Dr. James Pennebaker is the Regents Centennial Professor of Liberal Arts and Professor of Psychology. He and his students are exploring natural language use, group dynamics, and personality in both laboratory and real-world settings. His earlier work on expressive writing found that physical health and work performance can improve by simple writing and/or talking exercises. His cross-disciplinary research is related to linguistics, clinical and cognitive psychology, communications, medicine, and computer science. Author or editor of 12 books and over 300 articles, Pennebaker has received numerous research and teaching awards and honors.

In this episode, we talk about what we can learn about human psychology through written language. We first discuss the functions of language, and how it influences cognition. We get into written language, and the psychological benefits of writing, particularly expressive writing. We also talk about predicting relationship breakdowns through language use, personality traits, stories, and sex differences in language use.

We talk about the relationship between science and ethics. We then discuss several different questions in animal ethics, including what makes an animal worthy of moral consideration; animal rights, and legislation concerning animal wellbeing; the extinction of the animals from the meat industry; anti-natalism; how we should deal with carnivore species; cannibalism; and if it would be possible for all of us to become vegan.

Dr. Kyle Thomas recently received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Harvard University, where he developed his research program on the psychology of common knowledge under his advisor, Steven Pinker. He is currently the Chief Scientist at MotiveMetrics, where they turn cutting-edge psychological science into software tools that can accurately reveal true motivations from publicly available data. In short, they help marketers understand why people buy—or don’t—at the click of a button. Software hasn’t eaten marketing research yet, but they’re working very hard to change that.

In this episode, we talk about common knowledge. We start with some basic definitions of private knowledge, shared knowledge, and common knowledge. We then get into some examples of domains where common knowledge applies, like economic games, self-conscious emotions, charitable behavior, the bystander effect, and indirect speech.

Dr. Jeremy DeSilva is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Dartmouth College. He is the author of A Most Interesting Problem: What Darwin’s Descent of Man Got Right and Wrong about Human Evolution.

In this episode, we focus on A Most Interesting Problem, and Darwin’s Descend of Man. We first discuss the Descent of Man in its historical context, and compare it to the Origin of Species, and try to trace back the origins of some of its most prominent ideas. We talk about part 1 of the book, and the evolutionary origins of our mental faculties, and what Darwin had to say about race and sex differences. We get into Darwin’s insights on our African origins, and some of the most important ideas in the field of paleoanthropology. We explain why “race” is not a useful scientific concept, and why “cline” is a much better one to understand human biodiversity. We also talk about how revolutionary the idea of sexual selection was. Finally, we discuss why some of Darwin’s ideas were/are problematic, with a focus on a recent controversy involving Agustín Fuentes’ essay on Science, and we sum things up with what Darwin got right and wrong about human evolution.

Dr. David Pietraszewski is Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. He is an experimental psychologist who applies evolutionary theorizing to Social, Cognitive, and Developmental questions. He is particularly interested in characterizing the psychology of multi-agent conflict and cooperation ("coalitional psychology").

In this episode, we talk about modularity of mind and coalitional psychology. In terms of modularity of mind, we cover topics like: Fodorian modularity, modularity in evolutionary psychology, and different levels of analysis when thinking about modularity. Dr. Kim Hill is a professor in the Anthropology department at Arizona State University.

In this episode, we talk about hunter-gatherer tribes and human sociality. We walk through many of the societies Dr. Hill studied, including the Aché, the Hiwi, the Mashco-Piro, the Matsiguenga, the Yora, and the Sea Nomads, and aspects of their sociality. We get into like what anthropologists learn by studying traditional societies, how we can compare contemporary hunter-gatherers with the societies we evolved in, and human universals, and if societies have more similarities or differences. We ask if it is better to live in traditional or industrialized societies. We then go through several aspects of human sociality, including foraging, food sharing, life history and parental investment, human cooperation and cultural norms, fission-fusion phenomena, co-residence, marriage, inter-band interactions and cumulative culture, and wealth and economic inequality. Finally, we talk about why we should protect isolated tribes, and how to do it best.

Dr. Brian Leiter is Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago Law School and founder and Director of Chicago's Center for Law, Philosophy and Human Values. He is the author of books like Nietzsche on Morality, Naturalizing Jurisprudence, Why Tolerate Religion? and, more recently, Moral Psychology with Nietzsche.

In this episode, we talk about Moral Psychology with Nietzsche. First, Dr. Leiter tells us what got him interested in Nietzsche. We then ask if Nietzsche was a moral realist, and where he thought morality comes from. We discuss Nietzsche’s ideas about nature and nurture in moral psychology. We get into concepts like “drives”, “affect”, and the “Will”. We talk about the role of personality and individual differences in moral predispositions. We discuss to what extent consciousness has any sort of causal power over our behavior. We talk about Nietzsche’s “death of God” and atheism. We discuss if there is any space for moral revaluation in Nietzsche’s moral philosophy, and if “moral progress” would make sense for him. We talk about the main Nietzschean insights on moral psychology that got vindicated by modern scientific psychology. Finally, we discuss if Nietzsche was an Enlightenment thinker.

Dr. Andrew Guess is an assistant professor of politics and public affairs at Princeton University. His research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of political communication, public opinion, and political behavior. Via a combination of experimental methods, large datasets, machine learning, and innovative measurement, he studies how people choose, process, spread, and respond to information about politics. Recent work investigates the extent to which online Americans' news habits are polarized (the popular "echo chambers" hypothesis), patterns in the consumption and spread of online misinformation, and the effectiveness of efforts to counteract misperceptions encountered on social media.

In this episode, we talk about political polarization, misinformation, and digital media literacy. We start with online political polarization, and the phenomenon of eco chambers. We get into misinformation and fake news on digital media. We ask if political ads work, and if online surveys are reliable. Finally, we talk about some of the solutions to fight back against misinformation, including fact-checking and digital media literacy.

Dr. Edward Watts is presently the Vassiliadis Professor of Byzantine Greek History at UC San Diego. His research interests center on the intellectual and religious history of the Roman Empire and the early Byzantine Empire. His new book is The Eternal Decline and Fall of Rome: The History of a Dangerous Idea.

In this episode, we focus on The Eternal Decline and Fall of Rome. We walk through topics like: when did people start theorizing about the decline and fall of Rome; the actual factors that played a role in the fall of Rome; periods in Roman history where there was renewal without decline, and decline and false renewal; dynamics of conservatism, decline, renewal, and progress in the history of Rome; the role of Christianity in the later stages of the Western Roman Empire, and in the Byzantine Empire; Europe in the aftermath of the fall of Rome; the Holy Roman Empire; the “decline of the West”, if it is real, and how populists on the right and the left take advantage of narratives of “decline”. Finally, we discuss how we can prevent populist political movements from rising, and the ethical duty of historians.

Dr. Agustín Fuentes is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. He is the author of books like Race, Monogamy, and Other Lies They Told You: Busting Myths about Human Nature, and Why We Believe: Evolution and the Human Way of Being.

This interview is part of the series on the 150thanniversary of Darwin’s Descent of Man.

In this episode, we talk about biological anthropology, and Darwin’s Descent of Man. We get a bit into the field of Biological Anthropology, and talk about the kinds of questions it deals with. We talk about belief. We then get into some myths about human evolution, including race and sex differences, in the context of Darwin’s Descent of Man. We discuss monogamy and human mating systems. We talk about some issues with taking modern hunter-gatherers as representative of ancestral societies, and with some ideas in evolutionary psychology, like the concept of the environment of evolutionary adaptedness. Other topics include aggression as an illustrative example of how people theorize about sex differences; human nature; and the overall importance of Darwin’s theories.

Dr. Douglas P. Fry is Professor and Chair in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has written extensively on aggression, conflict, and conflict resolution in his own books and in journals such as Science and American Anthropologist. He’s the author or editor of books like The Human Potential for Peace; Beyond War; War, Peace, and Human Nature; and Nurturing Our Humanity.

This is our second interview on the anthropology of war. You can find the first one here: https://youtu.be/uz9xPBQ_CO0

In this episode, we expand on the topics I covered in our first interview, and talk about: how old is war; what drives war – factors like population density, sedentarism, and social complexity; how we can be sure that a death in the archaeological record was caused by war; peace social systems, and how they are maintained, both in traditional small-scale societies and industrialized societies; and how we can promote peace and international cooperation, and in dealing with threats like global pandemics and climate change. Finally, we talk about Dr. Fry’s upcoming book on peace systems.

Dr. Andrew Berry is a lecturer in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He is an evolutionary biologist with a particular interest in Alfred Russel Wallace. His research combined field and laboratory methods to detect positive Darwinian selection (i.e. adaptive evolution) at the molecular level in natural populations. He has published two books: Infinite tropics: an Alfred Russel Wallace Anthology, with a foreword written by Stephen Jay Gould, and DNA: The Secret of Life with James Watson.

This is the second part of our 2-part episode on the history of evolutionary theory/biology.

In this episode, we start with population genetics, its early developments, how it led to the development of inclusive fitness theory, and what happened after the discovery of the double-helix structure of the DNA, what we learn about evolution by natural selection by understanding genetics, and how to detect adaptive evolution on the level of the genome. We then discuss speciation, what we know about it, and some of the controversies there. We address specifically the question of why there are more species more densely packed as one moves from the poles to the Equator. Finally, we talk about what we can learn by studying evolution in islands.

Dr. James Costa is Executive Director of the Highlands Biological Station and Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Western Carolina University. He has authored 7 books, including Darwin's Backyard: How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory (W. W. Norton, 2017) — a finalist for the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Prize — and the co-edited volume An Alfred Russel Wallace Companion (Chicago, 2019).

In this episode, we talk about Darwin, Wallace, On the Origin of Species, and The Descent of Man. We first talk about On the Origin of Species, where Darwin’s ideas came from, and in what ways they differ from Wallace’s. We then get into The Descent of Man, and go through some of the most important topics covered there, including sexual selection, our primate origins, the evolutionary origins of our mental faculties, race and sex differences, cultural evolution, and (cultural) group selection. We also talk about how Darwin was a precursor of evolutionary psychology. We discuss the eusocial insects, and if their behavior is best understood as the result of inclusive fitness/kin selection or group selection. Finally, we give a summary of some of the most important things Darwin got right and wrong.
