  • Hey ADDers! So glad you could join me for today’s episode – ADHD and Executive Function Skills Through Dr B’s Eyes.

Back in the late 1970’s I had Graves Disease, which simply put is an overactive or hyperactive thyroid gland. ...Being an options thinker, I explored acupuncture, which addresses issues of energy directly and visualization techniques, which have been researched as very effective in the treatment of cancer. Plus, some reading in Louise Hay’s book “Healing Your Body” helped me to understand the metaphysical aspects of my thyroid, which is about speaking my truth. So, between the use of the medication, acupuncture, and visualization techniques with self-dialogue, I was able to release the hyperactive energy from my thyroid gland without the need for surgery or radiation. Everything that had happened to my eyes and thyroid gland went back to normal and you couldn’t tell it ever happened.

I share the stories in this episode with you, so you have a little sense of my worldview on wellness and how the limited options we are often given are just that – limited and limiting.

  • Hey ADDers! So glad you could join me for today’s episode - Executive Function Basics about Focus, Priorities and Effective Decision Making. I wanted to share some important tools with you that I’ve taught students before.

Without the skills to focus, prioritize and make effective decisions, you are most likely going to be stressed and spinning your wheels a lot, seeing very little results at the end of each day. And like you, I know how awful that feels, and am grateful to have developed the skills I needed to do these things more easily, and teach them to others so they are less stressed too. I trust the information in this episode will give you a start at developing these critically important skills and lessen your stressors, especially during this holiday season when there is so much more to focus on, prioritize and of course, make decisions on.

Without the skills to plan, schedule and follow through there is a lot that you won’t be able to do very efficiently. I trust the information in this episode will give you a start at developing these critically important skills and lessen your stressors, especially during this holiday season.

And since that’s the truth, let’s set blame aside, and focus on getting you the skills you can start developing today, that will make a significant difference in the quality of your life.

ADHD that is diagnosed in adulthood doesn’t travel alone; rather it often comes with “companion challenges” such as depression, anxiety, addictions, trauma and even illnesses. Sometimes these “companion challenges” are there as a result of this later in life diagnosis and sometimes not.

  • Hey ADDers! So glad you could join me for today’s episode about getting organized – the fun way. If you’re like other adults with ADHD and under-developed executive function life skills, you may be thinking, “no way can getting organized be fun!” And then there’s the maintenance after you get organized, so you can stay that way. It’s the #1 issue that many of you voted on in my Facebook group, and said you dread, procrastinate on and hate to do. I get it.

I made sure to include fun in this episode because I learned long ago that I needed to create games out of pretty much everything I do so that it’s fun and I look forward to it. Whether it’s: beat the clock or making a movie out of a project or taking on the role of someone who does a task really well or dressing up in something fun… I think of ways to make it fun for myself so there’s no procrastination or resistance. I’d love for you to feel the same way about getting yourselves organized – the fun way.

  • Hey ADDers! Many of you are living without well-developed executive function skills and strategies and perhaps don’t know it. Or maybe you do…but you don’t know what can be done. You’ve had these struggles in one form or another for most of your life and if they were going to improve, they certainly would have by now. Fair enough… You’ve come to the conclusion that you must have treatment resistant ADHD or really bad ADHD because it just isn’t getting any better; in fact, it might even be getting worse. You’re showing up late more often, forgetting things, taking longer to get your paperwork done – whether for work or school. In fact, your mind might feel like it’s speeding along, yet your thinking is actually slower and less clear.

As I've said before, there are many reasons why these skills get derailed in their development. It's not your fault that your skills aren’t as fully developed “yet” as you need them to be, and you are responsible for developing them now, if you want your life to work better. You can have skills but no strategies or strategies but no skills and falter either way; you need them both. And even though you learn them separately, they are all inter-related.

In this episode Dr B talks about:

Being willing to start where you are, without judgment Setting a goal with enough specifics so your intention is clearly defined Achieving a goal based on what you decide to do in the moment The Importance Of Celebrating Your WINS Free Live Masterclass, January 2020: "The #1 Way to Move Beyond the Years of Damage from Undiagnosed ADHD and Executive Function Dysfunction." Brene Brown said, “Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you’re enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect. When we don’t have that, we shape-shift and turn into chameleons; we hustle for the worthiness we already possess.”

So, the question I have for you at this point of our journey together is - How great is your level of self-acceptance? • Hey ADDers! We’re going to start off a little different today and look at a correlation I’ve been thinking about for some time.

The title of today’s episode comes from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, and pertains to more than just those in recovery from alcoholism. And even if you don’t favor AA for whatever reasons, please do listen for the deeper logic and meanings that I want to share with you today in this introductory part of today’s episode.

A seemingly hopeless state of mind and body is reaching epidemic proportions as it relates to depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic illness, ADHD and addictions (both behavioral and substance). And underlying these conditions, I am seeing the compromised development of executive function skills and strategies, which are the essential skills we all need to thrive as adults in today’s world. If you can’t plan, organize, prioritize, get started and keep going until the end, or regulate states of overwhelm and analysis paralysis so you can make a solid decision, it’s going to cost you.

In this episode Dr B talks about:

  • Hey ADDers! Do you feel as if you’re on a runaway train? Is valuable time – and your life – passing you by in the blink of an eye? Do you feel lost or overwhelmed because you’re not getting the important things done in your life?

I was once there, too. I spent thousands of dollars on programs, therapists and books that promised to show me the way out of the chaos in spite of my ADHD brain. But they didn’t. Instead, they left me feeling angry and more desperate than before. Perhaps this is your story too.

Living Beyond ADHD, a podcast hosted and produced by Dr B, explores why so many adults with ADHD or Executive Function challenges never get past their challenges and live beyond them. That’s what Dr B's work in the world is really about, and she so wants that for you, if you want that too. You’ve heard her say many times that you are more than your ADHD; that you are a precious “human being” – even if the “human doing” part of you needs some work and tools. • Hey ADDers! Foresight is the secret ingredient to success, because without foresight you cannot prepare for the future. With our fast-paced lives, it is becoming harder and harder to establish foresight because our world is changing faster than ever before. Are you someone who has no idea of what sort of world you should prepare for? And if that is you, have you given up and decided that you can’t know or do anything about your future? That you will just have to deal with the cards that get dealt to you over time? That’s you being “reactive” rather than “responsive” to the circumstances of your life.

  • Hey ADDers! Do you have trouble “shifting” from your current task to the next task? Or maybe you have the opposite problem – where you are shifting way too quickly from thing to thing and leaving a trail of unfinished tasks in your wake. Even though most of the executive function assessments typically look at the behavioral stuff, like moving with ease from one situation, activity or aspect of a problem to another as the circumstances require, to me there is so much more to understanding Shifting than just the behavioral manifestations. What about Shifting your thoughts and feelings? By that I mean, do your thoughts and feelings seem to get stuck and just keep presenting you with the same stuff over and over again? Do you want to think or feel differently yet can’t seem to shift?

Albert Camus said, “There is no happiness if the things we believe in are different than the things we do.” So, the question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “Are you spending your precious irreplaceable time being and doing what you believe in? I hope you are taking steps every day towards your heart’s desire. And, if you need some support or skills or strategies to reach your goal, be sure to reach out and let’s chat.

  • Hey ADDers! If you’re married, living together, dating, have close friends or it’s you and you…these are all different forms of relationships that you are in. And where there are relationships, there are potential challenges and delightful times to be shared.

I look at relationships as kind of a progression. First, there is the relationship you have with yourself. Then there is the relationship you have with one other person, whether that’s a friendship or coupleship or partnership in business. From there, your coupleship or partnership could expand into a family or expansion of a business. Point is, in my mind it always starts with you.

Living Beyond ADHD, a podcast hosted and produced by Dr B, explores why so many adults with ADHD or Executive Function challenges never get past their challenges and live beyond them. That’s what Dr B's work in the world is really about, and she so want that for you, if you want that too. You’ve heard her say many times that you are more than your ADHD; that you are a precious “human being” – even if the “human doing” part of you needs some work and tools. By identifying the root cause issues, and addressing them, whether that means learning skills, strategies or facing and resolving long-standing problems, you can look to a future where you too are Living Beyond ADHD.

  • Hey ADDers! Do you have trouble “inhibiting” your impulses? Even though most of the executive function assessments typically look at the behavioral stuff, like blurting out, touching things you shouldn’t, cutting people off and more, to me there is so much more to understanding Inhibiting than just the behavioral manifestations. What about Inhibiting your thoughts and feelings? By that I mean, do your thoughts and feelings seem to have a mind of their own and “just happen” uninhibited, or do you have a say so in what you think and feel and when you think and feel what you do? I’m talking about the part of your mind that controls the censoring and regulating aspect of your behaviors, thoughts and feelings.

So, do you see upcoming, potential disasters ahead of time, like you going over the cliff BEFORE you get anywhere near it? Are you able to avert something negative BEFORE it happens because you remember what happened the last time? Are you living a life that is less adrenaline driven because you’ve learned some important things about yourself? For many of you the answer is no to most of these questions. It’s like your mind doesn’t yet know how to see into the future or benefit from the past. This might be one of the reasons you get into the same trouble over and over again.

  • Hey ADDers! Do you ever wonder about the heritability of ADHD or how your emotions and feelings impact your executive functioning? In fact, do you know the difference between your emotions and your feelings? If yes and no, this episode is for you!!

According to Pema Chodron, an American Tibetan Buddhist and ordained nun, if you allow an emotion to exist for 90 seconds without judging it, it will disappear. According to Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist and author of A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, “once triggered, the chemical released by your brain surges through your body and you have a physiological experience. Within 90 seconds from the initial trigger, the chemical component of anger has completely dissipated from your blood and your automatic response is over. If, however, you remain angry after those 90 seconds have passed, then it is because you have chosen to let that circuit continue to run.”

You will find the link in the PDF transcript as well as in the episode description. I hope you will take action and claim your gift of the Magical Power of WINS. It will be available as a free gift until my next Ask Dr B episode releases on Thursday, 10/19/17.

Second, I am seriously considering re-branding the name of my show because I don’t feel like I am talking about you harnessing your ADHD power, rather I am talking about topics that are beyond your ADHD, such as executive function skills, self-sabotaging behaviors, and how change can actually happen for you. So, the new name I am considering for my show is “Beyond Your ADHD with Dr B.” I’d love to know your thoughts on the idea of my re-branding my show and the name I am considering, for the reasons I am considering it. I’ve re-purposed the Waitlist, so that as soon as you get yourself on the Waitlist, I’ll be reaching out to you to find out what your current challenges are and what your goals are, so we can determine if this program is right for you. And if it is, I will offer you the opportunity to enroll in the program right now, at the current pricing, instead of waiting until the public re-launch of this program near the end of this year, which will include a price increase due to the new content about executive function and EF skills that is formally being added to the program. All the current Workshops and Coaching Calls have these EF skills woven into them so current members don’t have to wait to benefit from these life-changing skills. So, two benefits to enrolling now is that 1) you don’t have to wait to start learning the EF skills you are missing and can start improving the quality of your life, 2) you can freeze your membership costs at the lowest they will be. This program is definitely the place to be if you want help understanding what’s been holding you back and want to learn the skills to break free of your stuckness and start living the life you’ve only wished for. Click HERE to get on the Waitlist and have me contact you right away! In the words of a current student of mine: “Tuesday was World Mental Health Day and October is Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and ADHD Awareness Month. Couldn’t help but take a moment to reflect back to a year ago at this time, when I first started this journey. Crazy to me to review what I had written in the intro I posted here – never could I have imagined what the following months would bring… Truly grateful for the opportunity to finally learn and understand the reasons behind the challenges I’ve experienced throughout my life. Prior to last year, I never would have thought to attribute these challenges to ADHD/EFD. I feel like I’m finally coming into consciousness and into my own with all that we’ve been learning here.” In my own words: “It’s a safe space to face yourself and your current challenges and limitations, and tell the truth about what you really want to be doing in your life. That way, I can help you to learn the skills you are missing so you can do whatever it is that makes your heart sing and become the person who can have that life.” Fourth, there’s one more special thing I want to share with you and that’s connected with it being ADHD Awareness Month. I’m excited that this year’s International Conference on ADHD is being co-hosted by ADDA and CHADD, for the first time in history. Instead of having to decide between attending the ADDA or CHADD conference, that decision has been removed. You can attend this one conference and benefit from what both organizations have been providing to the ADHD communities for years. So, if you are in the Atlanta GA area or able to get there, the conference is going to be held from November 9-12, and will bring together some of the top clinicians, educators and resources all in one place for you. Anonymous said, “Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “Is it time for you to start releasing the false stories about yourself and so you can become the person you were meant to be in the first place?”
