  • Barbara Lane speaks with Paul Krauss MA LPC about her extraordinary true story of living in the foster care system, suffering abuse, healing, and reuniting with her sisters after 43 years of separation.

At three, orphan life with my sisters wasn't bad--it was basically all I knew. Love filled the void left by our parents. But our separation shattered that love and we were lost in the system and separated for most of our lives. The pain lingered for 43 years until a miraculous discovery and reunion occurred. "Broken Water" tells my story - surviving foster care abuse while searching for my sisters. It's a journey of reunion, shared histories of hardship, and a testament to resilience, sisterhood, and faith. In her writing, Rev. Barbara Lane incorporates her experiences as a foster kid, educator, ministerial counselor, speaker, entrepreneur, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and author. Barbara de-stigmatizes the fate of child abuse survivors by sharing her own story, which inspired her to create "Broken Water." In addition to her 25 years of experience working as a ministerial counselor in private practice, Barbara is inspired to share her knowledge of related topics by her education in human development, social sciences, and family psychology with a focus on child abuse. These topics include the family, family separation, the foster care system, attachment and bonding, child maltreatment, relationship formation, the human spirit's resiliency, healing from trauma, and the strength that comes from believing in a force bigger than oneself. • Paul Krauss MA LPC and Laurie Belanger LCSWR speak about the foundations of what Trauma-Informed Care really means in the context of our greater society, not just mental health practice or trauma therapy. Laurie and Paul discuss the intersections of Trauma-Informed Care and change in greater society

This is a different way of approaching human behavior and it really ought to help us question, reorganize or even dismantle many of our institutions of care (medical, educational...for starters) and build something better. That may sound a bit ambitious, yet it becomes pretty clear once you begin unpacking the core concepts of Polyvagal Theory.

Neuroscience and Trauma therapists agree: It's something like a ‘Windows update’ for "being a human.” We are living in a very strange time in history. We actually have the knowledge that we need to create more compassionate and science backed care and education of every member of society. Yet we are falling farther and farther behind in many real spaces. Much of it comes down to systems that were not designed with emotional safety in mind as being important for learning or healing physical health issues. Fear of change keeps broken systems in place. This means that trauma-informed providers and educators are out here in society trying to share and equip a community working from within systems that were not designed to work that way.

Rather than become discouraged, Laurie Belanger LCSWR is talking about it. As citizens, the steps we can all take from within the outdated systems we are working within. We are talking about the possibilities of someday re-inventing the systems that no longer serve us.

Laurie Belanger LCSWR is a licensed Clinical Social Worker & Trauma Psychotherapist in New York State. With a bachelors in Psychology from Moravian University and a Masters in Social Work from The University at Buffalo Graduate School of Social work, Laurie continues to pursue a lifetime of advanced learning attending conferences and training herself on the advances continuing to be made in the field of trauma, social work and psychology.

  • Dr. Ryan Lambros and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss: Is Religious Deconstruction Good for your Mental Health? Deconstruction is the free act of valuing (evaluating) what was, experiencing what is, and holding a posture of curiosity moving forward.

Some points to consider: A.The intention of this discussion is not to destroy a faith system. It’s not even to deconstruct a faith system. “De” words won’t provide holistic health. Rather, the intention is to evaluate systems, dogmas, and ideas based on our experience and reason. Curiosity and compassion are key to pursuing spiritual health. The intention is to offer freedom, hope, and beauty for people to pursue healing in their spiritual journey. B. Why are so many people deconstructing Evangelical Christianity and leaving the church? C. The church isn’t controlling the narrative anymore. D. Are we lacking deep and meaningful spirituality practices in our current culture?

Also Discussed: Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Evangelical movement, Power, Money, Control, a partial History of the Church, Sex-Cult, Patriarchy, bibliolatrous behavior, critical thinking, scientific exploration, Spirituality, Healthy Spirituality, Unhealthy spirituality, Gaslighting, Narcissism, Truth, "truth", Catholic Priest letters from 500 years ago, Jesus, the Book of Enoch, the Gnostic Gospels, the Bible, US Politics, dogma, tithing, religious fundamentalism, capitalism's influence on the church, purity culture, internal family systems, counseling, therapy, trauma, defense mechanisms, human adaptation, "the self", integration, healing spirituality, curiosity, compassion, learning from myths, etc.

Dr. Ryan Lambros is a Certified Life Coach and Chaplain in Gilbert, AZ. He is married to Jessica, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and they have two sons. Ryan completed his doctorate from Northwind Seminary with his doctoral work focusing on the intersection of philosophy and psychology as it pertains to a phenomenological metaphysic of healing. Ryan is passionate about walking with people in their healing journey, specifically in relationships and religious trauma.

"On this immediate level of life and structure, myths offer life models. But the models have to be appropriate to the time in which you are living, and our time has changed so fast that what was proper fifty years ago is not proper today. The virtues of the past are the vices of today. And many of what were thought to be the vices of the past are the necessities of today. The moral order has to catch up with the moral necessities of actual life in time, here and now. And that is what we are not doing. The old-time religion belongs to another age, another people, another set of human values, another universe. By going back you throw yourself out of sync with history. Our kids lose their faith in the religions that were taught to them, and they go inside."- Joseph Campbell

Myth is powerful not just because it holds value in its literal-ness (which it may), but because it transcends the literal facts as well - offering us something more valuable than truth
beauty. -Dr. Ryan Lambros

  • Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with Andy Clark, Ph.D. about the human brain, consciousness, and functions of the mind. This is an episode for anyone who is curious about how human consciousness forms our reality and functions in real time. Andy has a great deal of excellent examples, stories, and anecdotes to share.

"Human brains are prediction machines,” contends Clark (Surfing Uncertainty), a cognitive philosophy professor at the University of Sussex, in this eye-opening study. Pushing back against the idea that the brain passively processes information from the senses, Clark argues that the organ is instead constantly predicting external reality based on previous experiences and adjusting mental impressions as new information arises.

Andy Clark's new book: THE EXPERIENCE MACHINE: How Our Minds Predict and Shape Reality (2023 | Pantheon), professor of cognitive philosophy Andy Clark’s brilliant new theory of the mind that upends our understanding of how the brain interacts with the world.

  • Songwriter and musician Bart Davenport has a deep conversation about the artistic process with Paul Krauss MA LPC in this episode. Throughout the episode, clips of Bart Davenport's songs are played, stories are shared, insights come easy, and the lyrics and tales that form through the music are expounded upon. For the psychology and philosophy fans, there is existentialism aplenty in this conversation from Bart Davenport and Paul Krauss. Whether you are a music lover or not, you are going to love this episode.

Depending on who you ask, Bart Davenport might be many different things. He has performed as a blues singer, a softrock troubadour, and a mod. He is a versatile singer-songwriter who possesses the classic voice of a true crooner. He resides in Los Angeles, where he does music. His work transports us to an imagined past or present that is full of beautiful odes and intriguing characters. It is smooth but weirdly pointed. In spite of taking place in a fantastical setting, Davenport's works frequently reflect contemporary issues. Davenport just recorded twelve new songs in his own studio, leaning back to acoustic guitars and the baroque pop tones of the 1960s. His eighth studio album, titled "Episodes," is expected to be released on Tapete Records in March 2022.

  • John Hands stops by the Intentional Clinician with Paul Krauss MA LPC to talk about some of the current large fears that are circulating the information-overload culture as well as mass and social medias. John Hands spent more than 10 years writing his first non-fiction book COSMOSAPIENS: Human Evolution from the Origin of the Universe. Some of John's methods involve summarizing current scientific data from a multitude of sources into digestible chunks, and then sending out chapter drafts to professors and scientists worldwide for critiques for publishing. Having spent a great deal of time writing about the origins of humankind, John Hand's latest book and this podcast concern his analysis and predictions of the future. John's book is entitled: THE FUTURE OF HUMANKIND: Why We Should Be Optimistic. Many of you may be surprised by this title, as was I. However, John's main question he seeks to answer is "Will human beings become extinct?" due to various human concerns including warfare, bioweapons, pandemics, climate change, solar activity, mass geological events, asteroids and comets, artificial intelligence, etc.

The resounding conclusion of John Hand's research is "No. Humans will become extinct from the issues." Of course, John is not a denier of issues. There will be plenty of problems and death due to most of the above issues. In fact, he suggests that millions of people will die and cultures will be disrupted as a result of the changing climate--however, his hard look at the data concludes there are too many factors and models that he believes the earth will not just "burn up" like the runaway hypothesis, but will change dramatically due to various factors and measurements that he lists and outlines in the book. However, John does not believe humans will become extinct due to climate change--though life will be altered for many. This may sound surprising and outright blasphemous to people like myself who are deeply concerned the climate and ecology, but I urge you to listen to this podcast and read John's work as it is deeply researched and fearlessly explored without any agenda, political stripe, or monied interest. These subjects are far too complicated to explore fully in this paragraph or in the podcast, but John has an interesting and balanced take. Check out the book here: THE FUTURE OF HUMANKIND: Why We Should Be Optimistic

John Hands is the author of critically acclaimed nonfiction books and novels, and has been published in 12 countries. He was trained in science, specializing in chemistry, at the University of London where he had been the first undergraduate President of the Union. He co-authored two research studies and published one book in the social sciences. He tutored in physics and in management studies for Britain’s Open University, was visiting lecturer at the University of North London and then RLF Fellow at University College London where he began more than 10 years writing COSMOSAPIENS Human Evolution from the Origin of the Universe. He has also written three novels published in the UK and the USA, one of which was also published in six other countries.
