  • Have you ever heard about Guanidinoacetic Acid (GAA) and its benefits to swine performance? As an essential precursor in creatine synthesis, GAA contributes to the development of muscles, the metabolism of energy, and the maintenance of amino acid metabolism. With that in mind, understanding the strategic use of GAA in swine feeding is critical to optimize feed efficiency, promote healthy weight gain, and ensure high-quality pork products. To discuss that, I have a conversation with Dr. Balachandar Jayaraman, who has conducted research in that field. In this episode, he talks about the dynamics of GAA and how its addition to animal nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting swine performance.

โ€œGAA has improved not only growth performance, but also carcass quality โ€“ especially lean meat. It has also reduced backfat thickness.โ€ - Dr. Balachandar Jayaraman

  • Over the last decades, research has shown that selenium plays a critical role in the organism of pigs, especially when the animals are facing stressful events such as weaning, farrowing, and heat stress. However, there are still some misunderstandings about the benefits of selenium and its proper usage, since high levels of the substance in diets can lead to toxicity. In this episode, I have a great conversation with Dr. Darlene Bloxham, a specialist on the subject. She digs into the main questions that arise when it comes to selenium supplementation, including the main differences between selenium sources, the limitations levels, and the ways to supplement it in different production phases, among others.

"Selenium is more effective when supplemented before stress. When you supplement it during stress, it does not accumulate in tissues as rapidly as it could otherwise." - Dr. Darlene Bloxham

  • You probably already know that we are facing a global banking crisis, as it has been widely reported all over the news. However, this is not a recent problem โ€“ as a matter of fact, the current situation began in 2008 and has been dragging on since then. The downturn of that period was never fully overcome and the effects of its temporary solutions have now become one of the primary reasons for the financial instability. As important as that may be, can you tell how exactly it affects pork producers and the swine industry? That is the central question I ask two specialists in this episode: Richard Brock and Dr. Glynn Tonsor. It's your time to stay up to date on the consequences of the crisis for our sector and learn tips to overcome these challenging times.

"We're now facing an environment which we hadn't seen since 2008 and seeing a lot of people make management decisions. So there's not a lot of history there to draw from as to how people will act and react to these types of adverse market conditions." - Richard Brock

  • Making a career choice can be challenging, especially when we are still young and inexperienced. When we bring that discussion into the swine industry in particular, we realize that not many students know all the possibilities on the table beyond becoming veterinarians. Besides, not all of them come from an ag background. With that in mind, we must do our best to introduce them to our reality โ€“ and thatโ€™s what we talk about in this episode with Dr. Cassie Jones. At K-State, Dr. Jones coordinates the Departmentโ€™s undergraduate teaching program, which has more than 900 students and generates more than 30,000 academic credits annually. So she explains the differences between graduate degrees and the reason why mentorship is important in our field. She also gives some great insights for all those asking themselves: do I have what it takes to get a swine nutrition graduate degree?

  • A lot has been going on in the US soy market nowadays: a major expansion in the soybean crushing industry, which is mainly driven by the current and potential demand for renewable diesel. That scenario implies some uncertainties for the soybean market in the upcoming years, as we see a critical shift in the industry from "crushing for meal" to "crushing for oil." Thus, what should swine producers and nutritionists know about the soybean crushing industry? To answer that question (and many others), I have a great conversation with Mac Marshall and Dr. Keenan McRoberts in todayโ€™s episode, both from the United Soybean Board. We discuss the challenges and opportunities of the topic and the way it can impact the animal market.

"Overall, we're still in a strong demand environment for the soy complex โ€“ I see some exciting challenges over the next couple years, particularly on the meal fraction." - Mac Marshall

  • Everyone in the swine industry is ethically responsible for protecting our animals as well as promoting their welfare, safeguarding natural resources, and producing safe food. Once we do that, we keep building and improving our customer relationships, because we receive their trust. That's why internal and third-party audits and certification programs are so essential โ€“ and to answer many of the questions on pork producers' and managers' minds when it comes to the matter, I talk with Emily Erickson. Ms. Erickson has vast knowledge and experience in that area and in this episode, she explains what the different types of audits are, what an animal welfare audit looks like, and how auditors are trained.

"Do your best with the audits, try to become more familiar with the process, and understand why they are important โ€“ it's not someone coming into your farm just to make your day terrible." - Emily Erickson

  • While temperatures are dropping, concerns are being raised for many swine producers. We are talking about Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), one of the biggest challenges for swine health because of its tremendous worldwide economic impact on pig production. In that scenario, we must keep an eye on the way PRRS viruses evolve year after year. So you might ask yourself: "What have we learned from PRRS outbreaks this year?" The good news is that I myself asked that same question to one of the brilliant minds in our industry: Dr. Paul Yeske. In this episode, Dr. Yeske delves into the latest trends on PRRS and the strategies we can count on to prevent and mitigate the impact on our herds.

"We often think about how we can keep PRRS out of our farms. However, once we have it, we must also think about how we can do our best to avoid carrying it elsewhere and keep it within the herd." - Dr. Paul Yeske

  • Influenza viruses are a huge concern for swine producers around the globe: firstly, because they cause high levels of illness in the herds; secondly, because they are very contagious and evolve very quickly. Although swine (and human) influenza viruses can circulate throughout the entire year, most outbreaks do occur during late fall and winter โ€“ so there is no better time to talk about them! In this week's episode, I talk with Dr. Montserrat Torremorell about the main strategies for solving influenza issues in our pig production systems. With vast experience on that topic, Dr. Montserrat explains what the differences are between influenza viruses, why sow farms are more susceptible to occurrences, and what we need to do to successfully control influenza on a practical level.

  • There is a lot we need to consider when managing nursery pigs. Swine producers, nutritionists, vets, and everyone else involved in the process must do their best to protect the pigs from stressors after weaning while raising robust and healthy animals. However, it is common knowledge that there is not a single answer or a silver bullet to solve all the issues in nursery production, since every system is different and demands adaptable solutions. In this week's episode, I talk with Dr. Wes Schweer, who has a very extensive research and practical experience in dealing with the challenges in the nursery. As part of our discussion, we go through the main current trends in the nursery phase and what we are โ€“ or should be โ€“ doing differently from the past.

  • It is common knowledge that any biosecurity program must be well designed to both minimize the impact of endemic pathogens to which the herds have been exposed and fend off pathogens to which they have not come into contact yet. But even though we recognize the importance of biosecurity processes, we sometimes forget that they must change from season to season: the cold months bring different disease and management challenges when compared with the hot months. Considering how critical such a topic is, I talk with Dr. Daniel Boykin about how swine producers can enforce their biosecurity programs, especially during winter. According to him, everything goes back to consistency: we must have a consistent approach to biosecurity that can be replicated as many times as necessary.

"If we have developed a process that reduces disease introduction in sow farms, why can't we apply those concepts directly to wean-to-market farms?" - Dr. Daniel Boykin
