TLS #127: How to Experience More Positive Emotions Everyday with Brooke Castillo (The Life Coach School)

Life coach and fan favorite, Brooke Castillo of The Life Coach School, is back on The Lively Show! Brooke’s first Lively Show about changing our negative thought patterns remains one of the episodes that people return back to again and again for guidance and inspiration the most (myself included!). And today’s episode? It’s just as powerful (if not even more so) than the first one. In today’s episode, we are discussing how to shift the not-so-peaceful emotions that we experience most frequently in our lives to positive emotions in a practical, step by step process. This episode is perfect for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their emotional life in a tangible and practical way.     [Tweet "“Nothing about this day needs to be perfect." - @BrookeCastillo"] [Tweet "“The world cannot cause our emotions. Our emotions are always caused by what we think." - @BrookeCastillo"] [Tweet "“Your feelings are fueling all of your actions." - @BrookeCastillo"] [Tweet "“Your personality is just a collection of the thoughts you think." - @BrookeCastillo"] [Tweet "“Live a conscious and deliberate life." - @BrookeCastillo"]   IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Brooke tells us that she create her program to help people feel better in their everyday lives. She has figured out the most important skill to learn is how to manage our emotional life. Brooke has discovered that thinking is automatic for most of us. She tells us that once our thoughts start going, they take over and we actually believe those thoughts. Brooke tells us that we can fuel everything we do in life with wonderful, positive emotion instead of negative “fumes.” She discusses the issues that Jess has and she can overcome stress and overwhelm that exists. Brooke mentions by putting new thoughts in our head, we can shift our perspective to get back on track. She points out that you can fuel the action of creating the result you want with the emotion that you think you’ll get when you get there. Brooks tells us about “thought download” and how this mini-meditation puts you in the position of the watcher and how that allows you to take control. She talks about those who are missing living a conscious life due to our automatic “autopilot,” since we don’t think about things enough beforehand. Brook wraps up with an idea that it's all little things we do everyday will make the biggest difference in our lives.   SHOW NOTES   The Life Coach School Podcast with Brooke Castillo TLS #87 with Brooke Castillo StrengthsFinder 2.0 Eckhart Tolle The RobCast Podcast with Rob Bell Tony Robbins on YouTube Oprah Winfrey on YouTube TLS #120 with Alex Ikonn Joyce Meyer TLS #122 with Alisa Vitti     LISTEN TO THE SHOW

TLS All Star Episode #143: How to Change Negative Thought Patterns & Understand The Ego with Brooke Castillo (The Life Coach School Podcast)

Today’s Lively Show All Star is life coach and straight shooter, Brooke Castillo, of The Life Coach School and The Life Coach School Podcast. I have loved getting to know Brooke as a guest and friend since this interview first aired, and I still go back and listen to this episode to get a refresher on the truth and liberation that Brooke delivers in this interview. In particular, I LOVE the part where she shared that every emotion we think we will feel “once X, Y, or Z happens” is actually available to us right now, in this very moment. And the part about thoughts, emotions, and actions has become a powerful aspect of Work + Worth as well. This episode is perfect for anyone looking to understand the concept of “ego” (as I refer to it on the show) and wants to learn a step-by-step process to change negative thought patterns.     [Tweet "“The body you’re in is the body you’re meant to be in. Brooke Shields, Recovering Daughter

Brooke Shields became famous as a sex symbol long before she was actually having sex. At 12, she played a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby. Soon after, she starred in the sexy teen romance Blue Lagoon. And at 15, she became the controversial face of Calvin Klein jeans. But then, in college, Brooke publicly revealed her virginity—which she says turned her into "the most famous virgin in the world." "There was a juxtaposition of those two things," Brooke says. "I was not aware. I was not sexually aware."

Despite the sexual nature of her early roles, Brooke says she felt safe on set, protected within the industry, and very sheltered at home. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her mother managed her career. But from a young age Brooke also singlehandedly dealt with her mom's alcoholism, which only worsened as she got older. "She damaged almost every relationship she had," Brooke says. "She cut almost everybody off. And I was the only thing left." Brooke eventually fired her mom as her manager and separated her finances from her—but not until she was 29.

Brooke married her second husband, Chris Henchy, in 2001. They wanted to start a family, but it was a struggle. After several rounds of IVF, Brooke got pregnant with their first daughter. She was thrilled, but soon after her daughter's birth, Brooke says the "toxic thoughts" started. "I saw my baby hitting the wall. Like, being flung across the room," she says." "I would close my eyes. And these horrible things, these images, would come through my mind."

I talk with Brooke about the treatment that she received for postpartum depression, and whether it made her nervous about having a second child. And we talk about how the death of her mother in 2012 has impacted her career—and how, at 50, she's finally paying attention in financial meetings.

8 Hours Sleep #1

Brooke and Ben have started a new Slow Home Experiment this week, and it's one that plays directly into Ben's strengths - sleep. Specifically, they're looking to get 8 hours of sleep every night throughout June, and are curious to see how that will impact their health, well-being and energy levels.

Ben's always been a big fan of sleep, but Brooke has been getting by on 6-7 hours a night for years, thinking that's been enough.

The first week was pretty straightforward, with both Brooke and Ben getting at least 8 hours sleep a night. Brooke really enjoys waking early though and has found her early morning alone time the thing that's bearing the brunt of the experiment so far.  So the problem might be in the getting to sleep earlier, rather than the finding time for 8 hours a night.

Brooke also talks about not actually feeling tired by 8:30pm (the time she needs to go to bed in order to wake at 5am) and the idea that she needs to do more exercise in order to actually feel tired enough to sleep.

Don't forget, you can play along with Brooke and Ben by tagging your social media posts with #slowhomeexperiment and sharing your experiences. Hit us up on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and let’s get experimenting!

Enjoy!

Today's episode is with the Marketing Director of Give Lively, Brooke Currence. Through her love for travel and interest in societal structures, Brooke became increasingly aware and passionate about changing socioeconomic and gender barriers to equal opportunities and achievement. Brooke made a move to New York City in 2015 from Georgia where she lived for 10 years building her marketing career at reputable Fortune 500 IT Firms. Her passions are women and girl’s empowerment, human rights, learning new cultures, meeting new people, and staying active. 030: Brooke McAlary - Slow Your Home

In a fast passed world of trying to be everything to everyone, my guest today, Brooke McAlary, has one word for you – Slow.

Brooke is the author of the new book “DESTINATION SIMPLE – Everyday Rituals For A Slower Life”, host of the hugely successful and #1 iTunes podcast, The Slow Home Podcast, and co-founder of the independent podcast company, Jack Rabbit FM, that she launched with her husband Ben a couple of years ago. Ben was also a guest on the Live Immediately Podcast way back in episode four. I have linked to his episode in the show notes. It is well worth a listen as Ben touches on his thoughts around the alignment of health, happiness and heart.

Brooke has had a massive influence on my life, as it was the lessons I learnt, from her conversations with her guests, that really helped me to shape my thoughts, start asking questions, and create beautiful change in my life over the past few years.

There is so much in this episode, I don’t know where to start. Brooke and I discuss postnatal depression, suicidal thoughts, being led by ego, comparing ourselves unfairly, the beauty in decluttering and the mental white space it brings, becoming present, and the importance of being comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Brooke also goes into detail and explains two words that have had a simple, yet enormous impact on my life – Rhythm and Tilting.

I love Brooke as she is carving out her own path - One that isn’t always easy, but one where she is paying attention and being present.

This is an episode you’ll want to re-listen to, and when you finish listening, I hope you find pockets of slow in your day.

I hope you enjoy x

043: Enough

What is enough? How is it defined? Why is it defined that way? This is an eye-opening conversation between Brooke and Kelly that proves equally surprising to both of them.

Kelly and Brooke came into this conversation with totally different ideas on the direction it would take - Kelly initially assuming they’d talk about ‘enough’ in terms of money, and Brooke assuming the conversation would centre on ‘enough’ in terms of self.   Never ones to shy away from differing points of view though, this episode sees Kel and Brooke go deep into both ideas of enough-ness, despite the fact that money makes Brooke feel incredibly un-comfortable and brutally aware of the privilege of even having that conversation.   When the conversation turns to enough-ness of self, and how we can learn to embrace it, Brooke realises she’s changed a lot since recording the infamous Inner Mean Girl episode earlier this year!   Head over to http://www.letitbe.fm to learn more about Kelly and Brooke and subscribe to the show!

Screen-Free Bedroom #2

Ben and Brooke are in to the second week of their screen-free bedroom experiment and enjoying it SO MUCH. As Brooke mentioned in last week’s episode there’d been some backsliding in allowing phones in to the bedroom and this past week has been such a great reminder of how much there is to gain when we lose the tech.

Brooke is feeling far more relaxed in the morning, while Ben loves the fact that he’s reading more.

One of the interesting things to note has been “the twitch” that Anthony Ongaro spoke about back in Episode 54 of the poggie. Brooke particularly  has found it amazing to see just how often she goes to reach for her phone and this experiment is making it easier to break the twitch - even outside the bedroom.

This is a really easy experiment to join in, so feel free to play along, and tag your social media posts with #slowhomeexperiment.

Ben and Brooke also talk a little more about the launch of the Jackrabbit.FM app, where you can find it and why they’re so excited about it!

Coping with news and social media overwhelm

It might have been the after effects of a tumultuous, emotional week or possibly the fact that they had to record this episode twice (no word on whose fault that is, Brooke) but this hostful gets a little emotional.

As usual, Brooke and Ben answer some listener questions about various elements of slow living, but considering the events of the past week and the subsequent media frenzy, this hostful comes at a super opportune time as Brooke and Ben talk about the role of social media and news in a slower paced life. They also talk specifically on how to avoid overwhelm when faced with an excess of opinions dressed as news, and the different strategies they each use to keep oversaturation of 'current affairs' to a minimum.

The conversation get quite emotional when answering a question about their personal Whys, as both Brooke and Ben examine the reasons for change and what they each stand to gain by choosing to slow down and simplify.

Thankfully, there are also some less emotional questions regarding books (which Brooke is delighted about!) recovering from a busy or stressful period, and the negatives to slow living.

As always, these questions get the brain juices flowing, and hopefully some of the answers and strategies in today's pogpast will be helpful to you as you continue to slow down and simplify.

Enjoy!

Play #1

A new month rings in a new Slow Home Experiment, and after the fairly heavy workload of last month’s decluttering experiment, in November Brooke and Ben have decided to go for something more playful. In fact, as they explained in last week’s episode, they’re experimenting with daily play! (Or random silliness, playfulness, wonder, non-task-oriented things, call it what you will.)

Unsurprisingly, they’ve both had lots of fun this week, but Ben and Brooke talk about the fact that he is much more naturally playful than she is, and that this week has been more challenging than Brooke expected. They look at why that might be, plus how Brooke is choosing to remind herself to lighten up every day and rediscover her inner child.

One thing they both wanted to make clear is that this experiment is definitely not just for those with kids at home. Everyone has the opportunity to be more playful, and while kids perhaps make it more obvious that play is available at every turn, play can be anything that’s just for fun. There are so many ways we can re-engage that sense of child-like wonder in our days, and Ben and Brooke talk through some of them in today’s poggie.

Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/117 for a full list of play ideas.

This is another experiment that’s open to everyone, and it’s never too late to join in. Feel free to tag your social media posts with #slowhomeexperiment and have a cracker of a week.

Enjoy!

040: Manson’s Law of Avoidance

Kelly has recently finished reading Mark Manson’s new book, The Subtle Art of Not giving a F*** and was struck hard by what he calls Manson’s Law of Avoidance.

So aside from the fact that Kel now wants to discover and name a law of something (Exeter’s Law of Providing Value in Conversation has a nice ring to it?) the law itself really struck a chord.

Manson explains that, “The more something threatens your identity, the more you will avoid doing it.”

“That means that the more something threatens to change how you view yourself, how you believe yourself to be, the more you will procrastinate ever getting around to doing it.”

Given recent episodes where Kelly and Brooke have discussed change and assumptions and the pain involved in shifting our habits, this is an awesome topic to dive deep in to. Not surprisingly, they come at it from very different places.

Kelly from a place of personal improvement and Brooke from a place of fear. What neither of them really expected though was for it to be so uncomfortable, and to delve in to the idea of not being universally liked.

039: On Writing

In today’s episode Brooke and Kel talk all about writing. Specifically, what it is they like about it, what they find difficult and why they continue to write in spite of the fact that it can be difficult.

Brooke is in the middle of writing her first book while Kelly is actually in the process of completing her third book right now, so writing is very much front and centre for both of them. As people who write (albeit less now that they’re podcasting multiple times every week – the irony is strong in this one!) the question is: why? Why do we write? Why is it important to commit our thoughts to the page on a regular basis.

Kelly talks a lot about the impact she wants her words to have on the world, while Brooke finds writing helpful in figuring out exactly what she’s thinking. Brooke also shares that she’s really enjoying the writing process so far – though maybe that’s because her deadline is still a comfortable distance away.

Both Kel and Brooke have other writers they look up to, and both girls share their tips and insights from their respective (unofficial!) writing mentors.

036: Comfort Zones

It's not often Kelly and Brooke get to record their conversations in person, so when they knew they'd be attending the Problogger conference together in early September, it was too good an opportunity to pass by.    Given previous episodes where both Brooke and Kel have shared their discomfort at attending big, busy events, networking, meeting new people and walking in to a room full of strangers, they thought a discussion on comfort zones would be fascinating. Add to that the fact that Kel didn't have the opportunity to prepare ahead of recording, and you have a very timely exploration of comfort/discomfort.    Turns out Kel and Brooke have similar ideas on what happens when they stay inside their comfort zones too long, as well as what happens when we intentionally put ourselves outside them. Kel talks about the idea that 'nothing good ever comes on this side of your comfort zone' and both she and Brooke share some examples of a time where getting comfortable with being uncomfortable has paid off.   Brooke also talks about being more confident to head out of her comfort zone these days, and the need to return to it sometimes in order to recallibrate and learn.   Such a fun and interesting conversation this week and great listening for anyone looking to expand into the unknown or uncomfortable - even just a little.    Head over to http://www.letitbe.fm to learn more about Kelly and Brooke and subscribe to the show!

Random Acts of Kindness #3 - The Slow Home Experiment

More than halfway through this month’s Slow Home Experiment and Brooke is discovering that the impact a random act of kindness can have stretches further than only the receiver, and even beyond the giver, to sometimes impact the people who simply witness it. And while it wasn’t necessarily the intention when they began, her and Ben have realised that putting kindness into the world in this way, on a regular basis, is such a rewarding thing to do.

This week Ben and Brooke talk about the good parts of the experiment, as well as some of the things they’ve been struggling with personally, and Brooke shares a particularly funny internal reaction to her buying coffee for a stranger.

They also walk through some of the kind things they’ve done for others this week, and will be posting some ideas for kindness acts over on Facebook over the coming days. None of them are big, and most don’t cost anything other than time and attention, but the benefits are much more wide-reaching than either Brooke or Ben had expected, and for that they’re grateful.
