The purpose of this podcast is to go on a journey interviewing professionals in the built environment industry so that we can bring to attention where opportunities lie and what people are really trying to do.
In this episode I welcome Nick Russell to talk about his experiences in the intersection of technology and real estate and what he’s up to now with his venture PropCoin. Nick and I go back around 5 years when we were, in theory, competition to each other. He was the co-founder of one tech startup, and I an early team member at mine. I must point out for clarity that Nick refers to me as a founder/starter of my former employer, the online marketplace appearhere.co.uk but technically I am not, although I gladly take home the title of Employee #1 after the sole founder, Ross. In recent years we’ve got back in touch as we were both coming out of the post 2008 proptech world, seeing the landscape change a bit, and in some cases not change at all. We’ve had many an evening debating the futility of it all, alongside wide eyed enthusiasm for what’s coming next. It’s always a pleasure to sit with Nick as he looks far and wide beyond his own business to dig deep into what’s going on laterally around his, or anyone else’s, business ideas and look for opportunity. It’s a long one this pod as we cover a whole host of issues from blockchain, to proptech, to traditional property, to urban planning, to the retail markets and home ownership, we even step into the mirky waters of ethics and freedom of speech briefly. -

The purpose of this podcast is to go on a journey interviewing professionals in the built environment industry so that we can bring to attention where opportunities lie and what people are really trying to do. This episode I’ve done a slightly different format to the usual tone. In the quest to learn a little more about the state of artificial intelligence I’ve teamed up with Ben Byford, a technologist that runs the Machine Ethics podcast series. In this episode we interview each other. Ben's a friend of Conscious Cities due to his thirst for knowledge in asking deeper questions about the role of AI in our lives.
Amongst many things Ben’s career has focused on applying his theories to games designing, education for companies like Decoded where he is a Facilitator and Teacher, as well as a venture called Eulogy that was focused on connected academic studies to industry better - something we can whole heartedly get behind at Conscious Cities.

This episode I’m delighted to have Patricia Brown on the pod. Patricia’s career in urbanism is vast and with depth. Patricia has been behind movements that have helped shape London as a city since the early 1990s, the types of movements many of us take for granted but had to start somewhere by someone with a great idea and a strategy for implementation. Highlights in her career include in the development of the Business Improvement District model, Chair of the London Festival of Architecture for 3 years, being a part of the Mayor of London’s design advisory panel and being chief executive of the Central London Partnership which was a public/private partnership from 1998-2008 where she worked with Jan Gehl and his team in developing a report on people and public space that shaped policy thereon from mayoral level. Today, Patricia runs her own consultancy, Central. Central works with people across a wide spectrum of sectors, advising and developing approaches to creating the vision, plans and the relationships to achieve better places, cities, economies and lives. Central understands the dynamics of places; the nuances and ecology, together with the importance of people and partnership, in shaping and influencing good or bad outcomes.

One of the great things about Built-ID is the transparency it provides in quite a hidden and cloaked industry. They are also working towards becoming Shazam for the Built Environment. In the podcast we don’t really go on about the company but more to ask Savannah, as an entrepreneur in a progressive technology related company some of her views about the built environment.

In this episode we're speaking with Ashley Perry, a Canadian calling London home as he works at international property services firm JLL, or Jones Lang LaSalle. We’ve got to know Ashley recently through his promotion of, and work within, the more eco-sustainable side of property development. As those of us who live anywhere near construction sites will know, reducing not only air pollution but also issues such as noise pollution is a must, these are some of the things that Ashley’s working on promoting to the major developers that he works for at JLL. With a broad view on the future of the construction industry through technological innovations he’s a great person to have on the podcast to teach us all a little bit more about what’s actually going on in the big bad world of the real estate development industry.

Now, I’ve gone a bit corporate on us here and this is the first in a two-part episode looking at new financing models for property development. Whilst we can look at a variety of means and virtuous ideas for creating Conscious Cities, it also has to be funded by someone, somehow. It’s important to understand what innovations are being made in other sectors, in order to understand ideal collaborations and potential cross-market product fits.
In this episode I’m going to be speaking with Michael Dean, who’s a principal at the firm Avamore Capital. I’ve known Michael for a while now and I’ve always enjoyed speaking with him as he looks at his industry with quite a rounded view. Whilst working for corporate firms he’s also an avid fan of what technology is bringing to his industry, mostly by the way of proptech and fintech.

In this first episode I’m going to be speaking with James Dearsley of the Digital Marketing Bureau on the topic of PropTech. For those of you un-familiar with the popular twitter hashtag PropTech is the intersection of technology and the real estate industry, first arriving as a popular term around 2012/2013 it is spawning a whole host of businesses, some with a hope of disrupting and others just seeing how something can be improved.
