MSD is proud to host, for the second time this school year, renowned consultant, psychologist, and best-selling author Dr. Michael Thompson for a deeper look into adolescence. There are five developmental challenges that every adolescent must meet. There are no shortcuts and no exemptions, and these challenges are, from a psychological point of view, very strenuous. At the same time, most adolescents meet them with grace and ingenuity. Despite the images of rebellious and antisocial adolescents in the popular media, fully two-thirds of children have smooth or stepwise patterns of growth during the teenage years, only one-third a tumultuous pattern. This humorous talk provides useful perspective for parents of adolescents and calming preparation for parents of about-to-be-adolescents.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit families. For seven months families have been forced to think about death and safety and to talk to their very young children about it. They are dealing with the loss of regular school, remote learning from home all the while facing threats to employment and the loss of social supports. Many parents are worried that their children will emerge traumatized from this long disruption. In this talk, Dr. Thompson will address the issues and fears affecting families and will offer psychologically sound suggestions for steadying their children and themselves in this difficult time.
