In this Father’s Day episode special I am speaking to theatre legend, Thelma Holt.
At 89 years old, Thelma is an encyclopaedia of stories and anecdotes, and, coupled with a fascinating life and career, she really is the dream guest for any podcast - so, I was delighted to hear we both lost our father’s at the same ripe old age of 7, and I could get her onto mine.
Thelma, a graduate of RADA and co-founder of the Open Space Theatre, became director of the Roundhouse in 1976 before joining Peter Hall at the National Theatre as commercial producer. In 1987 she received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement for her international work at the National. She received a second Olivier Special Recognition Award in 2020.
After leaving the NT, for Peter Hall she produced Orpheus Descending with Vanessa Redgrave and The Merchant of Venice with Dustin Hoffman in London and New York. Her inaugural production as an independent producer was Three Sisters with Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave and Jemma Redgrave. Subsequent productions include Tango at the End of Winter (directed by Yukio Ninagawa) and Hamlet both with Alan Rickman in the leading role, A Doll's House with Janet McTeer, which won four Tony Awards, The Clandestine Marriage with Nigel Hawthorne and Kean with Antony Sher.
She represented the Cameron Mackintosh Drama Fund at Oxford University for 20 years, is an Emeritus Fellow of St Catherine's College and became a Distinguished Friend of Oxford in 2006. She was delighted that Cameron Mackintosh named a bar at the Noel Coward Theatre as a tribute to her in 2019.
As Associate Producer for the RSC she has, with HoriPro Inc, toured Japan with the RSC's productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She co-produced in the West End the RSC's five Jacobean plays, The Taming of the Shrew and Tamer Tamed, All's Well That Ends Well, The Crucible, The Canterbury Tales, Imperium, Don Quixote and most recently Kunene and the King. In Japan she co-produced with Horipro Inc. The Merchant of Venice and Anjin – The English Samurai, both directed by Gregory Doran.
Thelma was producer for all of Yukio Ninagawa’s productions that were performed in the UK for a period of 30 years, including his final memorial production of Macbeth at the Barbican in 2017. In recognition of her promotion of Japanese theatre, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan.
This bio merely scrapes the surface of Thelma’s life and achievements - as does this episode - due to the fact that, as Thelma puts so brilliantly towards the end of the episode, ‘life is a hell of a lot of fun’. And fun she has had.

In this weeks episode I am speaking to Jamie Windust.
Jamie is an award-winning editor, writer, speaker, model, and activist (a true multi-hyphenated-multi-talented Gen Z).
Jamie is an invincible voice for change within the fashion and beauty industries, having modelled for Gucci, LOVE Magazine, and DB Berden, alongside their magazine FRUITCAKE winning Graduate Fashion Week in London, in 2018, which has now been sold in countries all over the world.
Jamie has written for national publications such as Metro UK, The Independent and Gay Times, and in December, 2019, was asked to speak at the 2nd TEDxLondon Womens' event at The Queen Elizabeth Hall. A very important talk to listen to - the link is below.
Excitingly Jamie has recently released their first debut book, In Their Shoes, which on its very first day already shot to the top of the charts.
In this episode Jamie touches on how they had to navigate an identity they weren’t given any example of - coming from a small, rural town - alongside a family who had yet to understand the fluidity of gender beyond societies conformities. Luckily, Jamie managed to start blogging their experiences online and found not only a voice, but also a community of like-minded people, and a place and reassurance of their own identity.
Jamie is a delight of a person, and this episode was a true joy to record....enjoy!

In this weeks episode I am speaking to the wonderful Billie JD Porter.
Billie is a journalist and filmmaker from London, who has traveled the world reporting and authoring documentaries for the likes of the BBC, Channel4 and Vice. As a writer, she contributes to a number of worldwide publications, covering music, politics and everything in between. Billie currently lives in Los Angeles, where she is working on her debut feature documentary.
I have been a fan of Billie’s since we were both teens, and so whilst I was working out what topics to bring up when I saw the boy I fancied to insure no awkward silences could ever be felt (which I am not saying isn’t valid for a 15 year old…)she was cracking on making epic documentaries that were bettering the world. I’d watch in awe as this fellow peer of mine would investigate all sorts of fascinating subject matters with a confidence, articulacy and directness I aspired to possess myself one day.
Just over a decade later we met in LA and our mutual friend mentioned that the podcast I run was relevant to Billie’s own experiences with her parents - and so, we got talking. Six moths and a whole COVID-19 cycle later after that, we’re recording from my room in London. and Billie's room in LA.
Billie is a child of two parents who were addicts, and as an only child, learnt to be independent - not out of expectation or example - but out of total necessity. Billie speaks about her life experiences with the same authenticity and direct honesty that she’s done throughout all her work, and it was a total privilege to hear her tell this part of her story.

In this weeks episode I am speaking with Bertie Gilbert.
Bertie is a writer and director based in London. He serves as a pioneer for a new wave of young filmmakers, and was recently classified as one of the 'Five New Wes Andersons' by Dazed. In 2016 he was also part of the Dazed 100, a 'definitive list of creatives shaping youth culture'.
Bertie played my husband - and I his wife - for a web series in 2017, and so it was just lovely to see and speak to him all these years later about something we'd had no idea was a real common thread of familiarity and experience between us.
Bertie's father, journalist Chris Gilbert, died of a brain tumour when Bertie was just 7. He has since been trying to not only navigate and seek his own sense of masculinity - and thus identity - but also, somewhat, society's. Bertie brings forward fascinating insights and perspectives that I was yet to hear, having been doing this podcast for a year, on what it is to be a fatherless son, how it can feel, and how that can manifest itself.
We also speak on grief, finding role models, losing a father/parent at a young age, how a sudden death can result in a need to preserve time, and David Tennant's aftershave.
Having only recently found a language to express how he feels in regards to his father, his death and his absence, it was a true gift to be able to sit with Bertie and both hear and explore his current and reasonably new understanding of it all.

In this weeks episode I am speaking to Reggie Nelson.
I first heard of Reggie Nelson when a friend started harassing my phone to get me to stop whatever I was doing and turn on Radio 4. It was broadcasting an interview with Reggie where he’d been asked to appear on Four Thought to speak about his extraordinary life transformation, which led him to gain one of the most senior members of investment management company, BlackRock, as a mentor, become Whatsapp pals with Theresa May, and host his own podcast for the BBC. It didn’t take me long to completely stop all I was doing, and just listen, transfixed.
Not only was I hearing a beautiful piece of spoken word - which is how Reggie chose to deliver his story - but I also was in complete awe of this man’s story of survival, strength, resilience, determination and faith. He'd grown up with an absent father due to both alcoholism and separation, with his father’s death eventually acting as the catalyst that pushed him to make the changes that he did, and become who he is today. I needed to get him on Daddy Issues.
I found him on Twitter, emailed him, and waited. Weeks later an email popped into my inbox with the green light, and weeks after that, we recorded this wonderful episode.
I am SO in awe of this man, and can’t wait to watch him continue to flourish and change, in his own words, ‘as many other lives as possible’ whilst doing so.

In this weeks episode I am speaking to writer and poet, Cecilia Knapp.
Cecilia and I had met before when I had the delight of looking after her at a charity event. I remember distinctly feeling mortified over how many tears I found pouring down my cheeks whilst she performed, considering I was supposed to be working, and not just a spectator of the show. Meeting her again, and as intimately as the podcast allows us, was just the best of treats.
Cecilia has experienced more grief than most at her age, having lost her mother (and her life, as she knew it) at the age of seven, and then her beloved brother, Leo, at the age of 20. Her father was very often out working in order to fund her and her brother's new arrival in his house (meaning they were often left to their own devices), and, with all the loss she was dealing with, Cecilia could have easily gone down the more dangerous path of escapism and self destruction. However, for reasons she herself doesn’t quite understand - and perhaps even struggles somewhat with - it only pushed her to succeed and become fiercely independent. Cecilia’s brother, Leo, however, coped very differently.
This episode is somewhat a poignant look into how trauma - and a child's coping mechanisms - can manifest so differently between siblings, even when they are in the same environment and are at a very similar age. And how a father, who's life had also dramatically altered, wasn't able to be there as much as was needed for his children both physically (as he needed to fund their very existence), and emotionally (due his own life experiences of communicating), but, just like everyone else, was also coping in the only way he knew how.
I am so hugely inspired by this woman’s story, and you will be too.

This weeks episode is with New York based award-winning writer, director and producer, Miranda Haymon.
Miranda's father died of cancer when she was 9 years old, having been diagnosed what felt like moments before. Having interviewed and spoken on grief a fair deal over this past year, I had yet to come across of the kind of reflection Miranda has with her grief, which, I think, is utterly remarkable and potentially life-changing. How it is, and thus must be acknowledged, as it's very own person. So, in its infancy, it must be treated as an infant, and allowed to scream, cry and have tantrums. It needs to be fed, nurtured and held. Protected and soothed. And then, as a teenager, it must be heard, listened to, but equally, held accountable. It is angry then, and often, all encompassing.
This episode is full of such beautifully poignant reflections on grief, daddy issues and drive, from a truly insightful introspective mind. And I can't wait for you to hear it.

This weeks guest is a little different again, as it’s with Nurudeen Kyari, who’s father, Abba Kyari (former Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria) died only this April from COVID-19.
Nuda (as I’ve always known him) and I were at school together and when he reached out (having heard Harry Bell, another school friends episode) I was so incredibly moved, but also somewhat surprised that he was willing to talk about his fathers unexpected and tragic death so soon after it happened.
However, during our interview, I realised why Nuda was ready. Nuda is, of course, still very much grieving, and speaks openly about what his process has been, however, what struck me so deeply is that he seems to have (helped by his incredible faith) found a peace, and even gratitude, with his fathers death that is nothing short of inspiring and heart-opening.
Nuda’s wisdom and life perspective needs to be shared with the world, and so I feel so incredibly honoured to have had just a slice of it on Daddy Issues Podcast.

This weeks episode is with theatre, comedy and screen producer, KITTY WORDSWORTH.
Kitty and I have been comrades in the DDC (Dead Dad Club) since we met at University, and for so many years had these intimate, private conversations (usually lying in bed at the dead of night - no pun intended) talking about our grief and how we felt about our consecutive deceased dads. These conversations we’re definitely led by Kitty - I take no credit - as Kitty walks through the world with an authentic and direct honesty which allows people to trust and feel comfortable around her instantly. This transparency luckily doesn’t stop at subject matters most find awkward or taboo, allowing whoever she’s speaking to to feel as if they could just be discussing what they had for lunch that day. She allowed me talk about my dad in a way nobody ever had. She has a gift she doesn’t even know she’d giving.
Kitty’s career started earlier than most, producing shows at Jermyn Street Theatre at the ripe old age of 21 and founding a theatre company (@damselproductions) at the age of 22, where she has showcased performances at Soho Theatre, Theatre Royal Haymarket, The Bunker, Theatre 503, Live@Zedel and Southwark Playhouse, to name just a few.
Her work ethic and savvy creativity has always inspired me, and it was so very wonderful having her on Daddy Issues to delve back into our no.1 fave topic.

This weeks episode is with former Premier League footballer turned producer, writer, public speaker, entrepreneur and CALM ambassador, MARVIN SORDELL.
Marvin’s father left when he was 5 years old. Other than knowing that he is a visual replica of his father, he knows little else, and other than an unexpected phone call at the age of 19, he has had no contact with him.
At the age of 13 Marvin was scouted by Chelsea, and was quickly thrusted into the world of professional football. However, being a footballer didn’t make being fatherless any easier, and Marvin witnessed a grim and backward side of the sport whilst seeing the difference the coaches would treat his teammates fathers, compared to his mother.
Marvin was told more than once that he should look to another profession by those who were meant to support him - teachers and coaches. This only pushed him to work harder, proving that he was never going to live down to their expectations of him. Marvin’s father was, of course, another adult not there to support him, believe in him, or help push him to his greatest potential in a sport so focused on fathers and sons.
At the age of 28, Marvin decided to retire. He’d had enough of the darker side of the sport. It’s in-house bullying, racism and business objectives which can make a player feel sub-human. So, Marvin turned to his more creative side and co-founded a thriving video production company, 180 Productions, amongst many other exciting ventures, making a focus of his to speak openly on mental health - having gone through his own experience of depression during the latter years of his football career.
When Marvin himself became a father, he had to face a wound he hadn’t realised ran so deep.
Marvin was the most incredible, honest and open guest, and I am so excited for you to hear his beautiful episode.

In this weeks episode I talk to the unbelievable woman and world class dancer, Asantewa Cotterell.
Having lost her beloved father to suicide at the age of 14, Asantewa has spent the last 16 years not only trying to come to terms with her grief, but also the immense pain that comes from unanswered questions, and the knowledge that her father had clearly thought through this decision to leave her and her family.
Asantewa threw herself into dance, not only as a distraction, but as a way to express herself, and her grief. Asantewa is now one of the worlds most successful backing dancers, having shared the stage with Pharrell Williams, N.E.R.D., Beyone, Cardi B and Lizzo...to name just a few.
This is such an important, poignant and, at times, incredibly funny episode (Asantewa has a wonderfully dark sense of humour), and I can't thank Asantewa enough for sharing her story, which was driven by the fact that she hopes that in doing so, she may help someone else who has had a similar experience.

And we are finally UP with this weeks episode, which is a little different to usual, as the guest is my school friend of 16 years, Harry Bell.
Two months before qualifying as a lawyer, and just a year ago this week, Harry’s father, the PR titan Lord Bell, passed away due to complications ensuing from vascular Parkinsonism.
Lord Bell was a key advisor to Margaret Thatcher in her three successful election campaigns and went on to be Chairman of Chime Communications, and then on to co-found PR machine, Bell Pottinger.
Harry beautifully articulates his experience of what growing up with a successful father was like, and how it effected his own ideas of himself, his direction in life, his notions of success, confidence and identity in the world.
I also wanted to get Harry onto the podcast as not only did I want him to talk about his very recent and prevalent experience of grief, and fatherlessness, but he himself was keen to come on to speak about what he’d found to be an awkward subject amongst peers, wishing to break this taboo so many of us feel when talking about death.
It was an incredible and special experience interviewing such a close and old friend, although Harry couldn’t help but bring up a wholly inappropriate story about a time I lost a necklace.

Grief has been a recurring and relentless theme in Jack's life, having lost his father to cancer at the tender age of 15, and then a best friend to suicide at the age of 21.
Both these tragic deaths had a huge impact on Jack's direction in life and career trajectory, co-writing a show about his fathers death with his 85 year old nan, Good Grief, and then, Happy Hour, a comedic tribute to his friend lost to suicide. Both shows received high acclaim at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, after which he went on to present his own BBC Three documentary series, Happy Man, the BBC Radio 4 comedy, Good Grief, and was also BBC Radio 1’s on-air expert in bereavement and mental health for The Surgery.
Jack’s shows were such a success they transferred on to London’s Soho Theatre, Latitude Festival and The Roundhouse., and then in 2019 he was asked to contribute an essay to the award-winning book 'It’s Not OK to Feel Blue (& Other Lies)', curated by Scarlett Curtis. Finally, and very excitingly, his debut publication, Cheer the F**K Up is just starting it’s book tour, and is out to buy!
Jack has that amazing ability to lighten and make silliness of subject matters which are usually laden with weight and taboo, whilst managing to create a healthy channel for his own grief to express itself.
His wisdom and understanding of the world is well beyond his 26 years, and thank goodness there are people like him making conversations which are so often avoided, accessible and brilliantly funny to anyone and everyone who comes across his work.

I am SO EXCITED to give you an episode from front woman of the unbelievably sexy and cool rock band, Yonaka...THERESA JARVIS!
Having only formed 5 years ago, they’ve already toured with Bring Me the Horizon and Fever 333, and have supported Kasabian, The Cult and The Libertines, and have had songs featured in the film Fast and furious, wrestling channel, WWE, online game, League of Legends, and TV show, The Flash...to name just a few.
Having not seen each other since music school, Theresa and I bumped into each other at a Christina Aguilera gig (I know) late last year and blew up each other’s eardrums attempting to catch up. Turned out she’d become a fan of the podcast, whilst I’d become a mega fangirl of her rock band, Yonaka. To my utter joy Theresa asked to come onto the podcast to tell her story. It was so moving to hear a part of her life I had no idea existed behind this light, vibrant and incredible woman. (And WHAT a woman). She makes me laugh more than most and lights up every room she walks into. She is a true example of someone who has managed to channel something painful and traumatic into something positive and creative for herself. She is an inspiration and I am OBSESSED with her (can you tell?).

As CEO of the worlds largest anti-bullying charity, Ditch the Label, Liam is a shining example of how to turn what was once a painfully negative experience into a positive one, not only for himself, but one which benefits the lives of others and makes the world a better place. Having been rejected by his father, his fathers family, and his peers at school, it would be understood if Liam held on to a fair bit of resentment, however, his ability to forgive, empathise and feel compassion for those who are easily vilified due to their actions, having once been a victim to them himself, is not only inspiring, but is a huge lesson to take away for most of us. In this week’s episode I speak to the incredible singer/songwriter that is Grace Carter.
This episode was recorded just before the death of George Floyd, however the conversation could not be more relevant in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. Moving, at the age of 8, to a predominantly white area in the UK with her white mother, but with the absence of her black father, Grace speaks openly of her struggles with navigating her identity in an environment she felt, and was reminded, that she was ‘different’.
This episode is a poignant look into the life of a successful young female, both channeling the heartache of her fathers absence, alongside overcoming and embracing an, at times, torturous identity struggle related to the lack of example she was given within the identity she is defined by - by both society, and the industry in which she works.
Grace’s music is open, honest and raw - cutting to the heart of difficult issues. This was reflected in this beautifully articulated conversation. You are bound to fall in love with her as music as I did!

Leonard Sekyonda is an Author, Life Coach and Entrepreneur. At 19 years old Leonard jumped straight into the deep end, setting-up his first international business flying to South Asia (Philippines) and recruiting nurses to the UK. All this, and more, before the age of 30...fml.
Leonards dad death propelled him into a mindset where he lived everyday like his last - he'd learnt very young that death could happen anytime, to anyone. So why be afraid to live?
I recorded Leonard well before quarantine, but wanted to release him today, rather than a quarantine recorded episode, as Leonards lens on life is so hugely inspirational, I think it needs to be heard, and learnt, during this time of isolation and introspection. In the first quarantine-recorded Daddy Issues episode Angharad speaks to the incredible Jada Sezer. Having lost her father at the tender age of 23 to bowl cancer, Jada threw herself into the risky world of modelling, turning away from the safer path of following her recently completed master's degree in becoming a child psychologist. Although her father somewhat disapproved of her decision, he still managed to muster the strength on his death-bed to tell her 'Well, if you're going to be a model, you're going to be the best model out there'. Those words, that permission and his instilled sense of duty for her to always 'give back', are what Jada believes got her to where she is today.

Season Two of Daddy Issues Podcast is being kicked off by the AMAZING reality TV star, co-founder of gourmet sweet company, Candy Kittens, and fellow podcaster, JAMIE LAING.
Jamie's parents divorced when he was eight, which not only moved Jamie from his family home in the countryside to a new home in London with his mother, but he was also soon sent off to boarding school not long after. Losing everything he knew as familiar, he began seeking validation from friends, girls and being the one making everyone laugh. What this really was, was Jamie terrified to lose anyone else in his life, so had started his long-term relationship with people pleasing, saying 'yes' to promises he couldn't fulfil, and always wanting to be liked. Jamie recently realised that having thought he'd figured himself out by the latter half of his twenties, his early thirties have, in fact, left him feeling much less grounded than he expected. He's having to finally face his relationship with his father, and how, with a new perspective of life and deeper level of understanding, he intends to change it for the better. -
Clara Amfo is a radio and TV broadcaster best known for her work on BBC Radio 1, (she currently presents Radio 1's infamous Live Lounge).
On the 7th March, 2015, Clara's dad's life was cut short by a sudden and unexpected heart attack. He was in Ghana attending a funeral at the time. Clara - who was in Paris about to run the half marathon - had to put her life on pause and get back home to her family. Feeling overwhelmed and craving escapism, Clara threw herself into her new role as BBC Radio 1's Official Chart show and unhealthy romantic relationships. Eventually, however, grief caught up with her and she had to face what had happened, and how that felt.
In this episode we talk all things death, grief, work, loss, relationships and...daddy issues!
A year after Clara's dad died, she bravely went back to Paris to face that half-marathon run which had gotten so brutally cut short. Fortunately for us it was filmed and broadcast by the BBC, and is finally back up for people to see. Make sure you have a watch:
