Creating a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was no small feat. However, the directorial trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K.Thompson created a synergy that is already having audiences beg for more. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is simply the most visually stunning and action-packed superhero film of the year -- if not in years -- while also managing to create an intense story with emotional depth. Thus, it makes sense that these three are Consequence's 2023 Filmmakers of the Year -- but they aren't the only ones who deserve credit.
Editorial Director Ben Kaye chatted with Dos Santos, Powers, and Thompson about how it took three directors and over 1,000 crew members to make this epic entry in the Spider-Man canon, AI, and sequel rumors. Take a listen for all this and more on this latest episode of Consequence UNCUT, and read the full story on Consequence.

For many, their first taste of Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke came with 2021’s in-your-face banger “Don’t Play with It.” The track’s skittering trap beat, aggressive flow, and sheer confidence made it a favorite both in the scene and online, sparking somewhat of a viral trend. Spend time on the internet and you’ll soon hear some variation on “the grind never stops.” But after nearly 50 years in the music industry, Jimmy Iovine, now 70, begs to differ: “Maybe there’s one person in their 80s or 90s that could be as effective and is in it as much as somebody who’s 40 or even 50, but I don’t want to be that person,” he says, “I want to experiment. I want to do a lot of things. I want to help people, but everywhere I’m involved has great CEOs in it. I’m not the CEO. The hook is not in my mouth. I spit out that hook.”

It is TV Theme Songs Week at Consequence, where we have been ranking and deep-diving into your favorite TV themes.
One iconic theme is “Tossed Salad and Scramble Eggs” from Frasier, and with the show freshly rebooted for a sequel series on Paramount+, it was also time for a fresh take on the song. To learn more about this and the current state of TV theme songs, Liz Shannon Miller spoke to composers Bruce and Jason T. Miller.
Bruce composed the original Frasier theme (along with Wings, Becker, and others), and brought on his son, Jason (‘Til Death, The Odd Couple -- as well as tracks for Kanye West, Keyshia Cole, and Reba McEntire) for the reboot to match the story seeing Frasier himself (Kelsey Grammer) reconnecting with his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).
The Millers are not only father and son, but they are also best friends and creative partners. This is why getting their boots-on-the-ground perspective about their Frasier revamp and the current state of the theme song literally blew our socks off.
“It was like, 'Don't mention anything about Seattle, nothing about crazy people, nothing about psychiatry, psychology, anything that has to do with the show, but make it germane to the show,'" Bruce recalls of writing the original theme.
Check out the Frasier on Paramount + here.
Listen to the full interview with Bruce and Jason T. Miller now and you can read the full article on Consequence.net. In this episode of Consequence Uncut, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller sits down with Allen Hughes to talk about his new FX Docuseries Dear Mama, a five-part documentary miniseries about the life of Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur.
As one half of the filmmaking duo the Hughes Borthers alongside his twin brother Albert, Allen Hughes is an acclaimed director, screenwriter, and producer. The pair made their feature film debut with 1993’s Menace II Society, a gritty and realistic portrayal of life in the inner city that’s been lauded for its complex exploration of the social and moral issues present in urban Los Angeles life in the early '90s. Infamously, Tupac was originally slated to star in the film, but a disagreement and eventual altercation led to the rapper spending 15 days in jail instead.
In addition to discussing Dear Mama, Hughes and Miller celebrate Hip-Hop 50, touching on the filmmaker’s beginnings in making music videos and how hip-hop has influenced pop culture and society at large.
” Hip-hop did something that no other medium and art form in the history of mankind and womankind did, which is [that it] completely consumed everything in its path. And, you saw how, in the last five years – it was happening for 30, 40 years – it became the number one selling genre of music because it literally envelops everything in its path and nothing can survive hip-hop’s path because it just adopts in. So R&B became hip-hop. Rock became hip-hop. Country became hip-hop. So you can’t compete with that.”
