The Government have given the green light for significant new investments in healthcare infrastructure for the North-West region.
A new surgical hub will be located close to Sligo University Hospital, while at Letterkenny University Hospital a new surgical hub is proposed along with expanded oncology services.
The Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, says the Programme for Government committed to exploring the provision of a surgical hub for the North-West and that patients in this region should have access to sufficient and timely surgical capacity.
The HSE will now begin progressing the proposals, which include in Sligo a new stand-alone, two-theatre surgical hub
It's expected that the facility will significantly expand elective surgical capacity in the region.
Meanwhile Letterkenny University Hospital will see the development of a new two-theatre surgical hub beside the existing hospital building, along with the addition of 30 ambulatory day oncology chairs.
There has been a mass welcoming of this monring's announcement.
Sligo TD and Junior Minister Marian Harkin found herself at the centre of the saga after claims that situating a hub in Sligo was part of her terms and conditions for offering her support for the government.
Minister Harkin says it's a real step forward for medical care in the north west to have surgical hubs in the north west.

Donegal Fianna Fail TD Pat the Cope Gallagher has also welcomed the announcement.
Deputy Gallagher says due to the geographical make up of the North West one Hub in either Sligo or Letterkenny was never going to be enough to service the medical needs of the people in the region.

A Donegal TD has expressed his dissatisfaction with no letters of assurance being issued to any defective block homeowner in Donegal.
The letters were due to be issued by the Local Authority in Donegal as part of a 40-year guarantee for homeowners whose properties were remediated under the Defective Concrete Block Grant Scheme.
It's understood that the Council have encounter some issues with the process, but say an update is expected shortly.

A Donegal County Councillor says the Bundoran area is in shock after lost his life after getting into difficulty while swimming on Saturday afternoon.
The man was aged in his 70’s.
Emergency services were called to the ‘Diving Boards’ area near Bundoran on Saturday afternoon, where a man was rescued from the water.
He was taken to Sligo University Hospital, but has since passed away.
It's understood he was a Donegal native, who worked as a musician in London.

A Donegal Publican and member of the Vintners Association says if the Government decided to delay reducing the VAT Hospitality Rate it will spell the end for many businesses that are currently struggling in the sector.
Ballybofey Publican, Martin Harley, says it's vital that the reductions are afforded to all businesses in hospitality and accommodation.
Speaking to Ocean FM news he says delaying the reductions until next year will lead to more pub closures and more jobs being lost in the hospitality sector:
Meanwhile the Irish Hotels Federation is criticising reports that reducing the 9% VAT for hospitality businesses would cost the Exchequer €1 billion euro a year.
The reduced rate is due to expire again in October and the Cabinet will have to decide whether to roll over the reduction for another year.
During the Covid pandemic VAT on hospitality was reduced from 13% to 9% .

It's emerged that a number of applicants in Leitrim are still awaiting correspondence in relation to their application for the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme.
Thousands of homes, farms and businesses throughout the county were left without power for an extended period of time following Storm Éowyn.
Figures published by the Department of Social Protection to 7LÁ earlier this year show there were 4,387 applications in the county.

It's hoped that more can be done to assist coastal communities in west Sligo from further coastal erosion.
There have been ongoing fears that several areas have been left vulnerable due to the erosion with areas such as Easkey and Enniscrone worst hit.
The fund has been increased nationally in recent months to €90,000 to assist those on the ground.
Work began earlier this year to instal rock armour at the Coast Road in Easkey, which is set to provide some comfort to those locally.
However, local Independent Councillor Joe Queenan says greater funding at a national level would be a major step forward in the right direction.

The Community of Maguire’s Bridge in County Fermanagh are attempting to come to terms with the devastating events of yesterday where three people died.
Police are treating the deaths of two children and a woman in a shooting as a triple murder.
A man who was found at the house where the shooting took place is in hospital with serious injuries.

A county Fermanagh community has been left numb after two people have died and two others were seriously injured in a shooting incident.
Emergency services received a call about an incident in a house in the Drummeer Road area of Maguiresbridge at around twenty past eight this morning.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two others were treated for serious injuries before being taken to hospital.

Two people have died and two others were seriously injured in a shooting incident which took place in Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh this morning.
The incident occurred in the Drummeer Road area of the town,
The Road is closed and PSNI say there is no ongoing risk to the public.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 8.21am and dispatched crews to the scene.
It’s been reported that one person was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, and another was taken to South West Acute Hospital in nearby Enniskillen by ambulance.

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council is calling for as many Private Group water schemes to be registered for inspection as soon as possible.
The calls from Cllr. Donal Gilroy come the Environmental Protection Agency says there's an urgent need for mandatory registration of private drinking water supplies.
A number of local private group schemes have been identified as having E coli failures including those at Keelouges, Castlegrange, Gurteen Clonmore, and Carrownadargney
Reacting to the findings in this latest publication the Fianna Fail Councillor, Donal Gilroy says no chances can be taken with conditions such as E.Coli in water schemes.
He says it's vital that all schemes are registered

A Sligo Councillor says serious questions need to be answered how Irish Rail allowed the Local Authority in Sligo spend 1.6 million on the Sligo Greenway when they were fully aware that the project would never come to fruition.
Independent Councillor, Marie Casserly has been a long-time advocate for a Greenway to be established on the track.
She has questioned the narrative being spun by Irish Rail that ‘there is a change in momentum’ towards reinstating the Western Rail Corridor.
The former General Election candidate says we are years away from seeing rail services being restored on the route and that A Greenway will never be allowed to run alongside and active rail line.

Security experts are warning about the use of thousands of controversial Chinese surveillance cameras in public places in the north west.
Hikvision is used by councils, hospitals and universities - despite being banned in many other countries including Australia and the UK.
Queries from The Journal Investigates on whether Donegal County Council still use the devices were not responded to.
It was subsequently discovered that cameras were in use outside Letterkenny Public Services Centre with Hikvision devices believed to be installed in some libraries throughout the county.
