  • True or false: Positive feelings towards aging can increase your life by up to 8 years longer. Our guest from Wyoming is practically shouting from the rooftops, "IT'S TRUE!". If you blame things on your age and feel diminished in your daily living, it can literally shorten your life. The secret to embracing getting older? Surrounding yourself with solid relationships, practicing gratitude, and admiring the modern miracles of life.

Deborah Healy Hammons, Consultant, Creative Writer, former PBS TV Producer, and former Minority Whip for the Wyoming House of Representatives, has a knack for seeing beauty all around her, even in mundane tasks. In our conversation, Deborah likened driving in rush-hour traffic to seeing a flock of birds communicating in sync. We may all have our own responsibilities and meetings to attend, we’re all genuinely heading in the same direction, same flow of traffic.

She even shares her love for having a real, live person helping her check out at the grocery store over scanning at the self-checkout line because it allows her to bond with the person standing before her. When people generally try to avoid such arduous tasks, Deborah fully embraces them.

When it comes to living happier, more fulfilling lives, Deborah shares that appreciating the world's beauty allows us to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace the joy of living in the moment. And while we can't stop the world from turning and stop ourselves from getting older, we can simply age gracefully.

  • Honoring people with love and respect has always been one of Julie DeNofa’s greatest strengths. Serving as the President and original partner in the creation of Positive Recovery Centers and the Co-Host of Positive Recovery MD, it’s evident that Julie has always been passionate about seeing others thrive in recovery. With over 25 years of experience helping families recover from substance use disorder, it’s no secret that Julie truly has a heart for people.

By simply honoring them at that moment and unconventionally showcasing love, Julie was able to help her loved one find peace and healing. It’s no secret that Julie has an entirely selfless and giving heart, even if it means putting her own struggles aside. She truly exemplifies what it means to nurture others.

And while many joys come from helping others, Julie will tell you that her greatest joys in life, above all else, are her three children.

  • A common misconception about recovery and living life sober is that you can’t have any fun without substance use, especially during the Holiday season. But that certainly couldn’t be further from the truth! We’d argue that the holidays are even more fun sober. You can wake up feeling guilt-free, cherish the memories from the night before, and there’s no dreaded hangover.

Looking to ring in the New Year and begin 2023 on the right foot? Then you’re in for a real treat as our guests, Sarah Bolton and Bree Brown, Co-Founders of Sober Eve, Houston’s ONLY Soper Pop-Up Night Club, share with us how to embrace New Year’s Eve without the temptation of champagne being passed to you at midnight.

Bree Brown, Co-Founder of Sober Eve, has worked in the behavioral health industry since 2015. Her passion for the work has only multiplied over the years. Beginning in mental health primary treatment, she has now focused on Co-occurring treatment and helping connect communities to much-needed resources.

You may remember Sarah Bolton on Episode 25, where she talked about How to Master the Gift of Giving. Sarah sits on the Board of Directors for the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and is also the chair of the Spectrum Conference. Sarah has worked in business development for both local and national treatment centers and has also facilitated Mindful Art Programs for residential treatment centers. Now, she’s back to share the incredible work she and Bree are doing with Sober Eve. Be sure to reserve your spot on New Year’s Eve. We can’t wait to see you there!

  • This week, we are talking with Randy Grimes, Baylor University Graduate and an award-winning 10-year veteran of the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spending nearly 20+ years battling an addiction to painkillers developed while treating career-

related injuries, Randy now uses his inspiring story of recovery and his 10+ years in the addictions industry. As an Interventionist and founding advocate at Athletes In Recovery, Randy helps victims recover from drug and alcohol abuse.

One of Randy’s leading reasons for helping athletes recover from their substance use is due to the gripping reality of inauthenticity with injuries on the playing field. As we discuss what it’s like to suffer in silence, we find that there is a huge stigma attached to athletes and how they deal with their pain. Whether it’s a physical injury or mental health, athletes are often led to put on a fake face for their fans.

Randy shares how easy it is to hide the pain on and off the field and what it’s like to feel alone in your addiction. As Randy shares his personal story with humility and honesty, he transforms the narrative to focus on prevention, intervention, and treatment for substance use disorders and other health challenges. Join us as we dive into what led to Randy’s ultimate recovery and his heart behind helping others along the way.

    Topics Discussed:

Unhealthy stigmas behind professional athletes’ injuries Overwhelming emotions behind hiding your pain and struggle The harsh reality of hitting rock bottom and losing your identity Breaking the stigma behind asking for help Accepting people where they’re at

  • “Light is the symbol of truth.” – James Russell Lowell

Although our past may include days of darkness, when we shed light on our past mistakes, we illuminate our future. By acknowledging our past, taking ownership of our mistakes, and bringing light to the darkness, we are able to pave the way for others to do the same. Kendal is also in recovery from heroin and is celebrating one year sober as of February 23rd, 2021.

During their conversation, Kendal shares the power of taking ownership of our past mistakes and why actions speak louder than our words alone. Kendal also shares the importance of paving the way for women in recovery and what it means to instill truth and light into her children’s lives.

  • This week, Dr. Jason Powers and Julie DeNofa are joined by Joseph Gorordo. Joseph is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor who has been in substance abuse treatment since 2009. In long-term recovery since 2008, Joseph is also the Vice President of Business Development for Recovery Unplugged, Former President of the Austin Chapter of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, and current President-Elect for that same organization.

In 2019, Joseph was awarded the Terry D. Hale Professional of the Year award and has built and developed various programs, including Residential Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programs, and Extended Care Programs. Joseph also co-hosts the Talksicology Podcast, a weekly live discussion on mental health, addiction, and recovery.

During their conversation, Joseph shares how he never felt like he fit in growing up, leading to experimenting with drugs and alcohol. However, drugs and alcohol quickly became his identity and consumed his life. After years of justifying his addiction, stealing money from his mom to pay for drugs, and trying to live up to the facade of living a rockstar movie lifestyle, Joseph knew he needed to make a change.

In long-term recovery, Joseph now creates opportunities for others to find their way back. He recognizes how helpless many families feel when witnessing their loved ones struggling with addiction and provides resources to help them on their road to recovery. Joseph says the greatest thing recovery ever gave him was a loving family. By assisting individuals with their addictions, he can extend that same love and gratitude.

    Topics Discussed:

Great lengths families often go to help loved ones facing addiction Why a strong community is essential to our recovery journey Learning to forgive others by learning to forgive yourself Why living a double life catches up with us when battling addiction The greatest gift recovery can give us
