In this episode, we will be introducing a new segment called “Good for the Dhaqan?”. Dhaqan means culture in Somali and sometimes we find ourselves in situations debating topics that are related to Somalinimo or somehow related to our culture and people, and in this segment, we aim to deconstruct what constitutes as Somali culture in the diaspora and whether or not this thing is good or
bad for our culture. This episode will look at cultural appropriation with the brand Zara under the microscope. Zara was accused of culturally appropriating the Somali baati or dirac sheed and we unpack whether this is good or bad for the Somali dhaqan?
Guest appearance by Anisa Ismail owner of Kidz Unplugged
*Glossary:
dhaqan: culture
baati or dirac sheed: a colourful cotton dress usually worn as a house garment by Somali women and girls. Can be tie-dye style but not always.
Somalinimo: We define it as 'Somali-ness' or the embodiment of being Somali, or whatever that may mean to you. We do not define this term politically, and our definition is by no means connected to the 'Somaliwayn' ideology.
