Episode 025: Terry Hake - Operation Greylord, Judicial Corruption (Part 2)

Show Notes:
This is the second half of a two-part episode with former FBI agent Terry Hake. Terry continues his account of working undercover as a crooked defense attorney in the largest public corruption investigation in America. When the investigation—code named Operation Greylord—was initiated, Terry was a young Assistant State's Attorney fed up with corruption in the Cook County, Illinois court system. During the investigation, he was hired by the FBI, first as a project development specialist and then as a special agent. In this episode, he also explains why, after being an employee for only seven years, he resigned from the FBI and instead continued his 23-year career in federal law enforcement at several other non-Bureau agencies.

Terry wore a concealed recording device for three-and-a-half years fully aware that he could have been jeopardizing his reputation and law career in doing so. At the conclusion of the undercover operation, Terry testified in 23 trials over a 10-year period and eighty-three judges, lawyers, court personnel and policeman were convicted for accepting bribes to fix court cases.

Terry's recently released book—Operation Greylord: The True Story of an Untrained Undercover Agent and America’s Biggest Corruption Bust—provides a detailed narrative of his role in the undercover case.

Show Notes:
Former FBI agent Terry Hake officially served seven years with the FBI. However, his service to the Bureau, the Department of Justice, and other federal law enforcement agencies actually spanned more than 23 years. Terry is interviewed about working undercover as a crooked defense attorney in the largest public corruption investigation in America. When the investigation—code named Operation Greylord—was initiated, Terry was a young Assistant State's Attorney fed up with corruption in the Cook County, Illinois court system. Operation Downfall

Operation Downfall was the proposed invasion of mainland Japan by Allied Forces near the end of WWII.  It was canceled because the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered, thereby removing the need for a military conquest.  It would have been the largest amphibious invasion in history, and it would have been the first time that a foreign power had set foot on mainland Japanese soil (in the country's 2500 year history).

Operation Downfall had two parts: Operation Olympic (Nov 1945) and Operation Coronet (March 1946).  Both were commanded by MacArthur and supported by Nimitz.  Operation Olympic involved the I, V, IX, and XI Corps storming the beaches of Kyushu (the southern main island) and taking airbases to support Operation Coronet.  Operation Coronet involved the First Army and the Eighth Army, as well as numerous British Commonwealth units, storming the beaches of Honshu near the capital city of Tokyo.

On the opposing side was Operation Ketsu Go, the Japanese defense of its main islands.  Most of Japan's forces (air and ground) were focused on the island of Kyushu.  Also, tens of millions of Japanese civilians (all able-bodied civilians, men and women) were trained in basic martial arts in order to repel the invasion.  In addition, the Japanese government created numerous suicide units to repel the invasion.

All in all, it would have been one of the bloodiest battles in history.  An estimated 1 million Americans and 10 million Japanese would have lost their lives.

Podcast Transcription

Hi and welcome to another Mansión Inglés podcast from mansioningles.com, recorded for August 2010.

Most of you are probably on holiday now. Sitting on the beach listening to this podcast, watching the palm trees sway (balancearse, mecerse) from side to side in a gentle breeze. Maybe drinking a cold beer or a cool vodka and tonic with ice and lemon. Ahh! - Where ever you are and whatever you’re doing, I hope you’re well and happy, and ready to practise some more English with La Mansión del Inglés.

Hola. OK? Come on! ¿Animo!

Because it’s holiday time, we practised a lot of holiday vocabulary in this month’s Newsletter (cuaderno).

costa – coast – sonido vocal /ow/ coast - repeat: coastnadar - to swim

puerto – port – sonido vocal /aw/ - port - repeat: port

arena - sand

playa – beach vowel sound – sonido vocal – /I:/ repeat: beach. No olvides hacer el sonido vocal largo /i:/ - beach. So repeat with me: /i:/  ‘beach’ – beach. I’m looking for the beach.

piscina - swimming pool

mar - sea

pelota de playa - beach ball

sombrilla - beach umbrella

gafas de sol - sunglasses

toalla - towel – difficult pronunciation. Listen: towel - repeat: towel

crema solar - suncream

Tomar el sol is to sunbathe – repeat: sunbathe. Be careful – ten cuidado – when you’re sunbathing. The sun is very hot. Put suncream on your body. If you don’t you might get sunburned – quemado por el sol. But if you’re careful, you’ll get a nice suntan bonceado, moreno – Repeat: suntan - to get a suntan - oh and it’s a good idea to wear sunglasses – gafas de sol. Take sunglasses to the beach.

Let’s move on to our list of irregular verbs.

To leave Escucha y repite: leave– left - left. What time did you leave? I left at 3:30. I’ve left you some chocolate cake in the fridge. Don’t leave me. Please don’t go!

Next is the verb prestar – to lend repeat lend – lent - lent. Can you lend me your pen? Lend es prestar (you lend something to someone) y borrow es tomar prestado (you borrow something from someone). = "Can you lend your car to me?" ... nunca se dice "Can you borrow your car to me?"...

"Tomé prestado tu coche " = I borrowed your car. So, you borrow money from the bank - The bank lends money to you (er..sometimes!). Repeat: lend – lent – lent. Can you lend me $10? I lent you 10 yesterday!

Easy. No se cambia let – let -let – Let me see! - ¡Déjame ver! Her father lets her smoke – Su padre le déjà fumar.

Encender o iluminar is to light – L-I-G-H-T – light – lit – lit. Did you light the fire? – I lit a cigarette. Come on baby light my fire! – ¡enciende mi fuego!

El verbo perder en inglés is to lose – repeat: lose – lost – lost. The vowel sound is /oo/ lose. I often lose my keys – mis llaves. Valencia usually loses to Barcelona. Chelsea lost against Manchester United. I want to lose weight. To lose weight – perder peso.– I’ve lost 3 kilos. What’s the opposite of lose weight? – put on weight. That’s easy for Spanish speakers to remember ‘put on’ – I’ve put on weight.

To make means hacer repeat: make – made – made. It’s made of wood – Es de madera. - It makes me happy. Me hace feliz. I made a cake yesterday.

El verbo significar is to mean. Repeat – mean – meant - meant Repite el sonido vocal /I:/ mean. What does this mean? ¿Qué significa esto? What do you mean? ¿qué quieres decir (con eso)? A student once asked me “Craig, what does mean mean?” ¿Craig, Qué significa mean?

To meet is conocer o encontrar. Repeat – meet – met – met - "pleased to meet you" or “nice to meet you” - encantado de conocerte. We met the verb meet last month with the verb to know. Do you remember? To know can also mean conocer. La primera vez que coneces a alguien you meet them. “Nice to meet you.” After you meet them, you know them. I met her at a party. Where did you meet your wife? I met her at a wedding. Have you ever met anyone famous?

Pagar in English is to pay. Repeat: pay – paid – paid. Did you pay for the beers? – I paid you last week. Has your boss paid you yet? How much did he pay you?

Finally, the verb poner. In English to put. La forma es la misma. Put – put – put. El vocal /u/ repeat: /u/ put –put –put. Put my coffee on the table. Where did you put your jacket? Have you put the air conditioning on? You've put on weight.

Ready? ¿Listo?

leave                left – left

lend                  lent – lent

let                    let – let

light                  lit – lit

lose                  lost – lost

make                made – made

mean                meant – meant

meet                 met – met

pay                   paid – paid

put                   put - put

We also studied some holiday vocabulary at intermediate level this month. Let’s see what you remember. I’ll say the Spanish words and expressions, and you say the English translation before I do. Then, repeat the vocabulary to practise pronunciation.

el balneario What’s that in English? El balneario. I can’t even say it in Spanish! Help! How do I say this? El balneario — It’s a spa, or resort

bahía - bay – B – A - Y

traje de baño, bañador  - swimsuit or swimming trunks

buceo, bucear - diving, to dive

esnorkel, buceo con tubo de respiración - snorkeling – to go snorkeling

bloque del sol, crema solar, bronceador - sunscreen, sunblock or suntan lotion

vista al mar - sea view

océano - ocean

tomar el sol - to sunbathe

bañista - sunbather

salvavidas - lifeguard

concha marina - sea shell. That’s difficult. Repeat: sea shell – sea shell

nevera - cooler

marea alta - high tide

marea baja - low tide

And now some useful phrases - Frases útiles – say them in English and Repeat them.

¿Dónde está la playa? - Where’s the beach? Listen and repeat: Where’s the beach? – Excuse me, where’s the beach?

¿Hay algún salvavidas? - Is there a lifeguard?

¿Es seguro para niños? - Is it safe for children?

OPERATION HIGHJUMP

Operation Highjump began when marines in full battle gear were sent by the United States to Antarctica on what was officially described as a “training” mission, departing from Norfolk, VA, on 2 December 1946.

The expedition was filmed by the Navy and brought to Hollywood to be made into a commercial film called The Secret Land.   Many individuals questioned why an expedition to Antarctica was put in place so rapidly shortly after World War II, and with so much manpower and military equipment.  Suspicion was raised that it was in the best interest of national security of the United States.

Admiral Richard E. Byrd led Operation Highjump, perhaps in the search for a supply of coal, oil or even uranium, but it was called off much earlier than expected.  Unofficial sources claim that Byrd and his forces encountered heavy resistance to their Antarctic venture from "flying saucers", which necessitated their hasty return home.

It was believed that the Germans had developed a base in Antarctica during, and perhaps even before World War II, and it was well known that the German High Command hung on believing that the new weapons under development would turn the tide of the war back in Germany’s favor. With ever increasing Allied bombing and armies closing in on Germany from the east, west and south it would seem prudent to move one’s most precious projects to somewhere beyond reach, and what could be further from the Allies’ grasp than Antarctica?

At this point, one must ask why, exactly, the United States, and, in fact, her allies, suspected that German activity at the pole was continuing, after the conclusion of the Second World War. The answer has nothing at all to do with Unidentified Flying Objects.  That part of the story came to light from a completely different set of sources.  The fact is that there was plenty of evidence, at the time, to indicate that as late as 1947, elements of the Kriegsmarine, or German Navy, were still very much active in the South Atlantic, operating either out of South America, or some base, previously unsuspected, in the Antarctic.

[spoiler]You’re listening to Operation Self Reset with Jake Nawrocki. Now it’s time to reset your life. Hit it!

Hello and welcome to Operation Self Reset. My name’s Jake Nawrocki, and this is episode number one, the first of many episodes to come down the pipe from OperationSelfREset.com. I thank you again for joining me. This is going to be an awesome, awesome podcast. I hope you get a lot of information, knowledge, and fun facts to share with your family at Christmastime, because there’s nothing better than a fun fact, right?

So let’s dive into this. We’re going to be doing things a little bit differently today because this is episode number one, and you want to get to know me, Jake Nawrocki. Who am I? I know. It’s going to be a very deep, interesting conversation. I have a lot to share with you. But also we’re going to talk about what Operation Self Reset is and what it means to me and what it means to you. Obviously, the reason you’re listening to this podcast is not only to hear my amazing voice—I know I’m talented, thank you—but to get information that can change the way you think, act, and believe. And it’s basically on the mindset of resetting things that have gone okay in your life. You know, some things have gone well; some things have gone badly, and we want to change the bad into the good so we can have our lives just be great full time.

And that’s what life is all about because every single minute we spend on this life, excuse me, on this earth is very, very precious. There are only so many ticks in your chest, a.k.a. your heart, that, and the craziest thing is with all the technology, with all the iPhone apps and all that crazy stuff there is no way to determine when that ticker is going to run out. So we really need to make the most out of this life. Because, gosh, it is amazing, isn’t it? There have to be times in your life when you wake up, you, you go on a trip, you meet with new friends or old friends or whatever, your experiences that sometimes you just go, “Wow! That was a great time. Wow! That was amazing. Wow! That scenery was beautiful.” You know there are times like that, just little slivers that make us go, “Wow, I really appreciate life.” And that’s what everything is all about literally. In the end, that’s what life is all about.

So before I start talking about how I came up with the idea of Operation Self Reset,

107: Hans and Katie Bishop of PrairiErth Farm on Connecting with Customers and Bringing a Spouse into the Farming Operation

Hans and Katie Bishop raise fifteen acres of certified organic vegetables at PrairiErth Farm in central Illinois, marketing about $250,000 worth of produce through a farmers market, CSA, and wholesale outlets.

With about fifty percent of their sales going through one farmers market in a mid-sized city, Katie and Hans had a lot to say about how they make that work, from the details of their display and market stand setup, their digital checkout system and the value its data brings to their farming operation, and their farmers market magic sauce – the passion Katie has to connect with their customers. Katie digs into the nuts and bolts of how she connects with customers at farmers market and through social media.

Hans started growing vegetables at his family’s operation in 2009, while he and Katie both lived in the city; over several years, Hans made the transition to full-time farming, and then Katie followed, and then they moved out to the farm. Hans and Katie share how they knew it was time to make the various transitions, how they prepared to make the changes, and how they’ve divided up the responsibilities on the farm. Hans and Katie also provide an honest look at the challenges of farming together, and of bringing a spouse into the operation.

We also dig into the shipping relationships that help PrairiErth Farm reach into the Chicagoland market, how they’ve mechanized their operation to retain and attract good help, and how they’ve changed and continue to improve their employee management practices.

I’m also excited to share that Hans and Katie were selected as the 2017 MOSES Organic Farmers of the Year, an award that recognizes organic farmers who practice outstanding land stewardship, innovation, and outreach.
