  • That's my first episode as one of the hosts for The Swine It Podcast Show, and to celebrate that, I had an exciting talk with Dr Alexa Lamm. Dr. Lamm shares her insights on how she helps address public concerns related to food production and environmental issues. Much of today's episode will delve into the workings and mission of the Real Pork Trust Consortium, which has emerged as a catalyst in bridging the gap between the public and the pork industry. As part of a robust research and training component, different institutions work hand in hand to ensure that accurate and comprehensive information circulates among consumers.

โ€œWe have to always be thinking about who's our consumer market. Find out who they are, where they are, what message they want things framed in and then create that message to tailor to them." - Dr. Alexa Lamm

  • Swine feed formulations are often optimized to contain the right balance of corn, soybean meal, and supplements in order to meet the animals' nutritional needs at the lowest cost. It may be possible to find even greater opportunities by incorporating alternative feedstuffs beyond these traditional ingredients. Casey Shaw, an expert in swine nutrition and formulation, discusses how feed utilizes more byproducts and alternative ingredients as it has evolved rapidly. He shares insights on how the supply chain adaptation and opportunistic mindset enabled major changes in feed formulations and emerging ingredient trends.

โ€œBut the short story is, when I started there, they had a system fed about 2% alternative ingredients. And when I left, it wasn't unusual to see a diet of 40% alternative ingredients, which is a lot of difference." - Casey Shaw

  • Welcome to our 200th episode!! Time flies, right? To celebrate this history, we have invited Dr. Trey Kellner as our guest to share his experiences and answer questions about the daily routine of a swine nutritionist. As we all well know, swine nutritionists have an important role to play and contribute a lot to our industry by optimizing pig diets, improving feed efficiency, and enhancing pork production quality. They are also key to advancing our sustainability strategies by reducing feed waste and addressing environmental challenges. So, as a swine nutritionist himself, Dr. Kellner sheds light on the routine, time management, and client interactions of a swine nutritionist โ€“ and gives some insights and tips as well -, and why providing effective feedback is something we must all do.

โ€œThe ability of swine nutritionists to predict performance plays a vital role in a production team: it enables effective financial management by optimizing feed costs, the largest source of expenses on our operations.โ€ - Dr. Trey Kellner
