Lucy Cooke is a New York Times best-selling author, award-winning documentary filmmaker and broadcaster, National Geographic explorer and TED talker with a Masters in Zoology from the University of Oxford. Her latest book is Bitch: A Revolutionary Guide to Sex, Evolution and the Female Animal.

In this episode, we focus on Bitch. We start by discussing the difference between sex and gender, and where assumptions regarding the female sex come from. We talk about behavioral sex differences, and how sex is defined. We go through sexual selection, and what females gain by mating with multiple partners. We talk about how the study of female genitalia has been neglected. We discuss if the female orgasm is an adaptation, and if there really is such a thing as a “maternal instinct”. We talk about mother-offspring conflict, and female intrasexual competition. We discuss primate societies, and phylogenetic comparisons. We talk about menopause and grandmothers. We discuss asexual reproduction, and if the Y chromosome is disappearing. Finally, we talk about the origins of gender inequality, and what needs to be revised in the field of evolutionary biology.

Dr. Lionel Page is a Professor of Economics and Director of the Behavioural and Economic Science Cluster at the University of Queensland. He is interested in understanding how people make decisions, alone or in groups. He is the author of Optimally Irrational: The Good Reasons We Behave the Way We Do.

In this episode, we focus on Optimally Irrational. We start by discussing what it means to be optimally irrational, and how rationality has been traditionally studied in economics. We talk about biases, replacing the H. economicus model, and adding an evolutionary lens to human behavior. We then go through some psychological phenomena, including rules of thumb and gut feelings; reference-dependence and loss aversion; overweighting the probabilities of extreme outcomes; preferences; kindness and reciprocity; emotions; commitment; social identity; indirect speech, ambiguity and innuendos; and overconfidence and self-deception. Finally, we discuss what rationality is.

Dr. Daniel Williams is a Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, and an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI). He works mostly in the philosophy of mind and psychology. His primary research interest at the moment is on how various forms of irrationality and bias are socially adaptive, enabling individuals to achieve social goals that are in conflict with epistemic goals.

In this episode, we talk about beliefs, rationalization markets, misinformation, and motivated cognition. We start with beliefs: what they are, where they stem from, and why we hold them. We discuss the social functions of beliefs, and get into socially adaptive beliefs, and their relationship with confabulation, rationalization, positive illusions, and identity-protective cognition. We talk about rationalization markets, politics, and understanding misinformation. Finally, we discuss absurd beliefs, irrationality, and motivated cognition, with a focus on motivated ignorance.

Dr. Batja Mesquita is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Leuven, Belgium, where she studies the role of culture in emotions, and of emotions in culture and society. She is director of the Center for Social and Cultural Psychology in Leuven. She is the author of Between Us: How Cultures Create Emotions.

In this episode, we focus on Between Us. We start by talking about what emotions are, and their functions. We discuss how people think about and categorize emotions, and the MINE (Mental, Inside, Essentialist) and OURS (Outside, Relational, Situational) models of emotions, and their relationship with wellbeing. We talk about raising children cross-culturally. We go through a few emotions, like anger and shame, and love and happiness, how they manifest across cultures, and ask if love is at the basis of all intimate relationships, and if everyone cares about happiness. We talk about how language relates to emotion, and the developmental aspects associated with emotion acquisition. We discuss the applications of research on emotion. Finally, we talk about the work of Paul Ekman, evolutionary approaches to emotion, and “basic emotions”.

Dr. Jeanne Bovet is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology at Northumbria University. Broadly, she tries to understand how evolution shaped our preferences, and what its consequences are in our contemporary lives.
Her work has covered various topics such as parent-offspring conflict over mate choice, variation in feminine beauty standards through history, sexual selection on age at menopause, and mate preferences for homogamy in facial features.

In this episode, we talk about female attractiveness, and parent-offspring conflict over mate choice. We first talk about the evolutionary rationale behind female attractiveness, and what men evolved to find most attractive in women. We get specifically into the waist-to-hip ratio, and facial attractiveness. We discuss variation in female attractiveness across time and cultures. Finally, we talk about parent-offspring conflict over mate choice.

Dr. Denis Tatone is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Cognitive Development Center at Central European University. He is a cognitive scientist broadly interested in the evolution and development of social cognition. His research focuses on how the mind represents the social world in terms of its constituent interactions, relations, and structures. He strives to develop a mechanistically tractable account of how humans from the first years of life form and flexibly transition among these representations.

In this episode, we talk about how infants interpret giving and taking actions, and the development of prosociality. We start with giving and taking actions, and talk about expectations surrounding giving; how infants think about possession; norms of ownership, and how they vary cross-culturally; expectations surrounding reciprocation; how infants infer social relations from giving and taking actions; and how giving actions influence how they encode objects. We then get into prosociality, and ask if infants prefer helpers or hinderers. Finally, we discuss if there are stages of development for prosociality.

Dr. Wiebke Bleidorn is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Zurich. Dr. Bleidorn examines the conditions, mechanisms, and consequences of personality change. Personality change is an emerging subfield that straddles the areas of personality, developmental, and social psychology. Dr. Bleidorn's work sits at this intersection. Her current research involves questions about the cultural and social conditions under which people change, the genetic and environmental mechanisms that account for change, and the consequences of these changes for psychological functioning and important life outcomes.

In this episode, we talk about personality changes. We first contextualize the conversation, by talking about the Big Five personality traits and their structure. We talk about the heritability of these traits, and how they are influenced by the environment. We get into personality plasticity, and go through individual differences in it; patterns in personality changes across the lifespan; the transition to adulthood, and the transition to parenthood; and the impact of life events. Finally, we discuss if people can deliberately change their personality.

Dr. Christian B. Miller is the A. C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. His research is primarily in contemporary ethics and philosophy of religion. He’s the author of several books, the most recent one being Honesty: The Philosophy and Psychology of a Neglected Virtue.

In this episode, we focus on Honesty. We start by discussing what makes something a virtue, and what honesty is. We talk about behaviors that are incompatible with honesty, with a focus on lying, cheating, and stealing. We also talk about cases where there is conflict with other moral values. We discuss who counts as an honest person, and we get into contextual factors and intentionality. We refer to the particular cases of promise-making, and omission. We ask if one can be too honest. We go through some psychological studies on honesty, environmental factors, and possible interventions to promote it. Finally, we discuss if the virtues have been neglected in Philosophy.

He is also a historian of the French Resistance. He’s the author of several books, including As Gods: A Moral History of the Genetic Age.

In this episode, we focus on As Gods. We first talk about the history of humans altering genomes, and the advent of genetic engineering. We discuss why geneticists paused their work in the 1970s, and new protocols in laboratory research. We go through different types of technology, like genetically modified organisms (GMOs), gene therapy, and gene drives. We talk about another pause in 2012, and a development in 2019. Finally, we discuss how the press communicates about genetic engineering.

Dr. Neil Levy is Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics. He is a wide-ranging philosopher, working principally at the intersection of philosophy of mind and psychology and ethics. He is the author of several books, including Bad Beliefs: Why They Happen to Good People.

In this episode, we focus on Bad Beliefs. We start by discussing what are rational beliefs, and concepts like higher-order evidence, and the epistemic environment. We discuss why sometimes people express beliefs they don’t really hold. We talk about how levels of intelligence and education predispose people to holding inaccurate beliefs, and the role played by political ideology. We talk about individual cognition, group deliberation, and knowledge as a social phenomenon. We ask if the “solitary genius” is a myth, and if people really have “belief systems”. We talk about belief revision, and how beliefs are shallow. We discuss the social and institutional cues on which beliefs depend. We also get into virtue epistemology, critical thinking, and nudging. Finally, we discuss if people respond to evidence, and if humans are rational.

Dr. Eric Schniter is a Lecturer in Anthropology at California State University, Fullerton, and a Visiting Research Associate at the Economic Science Institute at Chapman University. He has been examining the development of skill, knowledge and material production across the lifespan. He is also interested in how emotions calibrate personal and interpersonal behaviors, contributing to relationship maintenance and well-being.

In this episode, we talk about skill and knowledge acquisition, and trust-based interactions. We start by talking about the acquisition of skill, knowledge, and material production across the lifespan in foraging societies. We also discuss ethnobiological knowledge, sex differences in knowledge acquisition and specialization, and storytelling skills. We then get into how human relationships are maintained, with a focus on trust. We discuss how promises, apologies, and confessions build and rebuild trust. We talk about dishonesty and mistrust, and gender stereotypes associated with them. We talk about trust games, and what we can learn from them. Finally, we discuss the role that risk plays in the evolution of human exchange.

Dr. Claudio Tennie is a Tenured Research Group Leader (“Tools and Culture among Early Hominins”) in the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology at the University of Tübingen. His main research triangulates what makes human cognition unique - as well as why.

In this episode, we talk about tool behaviors, and culture. We start with tool behaviors in apes, including flaked stone tools in orangutans and chimpanzees, and food cleaning in gorillas. We talk about what might have been the tool behaviors of early hominins. We discuss what we can learn by studying chimpanzees in captivity, and the psychological mechanisms that underly the acquisition of tool behaviors. We talk about children spontaneously inventing tool use behaviors, and cultural behaviors that do not need cultural transmission. We ask if human cognition is unique, and get into high-fidelity social learning and over-imitation. We talk about cumulative culture, the role teaching and curiosity play in it, and what distinguishes human culture from chimpanzee culture. Finally, we discuss if science can be understood from a cultural evolutionary perspective.

Dr. James Zimring is Thomas W. Tillack Professor of Experimental Pathology at the University of Virginia. He is the author of What Science Is and How It Really Works (2019). His latest book is Partial Truths: How Fractions Distort Our Thinking.

In this episode, we focus on Partial Truths. We start with the premise of the book, and explain what a fraction is. We go through some biases and heuristics, like the confirmation bias and the availability heuristic, and talk about their evolution. We discuss bias within the criminal justice system. We talk about finding patterns where they do not exist, as in conspiracy theories and prophecies. We discuss why the Universe appears to be designed. We talk about the bad uses of statistics in science. We discuss social cognition, and an interactionist model of human reasoning, as opposed to an intellectualist one. Finally, we ask if it would really be good to overcome errors of reasoning.

Dr. Ryutaro Uchiyama is a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests include cultural evolution, cognitive plasticity, and developmental psychobiology.

In this episode, we talk about the cultural evolution of genetic heritability. Dr. Uchiyama explains the cultural psychobiological framework. We talk about aspects of behavior genetics that get reframed in this framework, like heritability, the environment, gene-environment interactions, and gene-environment correlations. We discuss issues with the generalizability of genetic effects across societies and across time, and predicting how heritability should differ between societies, between socioeconomic levels, and other groupings within the same society. We get into the specific example of IQ, and the Flynn effect. We also talk a bit about personality variation across societies, and limitations with the Big Five personality inventory.

Dr. Susana Monsó is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Logic, History and Philosophy of Science at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. She was the recipient of the Lise Meitner FWF Austrian Science Fund. Her work focuses on the socio-cognitive abilities of animals and their ethical implications. She is the author of “La zarigüeya de Schrödinger: Cómo viven y entienden la muerte los animales”.

In this episode, we focus on “La zarigüeya de Schrödinger”. We start by talking about the field of comparative thanatology. We discuss how we can know that non-human animals have minds, and what a concept is. We talk about stereotypical and cognitive reactions to death. We discuss the issue of anthropomorphism and anthropectomy. We discuss the criteria for a minimum concept of death. We talk about emotional reactions to death, including mourning behaviors. We discuss how sociality might point to an understanding of death, as well as the importance of experience. We talk about behaviors like violence and predation, infanticide, and thanatosis. Finally, we talk about the ethical implications of animals having a concept of death.
