is to start somewhere. Write anything, and then edit it well. Listen to the show to discover what voice-to-text tools you can use to create early drafts of your content. Why stories are important and how to tell good ones All humans like a good story. The way you can tell if your story is good, Ann says, is as soon as you get into telling it,

Tough Girl - Ann Daniels - A record breaking Polar Explorer

Tough Girl Challenges is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. In this episode I interview Ann Daniels a record breaking polar explorer. Described by the Times as “living proof that humans really can reach new peaks”.

In 2002, Ann became the first woman in history to ski to the North and South Poles as part of all women teams. She has sledge-hauled over 4000 miles, completing over 10 polar expeditions and surviving over 400 days on the ice.

During this podcast Ann talks about how she took her first steps to becoming a polar explorer. At thirty years old she’d never done anything like this before. She was going through a tough divorce and she had just given birth to triplets! Ann decided she needed to follow her dreams and she wasn’t going to let anything or anyone stop her.

She applied for a relay expedition to the North Pole in 1997. She was not one of the strongest candidates, with her limited knowledge and experience. But she made up for this with her work ethic and drive. She set her goal and she went for it, she kept on learning and she kept on adapting.

She faced huge challenges in one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet and that’s were she learnt the most about herself and what she could achieve. She built her own self confidence; she overcame monumental physical and mental challenges and became stronger and tougher because of it. She developed a mindset where she would not give up.

On this podcast you can listen to Ann in her own words as she explains in detail how she coped with serious setbacks in the Arctic. How she honed her leadership skills and empowered herself and others along the way.  Ann provides tips and advice and is passionate about what she does.

She also talks about a future challenge that’s going to take place in April 2017. Her eyes were opened to the difficulties that young people face in terms of dealing with mental illnesses and the stigma that surrounds it. It was brought closer to home when her eighteen year old daughter was take ill. Ann will lead an expedition of six young people on a journey to the Arctic that they will never forget and in the process raise £3 million pounds for charity. To learn more about Ann and her challenges please visit her website

This podcast will inspire you, and get you to think about what you’ve always wanted to do? What chances do you need to take to go after your dreams? What’s really stopping you? What excuses are you telling yourself?

Ann will encourage you to believe in yourself and believe in the opportunities that are coming available to you.

Listen to Ann and go for it. Give it a go and see what happens. No matter what, you will learn more about yourself by saying yes, than you ever will by saying no.

141-Abducted by Indians, a Captive of Whites

In 1836, Indians abducted a 9-year-old girl from her home in East Texas. She made a new life among the Comanche, with a husband and three children. Then, after 24 years, the whites abducted her back again. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, caught up in a war between two societies.

We'll also analyze a forger's motives and puzzle over why a crowd won't help a dying woman.

Mathematician Ernst Straus invented a shape in which a ball might bounce forever without finding a hole.

In 1874 a Massachusetts composer set the American constitution to music.

Happy Hour # 116 : Ann Voskamp

My guest for today’s episode is Ann Voskamp. Ann is the wife of a down-to-earth farmer; a book-reading mama to a posse of seven; and the author of the New York Times bestseller One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Arewhich has sold more than one million copies. Her latest book, The Broken Way: A Daring Path into the Abundant Life released in October 2016.  Millions do life with her at her daily photographic online journal, one of the top 10 most widely read Christian websites:

Admittedly, I was a little nervous about chatting with Ann. She has a sophisticated and incredibly intelligent aura about her that intimidated me from afar. But, gracious, I loved talking with her and getting to know her a little bit. In our conversation, Ann shares about the heart behind her newest book, The Broken Way. We chat about the temptation to present a polished life, but how God uses our brokenness to bring healing to our own hearts and perseveres the hearts around us.

We chat about everything from their adoption journey to the refugee crisis to living modern day Esther lives. If you need a hug and a good kick in the pants, this is your episode. I think you'll feel so encouraged by Ann and also a push to use your influence to be a minister the oppressed around you.

BEST OF 2015

Previously on Blues Unlimited - Blues from Ann Arbor, '72 (and '69) (Hour 2)

The Festival at Ann Arbor originally started in 1969 at the University of Michigan, and was held just two weeks before another legendary outdoor concert got its start in upstate New York -- a little gathering of some 500,000 people you might’ve heard about called Woodstock. And while Woodstock has since gone into the history books as one of the greatest rock festivals of all time, in strictly blues terms, the 1969 Ann Arbor festival saw a gathering of talent that has been virtually unmatched to this very day.

Making a small profit and hailed as an artistic success, another festival was scheduled for 1970, but it lost money, due to a competing festival nearby. After going dark in 1971, the festival was revived -- with an expanded line up that included jazz icons like Miles Davis -- and was fortunately recorded by Atlantic Records, with a double LP set being issued the following year. And while a handful of cuts off of that LP were reissued on CD over the years, some of them (such as Otis Rush's blazing performance on "Gambler's Blues") remain maddeningly hard to find.

As for legendary, it's pretty hard to top Magic Sam, live at Ann Arbor, 1969. Most blues fans would probably agree that his set at Ann Arbor is one of the top live blues performances of all time. As for a young blues fan named Amy O'Neal who was in the crowd to witness it all happen (she's known as Amy van Singel these days), Magic Sam live at Ann Arbor was one of the best she's ever heard, before or since.

While the music at the 1972 festival was professionally recorded, in 1969, due to a technical snafu, recordings were made with a handheld cassette tape recorder out in the field. Years later, the tapes of Magic Sam were placed in the hands of Delmark Records, who subsequently released them on the critically acclaimed "Magic Sam Live." Needless to say, it's considered essential blues listening.

So catch the spirit of the times with these heady performances from Ann Arbor, 1972, and Magic Sam's blistering performance from Ann Arbor, 1969 -- that is, just in case you weren't there to catch it the first time around.

Overview of the book-

You have NEVER seen Coulter like this before! Coulter is uncensored, unapologetic, and unflinching in her ruthless mockery of liberals, sissies, morons, hypocrites, and all other species of politician.

Coulter doesn’t stop at the politicians, though. Watch her skewer pundits, salesmen, celebrities, and bureaucrats with ruthlessness and hilarity. No topic is safe! This is Coulter at her most incisive, funny, and brilliant, featuring irreverent and hilarious material her syndicators were too afraid to print!

Ann Coulter is the author of eight New York Times bestsellers. Coulter is the legal correspondent for Human Events and writes a popular syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate. She is a frequent guest on many TV shows, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity on FOX News, The Glen Beck Show, and has been profiled in numerous publications, including the Guardian (UK), the New York Observer, National Journal, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle magazine. She was the April 25, 2005 cover story of Time magazine. In 2001, Coulter was named one of the top 100 Public Intellectuals by federal judge Richard Posner.

"Genetically Engineered Crops - A "Spectacular Failure"? w/ Dr. E. Ann Clark"

On our April 9 episode, Deconstructing Dinner examined the precarious state of the University of Guelph's organic agriculture program. As was learned, the University had chosen to cut the program along with others displaying low enrollment. The program now sits in limbo. The episode explored the key decision makers at the University in an effort  to determine why the lion's share of research funding at the school is directed towards the genetic engineering of lifeforms and the corporate control of seeds instead of towards organic research. As a coordinator of the organic agriculture major, Dr. E. Ann Clark's work within the Department of Plant Agriculture has provided her with an ideal vantage point from which to critically analyze the outcomes of the genetic engineering of the food supply also underway at the university.

On May 10, Deconstructing Dinner recorded Ann speak at an event hosted by the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society. Ann's talk dealt with the topic of genetically engineered food, and she sought to demonstrate the "spectacular failures" of these technologies, which are now pervasive throughout the North American food supply.

Topics Covered:

The May 14, 2009 joint statement from wheat producers supporting commercialization of GM wheat The questionable groups communicating to Canadian wheat farmers The formalization of Dow's NAFTA challenge against the Canadian Government Challenging the genetically engineered promises of "higher yields", "reduced biocide use", "feeding the world", "saving the soil", "farmers would make more money" Misleading promises of Bt Corn Seemingly manipulated research findings on consumer preferernces of GM vs. conventional corn The disinformation communicated by Canada's largest agricultural publication, The Western Producer

Dr. E. Ann Clark, Associate Professor, Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph (Guelph, ON) - Ann received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a Masters of Science in Agronomy both from the University of California at Davis. Ann later went on to earn a Ph.D. in Crop Production and Physiology from Iowa State University. Her specific research interests are in organic and pasture production systems, and in risk assessment in genetically modified crops. She has authored 14 books or book chapters, 25 refereed journal publications, given 51 presentations at conferences and symposia, and 150 extension and technical papers or presentations. She currently teaches or team teaches 7 undergraduate courses, and together with Paul Voroney in Land Resource Science, coordinates the Major in Organic Agriculture at Guelph.
