Episodes

  • We recorded yesterday - Sunday, August 9th - early in the afternoon, about twelve hours before the Leafs lost game 5 3-0 without a miraculous comeback and we brought in our friend Rob Guy, team 3MI defenseman & big Leafs fan, to talk through the hopes he and Chuck shared going into the game.

It's probably quite funny to listen to now. We also talk through the Habs upset over the Pens and more Qualifiers shocks while Mike is just hoping to see the Bruins win a game at some point (he's been waiting since frigging March)

But Rob is from Twillingate, which is a finalist for Kraft Hockeyville this year with voting THIS WEEKEND! He talks us through the history of "The George", hockey's role in the town, and what the investment would mean to them moving forward - he also tells us about the best place to get a plate of wedge fries when you head there to watch a game.

All that and more on this week's 3MI!

  • With the crazy 2020 season returning we decided it was finally time to shake off the rust and get back at it.

We go through our thoughts on hockey being back and work through some thoughts on the play in series and even though we don't dig too deep into the announcement of the Kraken, Mike decided to make our logo their colours anyway!

  • So we don't know if you guys heard, but there's this global pandemic thing that shut hockey down and has lead to some general malaise for a lot of people.

With no hockey and not being able to get together to record, we took some time off to focus on other stuff, but we've had enough of that and it's time to shout about hockey on the internet again.

This one is Mike & Chuck playing catch up, we'll be back with a guest and a full episode next week!

The guys talk about how their handling no hockey, offer a brief apology to Flyers fans for sleeping on the team, and provide some updates on how the whole Hockey Heroes Weekend is going.

  • There's A LOT going on in the episode. We use the Trade Deadline to announce a trade of our own; we're swapping out Brothers In Stereo's "The Worst Crowd" for In All Alone's "Highway 2, Calgary Nothing" and also chat to lead singer Patrick Kordyback about his hockey loving pop punk band In All Alone, being a reasonable Oilers fan, and his dad disowning him if he had played for the Flames. There's also a lot of trade deadline talk. Chuck & Mike rummage through the 30+ deadline deals and chat about what stands out to them.Speaking of stand outs, we couldn't have a hockey related conversation this week without talking about EBUG sweetheart Dave Ayres - the 42 year old zamboni driver who works for the Leafs and also beat them Saturday night. Then we talk to Mike Knuble. Oh man, Mike's career was insane. His first NHL game was Fight Night At The Joe - y'know that game between the Red Wings and Avs. From there he just picked off a checklist of being around huge hockey moments - and we make a realization that even he hadn't picked up on before. There's also some in depth analysis of Chuck finally playing hockey and scoring his first goal at the tender age of 30 as we prep for the Heart & Stroke Hockey Heroes Weekend.Find old episodes and shop at 3MIPodcast.com. • It looks like Chuck gets to tick off another "dream guest" box as we're joined by podcaster, co-host of Ice Surfing, and professional Maple Leafs fan Steve "Dangle" Glynn. Steve talks about his thoughts on this years Leafs season, what his fandom has been, and gives Chuck some pointers on being a grown man who's life has been all about hockey who is finally starting to play.
But we start the show with some news; you might have seen TR's announcement through Instagram that he's leaving our show to focus on some other stuff including his own "Tales With TR" podcast. We want to say a huge thank you to him for the last year, and wish him all the best with his show.
From there we work at carving out a new era of 3MI - we bring back the Oh Baby Moment as we discuss whether or not it's OK to kick someone, and after the interview with Steve we talk through this years coaching changes in the NHL.

  • After a too-long hiatus Mike and Chuck hop on the mics to review some of the big hockey stories we missed.
We actually recorded this almost a week ago, but Mike got tied up with some work stuff and was out of town and didn't get it posted before.
We'll have a new episode dropping in just a few days!

  • We're back with our first "regular" episode of the new year! We break down some of the biggest stories in hockey this week like the Laviolette firing, Williams heading back to Carolina, and just what the hell is happening with Montreal.
Then our guest Jeff Sirkka gives TR a chance to reference the polish folk dance "the mazurka" in his intro so you know it's going to be a wild one. Jeff had a storied career in the minors and got just about as close as you can get to playing in the NHL without actually playing in the NHL.
We come back to chat about the World Juniors and Newfoundland's top NHL prospects, and get a little more negative than we should with a barroom hypothetical.

  • We put out a call to you guys for your favourite good news hockey stories from 2019 for us to talk through as we look back on the year and here they are, with some of ours along the way.
We also talk to some beauties - Nik Abbott hops on to talk about meeting Tim Thomas not long before he came out with the news of his struggles with post concussion syndrome.
Then we've got Ray & Evan who made a pretty big impression with the goalie community when Ray posted a photo of Evan after he got drunk, decided his pads were too big, and chopped them down. It's a hilarious story from a couple great guys.

  • Merry Christmas, Everybody!
This week we've got a guest who knows what the true meaning of Christmas is all about - beating Russia at the World Juniors.
Mike Watt actually scored the game winning goal against Russia in Canada's first playoff game in the U20 tournament. He'll tell us a bit about that, his pro career, an obligatory Mike Milbury story, and how he headed to the KHL before the lock-out to get jump start on the craziness of playing over there.
Plus, we talk a bunch about the U20 - including why TR wasn't on Mike's team for the 1995-96 tournament (it's a crazy story).

  • It's the return of the Sandman!
Terran Sandwith is back (and so is TR), but rather than a traditional interview - we've already done that with Sandman - we have a roundtable about what the hell is happening with hockey coaches and the seismic shift that seems to be underway with the attitudes around the job.
We also got the chance to break some exciting news to TR and Sandman in the middle of what got to be a pretty intense discussion.

  • We're back! Well, 2/3 of us are.
As you guys might have seen from his IG Stories, TR is taking a bit of time to focus on some other stuff but Mike & Chuck file into the makeshift version of the Ten Dollar Studio to catch up on some big news from the hockey world over the last few weeks. We talk about everything from the surging NY Isles, the incredible starts from a couple of dynamic duos, the slow start of the Flames (and this was Saturday so there's some "I don't think they need to fire Peters" talk that hasn't aged well), Cherry, Babs, and a lot more.
Then we're joined by Matt Wright, one of the hottest young stand-ups in Canada who is currently on a nationwide tour with Danny Bhoy. Matt is a huge Leafs fan so hr had a lot to say about Babcock and his thoughts on hockey in general along with how he got started in comedy and his time as a minor hockey player in Gander.

  • Clear the track, here comes Shack! We've got the legend that is Eddie Shack on the show this week and bring on some beauties to help us out with it.
Before the theme song even finishes we dive into some serious music talk with the one and only Terry Ryan Sr. Eventually Chuck shows up and we talk about some hockey, particularly Milan Lucic and everyone being upset at him for doing what he's specifically paid money to do.
Then we make way for 3 time All Star and FOUR TIME CUP CHAMP Eddie Shack. Eddie has just written a new book with the help of (friend of the show) Killer Ken Reid, Evanka's friend. Eddie wows us with some incredible stories of unjust penalties, Rocket Richard, and losing his license at 13.
    This one is incredible.
There's a whole bunch more, including Mike & Chuck geeking out about jerseys once the room clears, but oh boy, you don't want to miss this week's 3MI brought to you by HeadCheckHealth.com

  • Chuck is still in Montreal so this week it's just Mike & TR talking about their choice to not swear last week and how they made it through.
Then Steve Kiely from Canadian rockers Monster Truck comes on to talk touring, being in video games, and what its like to be the goal song for the team you grew up idolizing.

  • We've got Tim Thompson on the show this week and he may be the the most unsung, under appreciated guest we've had - even though we all sing his praises and appreciate him A LOT.
This guy has made you cry. I guarantee it. Tim is a filmmaker who through the earlier part of the decade was responsible for the montages that opened Hockey Night In Canada. Those emotionally resonate and stirring pieces set to your favourite songs? That was Tim.
What you might not know about him is that before he went after your feels every week he went after hockey dreams - even playing a year of pro in a place he calls a "cross between Slap Shot and Spinal Tap". We talk through all of that and how it lead to his career with CBC Sports and Paul Coffey almost getting him in some trouble over song licenses.
Plus - Mike & TR try to make it a whole episode without swearing.

  • Hoo boy, get ready for this one.
We're all here for the intro, which is nice, and we actually talk about some hockey including who is off to a slow start (The Lightning) and who is off to a huge start (Real Deal James Neal) and then we get to our interview.
Ryan "Skinny" Anderson isn't a name a lot of hockey fans may know out of the gate, having spent his career in Austin and Orlando, but it was in the latter where he caught up with TR, won a championship, and cemented his status as one of the craziest people you'll ever hear from. He went full Ned Braden in an out of town barn after winning the 'ship - and that's just the beginning of the night. You'll also hear about how he "missed" his own wedding (but that really depends on how you define the word "missed").
I'm telling you, this one isn't for the faint of heart. Strap in.

  • We've got another week where Terry & Mike start things off and Chuck comes by to finish up.
The part that's different though is that Mike & TR spend the first bit of the show actually talking about hockey as they discuss some interesting stories from the first week of the season including Milan Lucic's job with the Flames and Jack Edwards' ability to piss off Roman Polak's agent. But not to fear, they somehow wind up talking about movie popcorn and Neil Sedaka before we get to the guest.
Tara Slone joins us to talk about training to be an opera singer before acting in B horror movies and leading Joydrop, about her solo records and Breakfast Television, and how that all lead her to her current gig co-hosting Rogers Hometown Hockey with friend of the show Ron MacLean and what she's looking forward to about the upcoming season - which will bring her out our way in a couple weeks.
Then TR and Chuck tag out and Mike and Chuck talk about some of the same stuff, but there's more bickering about it than earlier.

  • This week TR and Mike are joined by one of the greatest chefs in Canada; who just happens to be one of Terry's oldest friends.
Jeremy Charles joins the guys at the Ten Dollar Studio and hops in Chuck's empty seat to reminisce about growing up in Mount Pearl, playing PeeWee hockey in Quebec, sitting in Terry's WAG seats at Canadiens games with Sam Roberts (Happy Birthday Sam), and how all that lead him to a fascinating career traveling the world as a renowned chef with two incredibly popular restaurants and a new book, "Wildness", on store shelves now.

  • Don't worry folks, we're making up for the live show not getting uploaded with this behemoth of an episode.
Off the top TR and Mike share their excitement for this week's guest, along with some thoughts about baseball movies before Chuck arrives just in time for a history lesson about the origins of the Screech In and Mike basically begs for an in-kind sponsorship.
Then we bring in the prolific polymath Dave Bidini to talk about all the things he does and how hockey seems to be at the heart of all of it. Dave talks us through the new Rheostatics record, graciously answers questions about our favourite tunes, records, books, finding hockey in Transylvania, baseball in Italy, and how Wendel Clark gave the best reply to an attempt at introduction ever.
At this point things are running long, to say the least so TR tries to queue up some topics for next week and still gets hauled into a discussion about the salary cap and current RFA class.
