OSR 80: Making Connections With Geoff Woods

Operation Self Reset Episode 80: Making Connections With Geoff Woods
In this episode, Jake is talking with Geoff Woods, host of the podcast The Mentee.

Geoff works in medical device sales as his day job and loves his job, but toward the end of 2013, one of his colleagues had a stroke. That event made Geoff ask himself, “What would happen if I had a stroke and could no longer work?” He realized that his family would be in a tough situation if that happened. The next week another event happened that made Geoff again look hard at his life: a company change caused his salary to be suddenly cut by 40%.

Those two things changed Geoff’s outlook on his life. He knew he needed to turn things around and set out on a path that would ensure security for his family. He asked himself who were the five people he spent most of his time with and were those five people in the place that he wanted to be in ten years. Those people are still good friends of his, but he realized that he needed to surround himself with inspiring people that could help him move forward and accelerate his life. That is what led him to create his podcast The Mentee and teach others how to do this in their own lives too.

In today’s episode, Geoff demonstrates how to turn your life onto the path you’re dreaming of. Take advantage of opportunities in every day life to let people know what you’re working on or are interested in doing. As Geoff shows us, you never know when someone can be the first step in getting you in that direction, one degree in the six degrees that separate you from your dream life.

So what do you want to do with your life? Where do you want to be in ten years? How will your family survive if you are no longer able to work? Ask yourself these questions as you listen in to Geoff’s advice on how to get yourself on that path to get yourself out there and get the life and security you want.
Here’s what Jake and Geoff talked about in this episode:

How to find the 5 people you need in your life
Turn friends into the first degree of your six degrees of separation
Use your best judgment in deciding when to talk about your aspirations
Get yourself out there

Episode 019 : Geoff Woods : How to Create Mentor Relationships with the Top in Your Industry

Geoff Woods is the host of The Mentee podcast, and is a medical device salesman by day, and an entrepreneur by night. After hearing the Jim Rohn quote that "you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with" Geoff set out on a mission to surround himself with high level CEOs and entrepreneurs. Fast forward, he is a now being mentored by many of these heavy hitters and he publishes the real conversations he has with his mentors on in his top business podcast The Mentee.  Geoff has been featured in and is considered the authority on building meaningful relationships with high level influencers and mentors. Today we will do something a little different.... Normally every week we strive to bring you a guest with a technical ability in relation to the fields of Lean, Continuous Improvement or Six Sigma.  We talk about their experiences and their backgrounds. You hear their success stories, the failures, which we all have and then we ask for their advice.  So follow me here for a moment, the recipe is we find someone just like you or where you want to be and then provide you some insight into their thoughts or actions and provide you with some ideas to change your paradigm on Lean or Continuous Improvement.  One of the most common things that we hear from guests on the show when it comes to advice is to go get a mentor.  Today we are going to talk about practical advice about finding, approaching, and developing a relationship with potential mentors. That’s where Geoff comes in… First of all, Geoff is a good friend of mine.  We started our podcasts about the same time and we’ve built a friendship as we share what is working for growing our shows and having a helpful impact on our listeners, what we are struggling with, etc.  What I love about Geoff is why I asked him to be a guest on the show.  Geoff is doing something pretty incredible.  He’s upgrading his inner circle.  You’ve heard the quote, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”  Geoff really took that to heart and ran with it, and amazing things have happened for him.  Imagine getting advice from the guy who inspired the movie Jerry McGuire…that happened to Geoff, in fact that gentlemen is one of Geoff’s most trusted advisors now. In this episode we talk about: Why it’s important to have a mentor and more than one mentor. The series of steps to develop relationships with mentors. Why it’s more important to be interested than interesting. How to defeat self limiting beliefs. He reportedly had not thought much of being in the house past it being a part of 'American Folklore', in his words, until he met Tate's sister by chance and she asked him point blank if he was trying to capitalize on her death. 70: The KEY to LOCKING IN A HABIT with Geoff Woods

Geoff Woods is the Vice President of The ONE Thing Team. After hearing the Jim Rohn quote that "you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with" Geoff set out on a mission to surround himself with high level CEOs and successful entrepreneurs. Fast forward just 10 months, Geoff went from employee to entrepreneur, launching a company with the co-authors of the best selling book The ONE Thing. Geoff has been featured in and is on a mission to teaching people how to live a life of focus so they can have more by doing less. S

tarting out in medical device sales, Geoff has found that one of his biggest life transitions happened only about 18 months ago. It just goes to show you that, “it’s never too late!”

Leaving a secure job, especially when the pay is substantial, isn't always easy. But what comes easily, isn't usually what’s “right.” Like many of us, Geoff knew something was off, something was missing from his day to day life.

Unfortunately, yet luckily, two major events really hit Geoff right where he needed it. After witnessing a young colleague of his suffer a stroke and after receiving a 40% pay cut, it was time for him to make some serious life changes.

“You are the average of the 5 people that you spend the most time with.” -Jim Rohn

Surrounding yourself with those who can help you reach your goals is one of the fastest ways to success. After launching his own podcast The Mentee, in January 2015, doors of opportunity began to open, bringing him and his family to Texas to work with Gary Keller and Jay Papasan for “The ONE thing.” Flashing forward to today and the accomplishments he has made for himself, Geoff goes on to tell us about the important art of time blocking!

“Every single day you are either marching towards your goals or stepping further away.”

He teaches us that doing the same one thing a day may not seem significant, but if you stack it up over a period of time, as you know the day will come where you look in the mirror and not even recognize yourself. This could go one of two ways. The reflection you see in the mirror can be someone you've always wanted to be and who you are proud of, or someone you have lost sight of altogether. From this day forward, I am challenging you all to time-blocking. For yourself, your health, your ultimate goals and your dream life.

“In all of our research it shows that it takes 66 days to form a habit.”

Quit biting off more than you can chew. Whether it be your first time ever or not, set a goal, no matter the size and stick to it!

Join the challenge and you can thank me later.

Work Simply by Carson Tate | Episode 167

In this episode Carson Tate takes a deep dive into her book, Work Simply, where she provides a system to help make work less complicated and more organized.

In her book Tate gives you a step-by-step productivity system that is separated into four custom styles that are uniquely fit for different types of learners and doers. The goal of the book is to help you identify your own unique productivity style, maximize your effectiveness, lead great meetings, communicate properly, and tell how your desk defines your work style.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that maintain a very busy schedule, work over 40 hours a week, and need help organizing tasks into an effective system.

About Carson Tate:

“I am the owner and founder of a company called Working Simply and that’s my personal mission as well as my company’s mission to help individuals, teams, and organizations streamline and simplify their workflow.

I am very privileged to have the opportunity to work with really high achieving entrepreneurs and business owners and as I was working with them I was finding that they were struggling in trying to adopt and adapt some of the time management, productivity, best practices in the marketplace. So they were feeling frustrated and overwhelmed because the latest and greatest app or blog post that they read wasn’t working for them. I realized that it wasn’t the lack of drive but rather the tools that they were using weren’t aligned to the way they think. So I wanted to write a book that helped people identify the way they think and then align their thinking styles to the way they actually work so that they can be more productive and more discerning.” – Carson Tate

23: Geoff Woods of The Mentee podcast on finding ideal mentors

Geoff is the host of The Mentee podcast, which documents Geoff’s journey from employee to entrepreneur, and the mentors who are helping to guide him.

In the last 12 months, Geoff has gone from having his income slashed by 40% and being surrounded by the wrong people to being directly advised by CEOs of major corporations.

Geoff’s story struck a particularly strong chord with me based on a interview that I had about a month ago with Bryan Miles, CEO and co-founder of Miles Advisory Group. In that interview Bryan and I discussed at some length the critical role that having the right mentors and advisors in his life played in his decision to start his business.

In this episode I chat with Geoff about the circumstances that led him down the path of entrepreneurship, and he shares his tips on finding  ideal mentors.

Articles of Faith 20: Geoff Biddulph – Why Didn’t The Church Teach Me This Stuff?

Geoff Biddulph is a convert to the Church of just over 15 years. Before joining he read a lot of anti-Mormon literature. However, it was the Spirit that converted him and helped him be open to being baptized. Since then, Geoff has read the book of Mormon more than 10 times and have read the entire Bible at least five times. He has a large library of Church-related material from which he draws upon as he writes for the Millennial Star blog—where he has contributed for nearly a decade. He his wife Cindy were married in the Denver temple nearly 11 years ago and they now have five kids. He is joining us by phone today from Denver, CO. Geoff is here to talk about an article he wrote for the Millennial Star Blog entitled, “Why Didn't the Church Teach Me This Stuff”

During your time as an LDS blogger, how have you seen the “bloggernacle” as it is often referred to, the catalog of blogs who claim some voice in the Mormon Community, how have you seen it change during that time?

While we seek to focus on Articles that come from what would be considered more academic or scholarly, we do find articles from time to time that strike an apologetic tone and regardless of the level of scholarship, the argument presented can help those struggling to reframe their position in such a way that might help calm the stormy waters of a faith crisis. Your article entitled, Why Didn't the Church Teach Me This Stuff, was released on November 12th, 2014. This was a response to a gospel topics essay that the Church released on Polygamy in the early church, specifically during the Kirtland and Nauvoo periods. If you could, for those that haven't read the article, summarize what one might find in that piece, specifically the parts that have caused some stir in public discourse recently.

The Church released its gospel topics essay Around October 22nd. A google search just this morning showed a massive amount of news outlets posting articles just three days ago (from the date of this recording), so on November 11th there seemed to be this bump in interest, which makes me wonder what about this topic seems to be keeping this subject around so long?

Your article is in response to a strain of discourse that centers around some discontent or uneasiness with the Church's release of this gospel topics article. What is that position and why did that strike as something that warranted a response?

You ask the question of the reader but I want to turn it back on you, Why didn't the Church teach me this stuff?

It is a difficult position to respond to because you don't want to demean what someone is feeling, that kind of hurt or shock is sometimes not so easily dismissed. So, how does your article serve to address that dissonance?

This may sound like a loaded question or one that is hard to answer in a short podcast, but if people are feeling that the church hid this from them, it begs the question, what is the role or responsibility the church has towards its members with respect to topics such as this? All the lurid details as you put it in your article?

The article concludes:

The Church did teach you stuff about even controversial topics. Perhaps you were distracted or didn’t pay attention or were not curious enough to explore on your own. You are ultimately responsible for your own learning, and you are responsible for how you respond to new information. That is what that whole “free agency” thing is all about.
