  • This time on The Children's Hour, we take a dive into the very basics of Civics education with lifelong educator and community leader Arthur Lieber. We explore how kids can help bring our country together, and build a brighter future. Then we hear from our friends at the Extinction Diaries about marine plankton, a tiny ocean critter upon whom life on Earth depends. Mixed with excellent music. Learn with us!

  • This time on The Children's Hour we head under the sea, to the Albuquerque Aquarium. Our program was recorded before a live audience in 2019 and features three of the aquarists. One swims with the sharks, another grows coral, and the third is the keeper of the aquarium's otters. We also hear a Nigerian folktale told by storyteller Ramona King. Mixed with great music, and featuring our Kids Crew & Katie.

  • We're getting inspired by the two time Grammy nominated Alphabet Rockers founders, Kaitlyn McGaw and Tommy Shepherd. Plus we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about how sharks are used in cosmetics and other products. This show has excellent music, and will inspire kids of all ages to become change makers.

Alphabet Rockers make music that makes change. Known as the preeminent children’s hip hop artists to focus on social change and racial justice, they are consciousness in motion. They spark an intergenerational conversation about the world through music and dance. Partnering with thought leaders on anti-bias and child development, they create empowered, engaging concerts and activities for young children, families, and educators.

The Alphabet Rockers have developed an anti-racism mini-training for kids, families and teachers called We Got Work To Do.  Learn about bias, oppression, and where kids have power to stand up to hate, and make change.

  • This episode of The Children's Hour is going to stink, as we learn all about skunks with the founder and director of The Dragoo Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations, Dr. Jerry Dragoo. We'll find out where skunks are found, why they smell, and how to avoid getting sprayed. Dr. Dragoo is a world renowned mephitologist, or biologist who studies skunks.

Plus Kids Crewmember, Evan Daitz has a review of the trilogy A Boy Called Bat, in which Dr. Dragoo is a character.  And the kids in the Extinction Diaries cover a giant spider that was thought to be extinct, but has been rediscovered.

Learn more about skunks at the Dragoo Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations.

Here is a range map of where skunks live.

Skunk ancestors go back nearly 40 million years and used to live in Europe. This skull was found in Spain and dates back 10 million years.

  • This week on The Children's Hour we have an interview with Ziggy Marley, a book review and we learn about a rediscovered chameleon that was thought to be extinct.

  • This week on The Children's Hour, we explore the genre of science fiction with our musical friends from Ramah, New Mexico, MeriDean. This type of storytelling allows our imagination to become immersed in other worldly places, with advanced technologies, on exoplanets, or flying through space, and using actual science to help us believe the impossible. With excerpts of famous works of "Sci-Fi" like The War of the Worlds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Slaughterhouse Five, and original pieces recorded by masterful storytellers, we immerse ourselves in futuristic fantasy.

Plus the kids in the Extinction Diaries update us about the Sumatran Tiger, and how our use of palm oil is hurting their chance for survival.

All of this is mixed with great music by Tim and the Space Cadets, Brave Combo, Joanie Leeds And The Nightlights, The Okee Dokee Brothers, They Might Be Giants, Dino O'Dell, Justin Roberts, The Mosaic Project, Eric Herman, and others.

Here are our Kids Crew and listener Science Fiction book suggestions for kids:

  • On this episode of The Children's Hour, we explore balloons! We learn what makes the drifting hot air balloons stay afloat in the sky, and we learn the history of how balloons came to be a mode of transportation. We also hear the Balloonist's Prayer, and we take a trip in a hot air balloon with one of our Kids Crew members. Plus, we visit with the artists behind Airigami, who make giant sculptures and even clothing out of latex balloons. The kids in the Extinction Diaries talk about what happens when people release helium balloons into nature. Finally we find out about those mysterious white balloons that appear all over the world every single day, high in the sky.

All of this is mixed with great music from Steve Pullara, They Might Be Giants, Roger Day, Tom Paxton, Bill Oliver, Frances England, Elena Moon Park and Poi Dog Pondering.

  • This episode of The Children's Hour focuses on pollution, which is a problem around the globe, but there are ways to un-pollute dirty and contaminated places. How we do that is explained by chemist and journalist Dr. Marina Philip, and we check in with mycologist Peter McCoy from the world's first school for mycology, Mycologos about how mushrooms can transform some of our most toxic pollutants into building materials and more. We also hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about the problem of plastic pollution worldwide. Kids can help solve this international crisis and we learn how. This show is mixed with great music from the Beat Buds, Zee Avi, Mister G, One More Song, Ellis Paul, Earthworm Ensemble and more.

Dr. Marina Philip's article about cleaning Las Vegas Nevada's drinking water is here!
