  • In this week's episode of the podcast, I ask the question, are you addicted to stress? When you think of addiction, chances are you think of smoking, alcohol, or hard drugs, right? But not many people think of stress as being addictive. But what we discuss in this week's episode of the podcast is that stress can be just as addictive as smoking or alcohol! Many business owners and entrepreneurs are unknowingly addicted to stress and for many, this addiction (like other addictions) is slowly destroying their health, their relationships, their mental well-being, and even their business. But the problem is that many people who are addicted to stress and stuck in this stress cycle don’t actually know they are addicted. This is such a rarely discussed topic. So in this episode, we cover the science of HOW stress is just as addictive as smoking, plus the telltale signs of stress addiction. My intention is to help you (and your loved ones) see how they too could be addicted to stress and how you can start to break the stress cycle.     This is a very special episode of the podcast that I am excited to share with you! In today’s episode, I interview Mark Wolynn. 

    Mark Wolynn is the director of the Family Constellation Institute in San Francisco and is a leading expert in the field of inherited family trauma. His book "It Didn't Start With You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle" (Viking/Penguin) is the winner of the 2016 Silver Nautilus Book Award in psychology, and has been translated into 22 languages. His articles have appeared in Psychology Today, Mind Body Green, MariaShriver.com, Elephant Journal, and Psych Central, and his poetry has been published in The New Yorker.

    In this episode, Mark and I discuss how the brain changes in response to stress and trauma and how this stress response can be passed down from one generation to the next.

    In today's episode, I share with you the #1 perspective shift that is required to start healing not only PHYSICALLY but SPIRITUALLY.

    You see, most people believe that the symptoms that they have are a problem. Something that needs to be fixed at all costs! And yes, symptoms are annoying but operating from this place keeps people stuck in what I call the symptom spiral.

Brittany considered herself a "Spoonie", now if you don't know what that means it is a term to describe people who only have so much energy to use through the day. They only have so many 'spoons' at the start of the day, and every activity gives spoons away.

    When I met Brittany she was doing it all, spending thousands of dollars on treatments, lab reports, doctors appointments, you name it! But unfortunately for Brittany (and many others),  she was not getting the results she knew were possible. She was not getting the answers she was hoping for.

    Healing became her full-time job, now I am sure you might be able to resonate with that.

    At the same time, Brittany was avoiding doing the 'Inner Work', avoiding dealing with the stress in her life. In fact, she later realized that doing all the healing work, all the doctors, all the appointments, was a way to DISTRACT herself from dealing with the root issue.

    Once she started to deal with what was going on inside her, everything started to shift. She previously had the belief that her body was broken, and that there was something wrong with her. This all began to fade away.

    Sure doing the 'Inner Work' can be messy and uncomfortable, but it is always worth it.

  • Hey Mind Body Masters,

    Have you heard the tale of the straw that broke the camel's back? How the camel can carry 1 straw with ease, barely even noticing the weight, but over time, with each addition of a tiny straw the sheer number of these straws add up and cause the camel to collapse under the weight.

    Well, this is very similar to how stress impacts your BODY and MIND. So often when I tell people that most chronic conditions are caused by stress imprints they immediately assume that someone must go through incredible emotional trauma to have it show up in the body, but this is simply not always the case.

    For most people, it is the small stressors that build up over time that eventually become a problem.  There is a point where the body can handle the stress, and then all of a sudden it becomes too much, you cross the stress threshold.

    Once you cross the stress threshold, you start to experience all kinds of weird unexplained symptoms that won't shift under conventional therapies, plus, you begin to experience the undercurrent of anxiety, fear, self-doubt, and frustration that many live with.

    Learning about your stress threshold is one of the most important things you can do to start healing from the inside out!! This episode is going to be very familiar to you but also very enlightening.

  • Recently, I had a conversation with a friend. He asked me for my opinion on a pain he was experiencing, from what he describe it sounded EXACTLY like a pain that was caused by stress or old emotional baggage.

    He said: "My pain isn't emotional, it is physical."

    This is a belief that keeps so many people stuck in their pain, and in this episode, I am going to share with you a checklist so you can determine if your pain has a physical cause or it has an emotional cause.

    There are 7 key points that differentiate between a physical cause and an emotional cause.
    1. The injury is taking longer to heal than expected
    2. NOTHING has helped, or you need regular treatment to keep the pain at bay
    4. Your pain regularly flares up in a similar pattern
    4. You experience more pain in the morning, evening, or when you are relaxed.
    5. After stressful events/times you get more symptoms
    6. You devalue yourself and are very hard on yourself.
    7. Doctors and other healthcare experts are confused as to why you are still in pain.

    If you answered YES to 1 or more of these questions, it is almost certain that your pain has a mental/emotional cause.

    I am here to tell you, that the healthcare system is so OUTDATED and broken when it comes to helping people in pain. Sure it is fantastic for Trauma stuff, but when it comes to chronic conditions it is missing the mark. And the reason it is missing the mark is because emotional baggage and stress is completely ignored.

    So unless you are dealing with the root emotional cause of your pain, nothing will change which is why so many people stay stuck in pain.

  • Have you ever thought that your body was broken? Letting you down? Or do you regularly think that there is something 'WRONG' with you?

    This belief is very common, that if you have a symptom it means there is something WRONG with your body. But this could not be further from the truth, in fact, this very belief is the thing that keeps many people stuck and sick. 

    By understanding how your mind body connection works and understanding that your symptoms are meaningful, you can start to let this old broken belief go. And when you are able to release this belief and see your body and mind in a new light, you can start to heal both physical and emotionally.

    What if I told you that healing yourself is the easiest thing in the world...

    Would you believe me? Or think I have gone crazy?

    I wouldn't be offended if you thought I had gone crazy because most people on earth think that healing is a struggle.

    You need to struggle and work hard in order to heal.

    Most people with any kind of chronic illness are out there fighting their body.

    Doing all the therapies, taking all the medications, all the supplements, normalizing all the hormone levels and lab results, perfecting the diet....

    Man, that is exhausting.

    But it does not have to be that way!

    Healing, and more specifically, healing YOURSELF can be absolutely EFFORTLESS when you know-how!

    Learning to work WITH your body instead of against it, is how you heal.

    There are 3 key points you need to consider to make this leap into the self healing world.
    1. Understand your physical symptoms are NOT physical, but EMOTIONAL.
    2. Learn the language of your body....
    3. Process the emotional cause, move on, and LET GO.

  • Yes you read that right...

    Burnout is not caused by doing too much, it is caused by being out of alignment.

    Today we are going to turn the traditional concept of burnout on its head. Most people think that the reason they are struggling with burnout and feeling mentally and physically exhausted is that they are overdoing it. Working too much, having too many demands in life.

    But that is not the case. Today we are going to discuss the REAL cause of being burnout, being out of alignment in life.

    Its not a matter of HOW much you are doing, it is a matter of WHAT you are doing.

    I am sure you have experienced a time in your life when you felt inspired and excited about what you were doing. You had boundless energy despite working long hours. But at the same time, you have done less inspiring work and it sapped all the energy out of you!

    Burnout is something that you can heal yourself. I share my story of how I experienced burnout and how it all shifted for me.

  • If you want to learn how to heal yourself, you need to learn how to LET GO.

    There are people out there that are struggling with some kind of chronic illness or pain, and they have tried everything. All the supplements, medications, treatments, diets, and protocols. Yet, despite DOING all the things, these people are still struggling. Why is that so?

    Well, you might know someone who is like this, or you might relate to it yourself. In today's episode you will discover what the missing link in heal t

    The current healthcare system is not working well for people with chronic illnesses and chronic pain. Don't get me wrong, it is fantastic for acute care! If I was hit by a bus, I would be at the ER and not meditating (well I would be doing both).

    But the reason the traditional way of healing is failing so many people is because it thinks that there is something wrong with your body.

    But what we know from the science of GNM is that the body doesn't make mistakes. Mother nature is intelligent. Your symptoms are meaningful, more than that they are trying to help you cope with the stress in your life, the unconscious emotional baggage you have been holding on to.

    When we recognize that stress and emotional conflicts are the real cause of physical symptoms in the body, healing becomes a matter of letting go.

    Letting go of the beliefs and stories we have about ourselves, letting go of the resentment we hold towards others, and letting go of the thoughts we have that hold us back.

    The key to having a healthy body is first having a healthy mind.

    Letting go of all the crap that is stored in our mind and body is the most effective way to start creating a healthy mind. Today's episode is going to talk about exactly this.

  • One of my favourite sayings is: "Life doesn't happen to you, it happens for you"

    I am sure a lot of the spiritually minded people tuning into the podcast can appreciate that statement, but why do we have a different approach when it comes to our physical symptoms?

    What do I mean?

    Well, we have all bought into a healthcare system that makes us think that when we have pain, fatigue, skin issues, or other physical symptoms, we have something wrong with our body!

    But what if nothing is wrong? What if your symptoms are meaningful and actually healing you deal with the stress in your life.

    This is the view of GNM, we see your symptoms not as a mistake made by your body but an intelligent adaptation made by mother nature to help you cope with changes in your environment.

    So the paradigm shift is 2 fold.

    First, we need to recognise that our symptoms are meaningful. They don't happen to us, they happen for us!

    Secondly, it serves us well to ask the question..."What is this trying to teach me?"

    When you have some kind of symptom, say a knee pain or a back pain that comes along twice a year, ask "What is this trying to teach me?"

    Using GNM as the roadmap between your mind and body, you are able to pin point what your symptoms are trying to tell you. When you do this, you can start healing on the inside.

    Start letting go of the emotional pain of the past, letting go of the stress in your life.

    When this happens, you not only heal physically, you start to heal spiritually as well.

    This is why your symptoms are a blessing not a curse. Because they help you release and let go of patterns in your mind that are no longer serving you!

    After a brief break from the podcasting world, we are back!! I was busy putting together the program for the first-ever Mind Body Masters Program. A group program teaching people how to heal themselves. During this program, one topic became obvious, that all the Founding Members had a difficult time letting themselves experience emotions.

    In this episode, I talk about what we discovered and how you need to FEEL in order to HEAL.

    Many people learn as children that some emotions are ok to feel and some emotions are bad.  These bad emotions we will experience a whole heap of resistance to feeling them. So we develop ways to distract or suppress these feelings. What we discuss in this episode is those feelings don't go away just because you have suppressed them. You are going to learn how I have used this process to feel to heal.

    I give you some great journal prompts that you can use:
    1. What emotions do not feel safe for me to feel?
    2. How exactly do I distract or suppress my emotions.

  • Your mind is incredibly powerful. If you believe a treatment or drug is going to be beneficial for you, IT WILL BE. This is the placebo effect, most people have heard about this at some point or another.

    But it you are like most people, you probably have not heard much about the evil cousin of the placebo effect, the nocebo effect.

    This is when a harmless substance, or harmless treatment causes harm because you believe it will be harmful.

    You mind is powerful.

    A lot of people I work with are under the nocebo effect. They have certain beliefs around their body and their ability to heal which in turn causes their healing to be delayed. 

    In this episode you will learn exactly what the nocebo effect is, how it is likely making you sick or delaying healing, and you will learn exactly what to do to reduce its effect. 

    I also discuss something called Mass Psychogenic Illness. An interesting phenomenon whereby when people *think* they are going to get sick, the stress and anxiety can make them experience the physical symptoms. This is something interesting especially with the influence of the media around the current health situation. 

    I give some tips that I have used, to reduce the stress and anxiety around getting sick that can really help you.

  • If you are someone who struggles with Acne, this episode is going to give a whole new perspective on what causes acne as well as some practical tips to heal from the inside out.

    For most acne sufferers they have tried all kinds of ointments and medications to help them heal, but nothing has lasted for long. It is because these methods do not focus on the mind, emotions, stress and the psyche. The mind is so crucial and often overlooked in healing.

    We will be looking at acne from the GNM perspective, looking at the specific biological conflicts which create the changes in the skin we call acne or pimples.

    For many people they get stuck in a vicious feedback loop where their self talk creates further bouts of acne. When you are able to become conscious of this unconscious pattern, you have the are able to dissolve the pattern and really heal from the inside out.

    In this episode I mention a book on self talk which is titled What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter. This was a great book that I read which help show me exactly where myself talk was affecting me. This is a big piece of the puzzle for people with acne. 

    I am sure you will find the mind body perspective, the GNM perspective of acne useful and I know when you can interrupt the pattern I discuss in the episode your acne will become a thing of the past.
