Segment 2-Generational Swindle: How DC is Screwing over Millennials

Posted by ReasonTV

To watch this interview visit-

https://youtu.be/TzDi-C6QdGM

People "want to frame this as a generational warfare issue, but I think it really isn't," says Jared Meyer of the Manhattan Institute and co-author of Disinherited: How Washington Is Betraying America's Young. "It's Washington versus America's young—not boomers and the Silent Generation."

In Disinherited, Meyer and his co-author Diana Furchtgott-Roth point blame at a wide range of government policies that threaten to leave millennials worse off than Gen Xers and previous generations. When the education system isn't failing kids in K-12, it's charging them exorbitant amounts for college degrees that confer less and less advantage. Fiscal policy, debt, and labor laws are squeezing out opportunities for go-getters and entrepreneurs. And then there's unsustainable old-age entitlements, such as Social Security and Medicare, that take money from the relatively young and poor Americans and give it to older, wealthier people.

"Politicians sold a false bill," Meyer tells Reason's Nick Gillespie. "They said: 'All these programs that you are paying for now, you're going to get the money you paid in later.' But they've made promises where they give benefits now and push the cost off to the future, which means current retirees are getting far more back then what they paid in." Published on Sep 23, 2015

In Signature in the Cell, Dr. Stephen Meyer examines how the digital code embedded in DNA points powerfully to a designing intelligence and helps unravel a mystery that Darwin did not address: how did the very first life begin?  Join us as Dr. Meyer investigates how new scientific discoveries are pointing to intelligent design as the best explanation for the complexity of life and the universe.

1,032 - Different Management Styles

Do you think you have what it takes to be a good manager? Find out in this episode.

Slow dialog: 1:23
Explanations: 3:56
Fast dialog: 18:07

Bianca: Today’s the day. We’re supposed to find out who the new manager is going to be. I hope they’re not making a mistake by hiring internally.

Conrad: I just hope they don’t pick Melissa. She would be a disaster.

Bianca: Why do you say that? I like Melissa.

Conrad: I like her, too, but she can be so autocratic. Give her a little power and it goes to her head. Every decision would be top-down.

Bianca: You might be right, but I think Quentin would be worse. He would be so laissez-faire that it would be like not having a manager at all. He’d delegate everything and then sit back and do nothing.

Conrad: I’ll grant you that. Quentin would be a horrible manager. What about Jemima? She’s popular with nearly everybody in the office.

Bianca: I suppose Jemima would be a bearable option. She likes to collaborate and often consults with other people to get their feedback. But I’m backing a different horse, one that would be the ideal.

Conrad: Who?

Bianca: You.

Conrad: Me? No way. I don’t have a chance in hell. And plus, how do you know I’d be a good manager?

Bianca: You’d be democratic in your decision-making and I’d like that. You wouldn’t rule with an iron fist.

Conrad: That’s what you think. Give me a little power and you can start calling me commandant.

Philipp Meyer & Kevin Murphy Talk Texas Oil & Buffalo Blood

Philipp Meyer and Kevin Murphy discuss adapting Meyer's Pulitzer-nominated novel THE SON into an epic new AMC drama series starring Pierce Brosnan.  They talk about the frontier spirit that led larger than life characters to risk everything, first in the cattle business and then in the Texas oil boom, and how that story fits into the mythology of America.  They talk about the violent racial history of Texas including the oft forgotten chapter known as the "bandit wars," and how popular culture glosses over native Americans' own bloody past.  Plus Philipp Meyer drinks buffalo blood!

The 2 hour series premiere of THE SON airs tonight Saturday, April 8 at 9/8C on AMC.  For more information, visit http://www.amc.com/shows/the-son.  Order Philipp Meyer's novels THE SON and AMERICAN RUST on Amazon.  Visit Philipp Meyer's website at www.philippmeyer.com and follow Kevin Murphy on Twitter at @@kevinmurphyhc

Danny Meyer, CEO of the Union Square Hospitality Group

Danny Meyer was a disruptor before it was cool, and remains one today. From the opening of Union Square Cafe in 1985 through Shake Shack’s IPO in 2014 and beyond, Meyer’s restaurants have shaken up the industry’s norms. New York’s fine dining establishment didn’t really focus on customer service and restaurants generally didn’t offer their staff benefits before Meyer arrived on the scene. Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group continued to push boundaries of American dining by eliminating tipping from the Michelin-starred The Modern in late 2015, with plans to extend it to all 13 of its restaurants over time. And starting in 2017, the firm will offer paid parental leave to its full-time restaurant workers, extending a benefits package rarely seen in the industry that has long-included health insurance, life insurance and a matching 401(k) plan. Meyer’s personal background makes him an unlikely revolutionary but it’s clear he’s become one of the most important American restaurateurs of the past 30 years because of a relentless focus on the dining experience for everyone in the restaurant, from customers to employees to suppliers and everyone in between.
