Bill McDermott talks St. Louis group’s soccer stadium public forum, MLS2STL’s progress

A local group working to bring a Major League Soccer team to St. Louis is hosting a town hall public forum Tuesday night to unveil potential plans for a 20,000-seat soccer stadium in the St. Louis Midtown region.

St. Louis soccer guru Bill "Mr. Soccer" McDermott joined The Hollywood Casino Press Box to talk about Foundry St. Louis' Public Engagement Forum, which will be held at Urban Chestnut Brewing in The Grove neighborhood beginning at 7 p.m.

Listen to the interview and read a few excerpts below:

What do you know about Foundry St. Louis?

"They're headed up by Dan Cordes. He used to work at ExpressScripts. They're going to attempt...to have a partnership with SLU to put a stadium at the corner of Grand and Chouteau. They are dramatically different...totally different...than the MLS2STL group."

On the town hall forum at Urban Chestnut in The Grove:

"I think this is a means of showing people what they have been doing. They seem really steadfast in what they're attempting to do."

What progress has been made by MLS2STL, the other group trying to bring an MLS team to St. Louis?

"This group, MLS2STL...they were formed in February. They have a program that's significant. They have an extreme commitment to doing it right...and on a daily basis, they speak with Don Garber, the commissioner of MLS (and other league officials). Their message has become quite simple: be patient, but be ready. Because when this thing hits the ground, it's going to be all hands on deck."

091-The Voyage of the Damned

In 1939, an ocean liner carrying 900 Jewish refugees left Nazi Germany seeking sanctuary in North America, but it was turned away by every nation it appealed to. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the so-called "voyage of the damned" and the plight of its increasingly desperate passengers.

We'll also discuss the employment prospects for hermits in Seattle and puzzle over the contentment of a condemned woman.

015-The The Flannan Isles Mystery

In 1900 three lighthouse keepers vanished from a remote, featureless island in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The lighthouse was in good order and the log showed no sign of trouble, but no trace of the keepers has ever been found. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore the conundrum of the men's disappearance -- a classic mystery of sea lore.

We'll also ponder the whereabouts of Robert Louis Stevenson's birthday, admire Esaw Wood's quest for a wood saw that would saw wood, and wonder why drinking a glass of water might necessitate a call to the auto club.

Here's the deed:

Vailima, June 19, 1891.

I, Robert Louis Stevenson, Advocate of the Scots Bar, author of The Master of Ballantrae and Moral Emblems, stuck civil engineer, sole owner and patentee of the Palace and Plantation known as Vailima in the island of Upolu, Samoa, a British Subject, being in sound mind, and pretty well, I thank you, in body:

In consideration that Miss Annie H. Ide, daughter of H.C. Ide, in the town of Saint Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, in the state of Vermont, United States of America, was born, out of all reason, upon Christmas Day, and is therefore out of all justice denied the consolation and profit of a proper birthday;

And considering that I, the said Robert Louis Stevenson, have attained an age when O, we never mention it, and that I have now no further use for a birthday of any description; ...

And in consideration that I have met H.C. Ide, the father of the said Annie H. Ide, and found him about as white a land commissioner as I require:

Have transferred, and do hereby transfer, to the said Annie H. Ide, all and whole my rights and privileges in the thirteenth day of November, formerly my birthday, now, hereby, and henceforth, the birthday of the said Annie H. Ide, to have, hold, exercise, and enjoy the same in the customary manner, by the sporting of fine raiment, eating of rich meats, and receipt of gifts, compliments, and copies of verse, according to the manner of our ancestors;

And I direct the said Annie H. Ide to add to the said name of Annie H. Ide the name Louisa — at least in private; and I charge her to use my said birthday with moderation and humanity, et tamquam bona filia familia, the said birthday not being so young as it once was, and having carried me in a very satisfactory manner since I can remember;

And in case the said Annie H. Ide shall neglect or contravene either of the above conditions, I hereby revoke the donation and transfer my rights in the said birthday to the President of the United States of America for the time being:

In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June in the year of grace eighteen hundred and ninety-one.

Robert Louis Stevenson.

Witness, Lloyd Osbourne,

Witness, Harold Watts.

To Ide Stevenson wrote, "Herewith please find the Document, which I trust will prove sufficient in law. It seems to me very attractive in its eclecticism; Scots, English, and Roman law phrases are all indifferently introduced, and a quotation from the works of Haynes Bailey can hardly fail to attract the indulgence of the Bench."

A bizarre coincidence: Just before we recorded this episode I discovered that Robert Louis Stevenson's cousin, David Alan Stevenson, designed the Flannan Isles lighthouse! I'd had no inkling of this in planning or writing the episode; the two stories are set literally a world apart.

"The Story of Esaw Wood," by W.E. Southwick, from Carolyn Wells' 1918 anthology Such Nonsense!:

Esaw Wood sawed wood.

Esaw Wood would saw wood!

All the wood Esaw Wood saw Esaw Wood would saw. In other words, all the wood Esaw saw to saw Esaw sought to saw.

Oh, the wood Wood would saw! And oh, the wood-saw with which Wood would saw wood.

But one day Wood’s wood-saw would saw no wood, and thus the wood Wood sawed was not the wood Wood would saw if Wood’s wood-saw would saw wood.

Now, Wood would saw wood with a wood-saw that wo

The Amateur Traveler talks to Rease Kirchner about her hometown of St. Louis Missouri. St. Louis is known for its iconic Arch and is known as the gateway to the west. Rease claims that St. Louis has the largest urban park in the U.S., and now boasts about a surprising array of ethnic restaurants including a Little Italy area with toasted ravioli and a Little Mexico around Cherokee street. The city has an art museum made of entirely recycled materials, and Rease’s favorite the City Museum. Rease also tells us where we can find traditional St. Louis food including gooey butter cake and a slinger which she describes as “everything that can kill you all on one plate”. St. Louis is famous for Budweiser and for the associated Busch stadium which is the home of the St. Louis Cardinals, but now also boasts micro-breweries and NFL and NHL teams.

Episode 794 - Louis Theroux

Filmmaker Louis Theroux once tried to make a documentary featuring Marc but he never used the footage. Marc's been puzzled by that ever since, but when you look at the subjects of many Louis docs - addicts, criminals, hate mongers, pornographers - Marc might be lucky Louis never made that movie. Marc talks with Louis about evolving as a filmmaker, learning from Michael Moore, and what went into Louis's latest film, My Scientology Movie. This episode is sponsored by Squarespace, Fusion's The AV Club, and Casper.

Louis' interview with Jimmy Savile is analysed in depth. Should he have spotted the monster lurking beneath the surface? It's a fascinating 90 minute chat, more serious than usual, but still very funny. Thanks to www.secondlab.co.uk and all the other kickstarters.

116: Louis Smith, Amelle and David Roy Wood

This week's interviews are with: Amelle Berrabah, shown here with her pro partner, sports acro world champion, Doug Fordyce; Louis Smith who gives us the deets on his Euros disappointment; and Amelle's coach David-Roy Wood who talks about what he learned from, no biggie, Nadia.

It's interview-o-rama today on the show! Louis Smith is here to answer your Book Club questions. Amelle Berrabah, the British singer and finalist on BBC One's gymnastics tv show, Tumble, is here with her coach David-Roy Wood (who also coaches Princess Catherine). And by the way, Amelle is going to continue with adult gymnastics when the show is over because she loves the fitness results she's achieved during training! To conclude, Jessica and Emma recap Tumble episode 5 before the big finale on Saturday where NADIA WILL BE PERFORMING!

Louis Smith tells us: If he was every suspicious of his dad's motives when he came back into his life. Exactly why he was so upset about not being named to the GB squad for Europeans and how he thinks it should have been handled. If there is any truth to the Lucy Mecklenberg romance rumors How he concentrated on training with Lisa Mason and Rochelle Douglas in the same gym and advice for asking out a teammate. What he would change about Tumble for next season. Amelle and Dave tell us: What they learned from Nadia's surprise visit to their balance beam training session. About the training schedule and pressures of Tumble. Overcoming fear and doubt when there are millions of people watching.

Token Skeptic #19 - On Skepticism And Education (Interview With JREF's Michael Blanford)

It's Episode 19 - and I'm getting back into the swing of things by releasing the two missing episodes AND the required 'one episode a week'! Can't say how much I appreciate all the listeners, considering how this show has gone in a variety of directions and subjects which (I assure you) wasn't the original intention! Where are we now? We're listening to Michael Blanford, who you may have noticed has recently joined the James Randi Educational Foundation! He's the new Director of Educational Programs! As a high-school teacher myself, I've got a lot of questions and vested interest in knowing how he's going to help with the 'E' in JREF. "With an academic background in zoology, Blanford began his career as a field biologist, studying amphibians and reptiles in the United States and Costa Rica.  While he enjoys doing research, he has spent much of the last 15 years promoting science literacy and appreciation.  He has developed science curricula, programs, and informal content for a number of institutions, including schools, community centers, and museums.  Most recently, he was coordinator for the Saint Louis Science Center’s Life Science Lab, an innovative space with the mission of exposing the public to the tools and methods of scientific research. Michael lives with his family in Saint Louis, Missouri, where he spends much of his spare-time promoting grassroots skepticism through a number of organizations.  Michael is founder of the Saint Louis Skeptics Meetup, founder and President of the Skeptical Society of Saint Louis, co-founder of Saint Louis Skeptics in the Pub, and has served as Vice President of the Rationalist Society of Saint Louis, America’s oldest continuously meeting free thought organization." Head to the www.randi.org site to learn more.   The official site for Token Skeptic is at www.tokenskeptic.org. From October 11, 1940 to December 25, 1948, it was heard on the Blue Network, with various sponsors that included Sloan's Liniment, Waterman pens and Tide. Returning to CBS on January 8, 1949, it ran until June 25, 1955, sponsored by Grape-Nuts and Wrigley's chewing gum. The final series was on the Mutual Broadcasting System from October 5, 1955 to November 27, 1957. It was once narrated by Norman Schwarzkopf, Sr., former head of the New Jersey State Police. THIS EPISODE: October 3, 1953. "The St. Louis Jewel Robbery" - CBS network. Sustaining. Wally and his two friends are planning a jewelry robbery in St. Louis.
