43. David Batra

Finding Your Spoken Voice: How to Become Believable

Do you talk on podcasts or in video? Want to be more comfortable in front of the microphone? To discover how to improve your spoken presence, I interview David Lawrence. More About This Show The Social Media Marketing podcast is an on-demand talk radio show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. In this episode I interview David H. Lawrence XVII, an actor and voice talent. You may know him as the evil Puppet Master in the Heroes TV show. David has also done extensive voice work for radio, movies and even as the voice for America Online's customer service. David will explore how to find your spoken voice. You'll discover tips to get comfortable speaking on-camera, as well as some of the more common mistakes people make when speaking. Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below. Listen Now You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher. How to subscribe on iPhone. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show: Finding Your Spoken Voice David's background David grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, listening to both local and nearby stations on a little transistor radio hidden under his pillow. "I just fell in love with the idea that one person can sit in a room and talk to millions of people and make each audience member feel as though he or she was the only one the person was talking to," he recalls. Technology, David's other passion, has also run through everything he has done. David recalls his first time on a commercial radio station at WNCI in Columbus, Ohio. At the very end of "Barracuda" by Heart, he came out with "Landshark, candy gram," which was the big bit on Saturday Night Live at the time. From there he played the radio station jingle and headed into his career. After 12 or 13 years as a disk jockey, David's radio station flipped format, and he moved over to talk radio, where he found his stride. From there he went into syndicated radio: SiriusXM. In 2007 David decided that "radio was great, it had its day and I was done with it." It was time to move to on-camera. He says he likes the phrase, "Leap and the net will appear." David just leapt, although he had been preparing and training. Before he did anything on-camera, he learned how the business worked, as well as who the gatekeepers (but not decision-makers) were. That knowledge was helpful when David first started to audition, he says. David booked Heroes within six months of starting the full-on audition process, which is a lot faster than a lot of actors experience with the process. David explains how his one episode of Heroes turned into many. The first day on the set, his character was supposed to get shot and killed. Toward the end of the day, the director gave David new lines. In this newer version, his character had a chair thrown at him and was sent back to prison. "I was new at this and I said, 'Wait a minute. I rehearsed my death scene all weekend. I'm not going to be able to do that?' They responded, 'Do you want to die? Because we talked to your agent and you're in the next eight episodes.'" In addition to all of the legwork and preparation, David says the book, Secrets of Screen Acting (for which he recently finished voicing the audio book version), was also helpful. David also teaches voiceover courses on and he created the Rehearsal app. Here's how the app came about. David was in his agent's office and was called to audition across town with little time to prepare. His usual process is to record his lines and his partner's lines. He would then put that recording on iTunes, so he could repeat it until he learned his lines. All he had at his agent's office was his iPhone with voice memo, which did not have a repeat function. When David got to the studio, he learned they decided to write out the part.

111: David Vox 30 Days of Silence

Operation Self Reset Episode 111: David Vox 30 Days of Silence
Today Jake is talking again with David Vox of

Jake first talked with David in episode #93 and his story and how began. Now David is back to continue his discussion about his life and his goals.

After working hard for three years, David found himself so exhausted that he needed a chance to get away and relax. He decided to go to a monastery for one month to recharge and figure out where to go from there. David thought he’d find an enlightened teacher who could help him really relax and find clarified truth in his life. Instead, David found a racist, homophobic person who had something bad to say about almost every group of people in the world. So David turned inward, searching for clarity on his own.

To his surprise, David found that clarity he had been looking for. His mind was at complete peace and he was happy and content with his life. He thought it would disappear soon, but that feeling remained and David began to examine it to figure out what it was and where it had come from. David found that when he tried to define himself by what other people wanted him to be he became limited. But when he pushed beyond that he was limitless and could become anything. “Freedom is literally a door that disappears the minute you start searching for it,” David tells us. Only when you let go of all the thoughts in your mind, do you enjoy the moment and find that freedom you’ve been looking for.

Listen in as David continues his story and talks about going beyond limits to the ultimate goal.
Here’s what Jake and David talked about in this episode:

Embracing limitless possibilities
How to separate yourself from the consuming thoughts
The ultimate goal
Story versus goals

OSR 93: Healing For Heros With David Vox

Operation Self Reset Episode 93: Goats and Goals With David Vox
In this episode, Jake is talking with David Vox, founder of, a website made of the top coaches around the world to help you enhance your life.

David grew up in a small village in Norway, with an alcoholic mother who dated a violent man. When he was very young, David was put into foster care, which wasn’t much better than the life he had come from. The family treated him terribly and he had no friends except goats. Even after being taken from that family, he still lived with a lot of fear and anxiety. He eventually moved to a family that was kind to him, but David was still so traumatized by everything that had happened to him before that he acted like a goat by head butting things whenever he got angry.

David could have spent his life blaming his childhood for ruining his life and leading him nowhere as an adult. But instead, David didn’t want to spend his life as a victim and going nowhere. In every place where he could act as a victim and focus on his pain, he realized that there were people in the world who had it worse than he did. He was angry about his childhood and that one family made him drink from the toilet—but then he thought about the people in the world who would love to have any water to drink. Thinking about life this way made David move past his own anger and pain to become appreciative and happy about the life he had.

Growing up, David had to have a psychologist twice in his life. As an adult, he realized how helpful it could be to have a coach to help with personal development and goals. Thinking back about his childhood and how his caring foster family helped him to prepare for changes by easing him into them, he realized that was what people needed: someone to help ease them into changes or encourage them to follow certain paths. David decided to try to offer that through his site by getting coaches to offer their advice and encouragement to viewers.

Listen in as David speaks about what led him to wanting to connect people with coaches that haven’t just read books, but have lived these same situations and have advice on how to move forward. David’s story and could lead you to the transformation you need in your own life.
Here’s what Jake and David talked about in this episode:

Life is all about perspective
Sharing our best coaching strategies with each other
“Strategies for doing”
Putting your trust into everything around you
