For decades, Egyptologists have dismissed the notion that the pyramids incorporated any human-made cement-like materials. But Barsoum's team at Drexel University has uncovered startling new evidence from advanced microscopy analysis of pyramid samples. We talk to him about becoming entranced with the deep history of Egypt, the process of determining the true nature of a stone, and the open questions about this lost civilization that keep him up at night. What if these discoveries are enough to reshape our understanding of just how advanced and ingenious the ancient Egyptian builders were?Sign up for a yearly Patreon membership for discounted conference tickets: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB(00:00) Go!(00:04:00) Who is Dr. Barsoum?(00:12:29) The romance of differential equations(00:18:47) Academic careers over the years(00:28:12) Geopolymers in Egypt(00:45:49) Visual vs. chemical analysis(01:04:05) The Impossibility of Egyptian Construction(01:17:25) Geometry of Pyramid Construction(01:20:36) Casing Stones alone?(01:25:07) Cast stone in other parts of the world(01:32:45) Geochemistry & material properties(01:44:45) Boundary conditions#science #sciencepodcast #AncientEgypt #Pyramids #Giza #Archaeology#Egyptology #MaterialsScience #Geopolymers #Concrete#SyntheticStone #AncientTechnology #AncientEngineering#ConstructionMarvels #PyramidCode Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci: https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience AND our material science investigations of atomics, @MaterialAtomics https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomicsJoin our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Professor De Cruz' research focuses on philosophy of cognitive science and philosophy of religion, with an eye for historic progressions through ideologies across the ages. In her own words, she is guided by the following question: "We spend what seem on the face of it outlandish amounts of time and energy on these pursuits, which appear to be inessential in keeping us alive in the struggle for survival and reproduction. Why do we make life even more complicated than it already is?" We aim this line of inquiry at understanding the state of today's modern physical conception of the universe: a highly mathematized, often paradoxical interpretation of fundamental material reality.Sign up for a yearly Patreon membership for discounted conference tickets: https://bit.ly/3lcAasBProfessor De Cruz' website: https://helendecruz.net/(00:00) Go!(00:03:55) Seeking out the Renaissance(00:11:11) Missing piece of the middle ages(00:18:31) Downstream of the invention of the printing press(00:26:50) Eternal recurrence(00:34:30) Necessary waypoints for collaboration(00:44:51) A kind of thought that touches all domains(00:56:04) Aristotle - friend or foe to the age of reason?(01:06:55) Getting rid of the prime mover(01:14:45) Untangling "why" from "how"(01:18:51) Kant throws fuel on the fire(01:28:04) Crowning physics as king of the castle(01:36:54) Mystical power of mathematics (i.e. runes)(01:47:46) Wonder in Newton vs Wonder in Descartes(01:56:44) The Conduit of Inspiration to Reality(02:07:49) Is there such a thing as an "accident"?(02:13:48) Closing thoughts#science #sciencepodcast #philosophy #philosophypodcast #MetaphysicalOrigins, #PhilosophyofScience, #ModernScientificUnderstanding, #PhilosophicalInquiry, #IntellectualEvolution, #ScientificMetaphysics, #RenaissanceIdeas, #PhilosophicalPerspectives, #HistoricalProgressions, #CognitiveScienceInsights, #ReligionandScience, #PhilosophyofCognition, #ScientificInquiry, #IdeologicalEvolution, #ScientificRevolution, #MetaphysicalConcepts, #ContemporaryPhilosophy, #IntellectualJourney, #ScientificIdeas, #philosophicaldebate Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci: https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience AND our material science investigations of atomics, @MaterialAtomics https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomicsJoin our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. This is our second conversation with esteemed physics professor, Dr. Andrê Koch Torres Assis. Following our earlier discussion of Weber's electrodynamics, we now move into Professor Assis' other passion: Machian dynamics. Mach is perhaps one of the most well-known behind-the-scenes players in the saga of modern physics. Einstein and others often point to Mach as inspiring their ideas but it is often unclear exactly what Mach was proposing when he said that inertia was simply the result of the gravity of the sum total of all of the distant celestial bodies acting upon something locally. In this podcast we explore Mach's ideas through a few simple experiments. Please tell us your thoughts in the comments!

At least 87 potential authors - from Daniel Defoe to Sir Francis Drake to Anne Hathaway to Sheikh Zubar - have been proposed as candidates, but all of these proposals suffer from the same problem - they don't quite fit the historical facts and so have to be stretched, ill fitting, to even be considered. Only one of the theories seems to make sense in context of history and biography, and it is that the true author of the plays was Sir Thomas North, soldier, lawyer, and translator. Returning guest Dennis McCarthy is joined by journalist Michael Blanding and author Derek Hunter for a conversation about uncovering the true identity of Shakespeare, the life and times of Thomas North, and the tangled thread of politics, philosophy, and liberty that stretches from the printing press to ChatGPT by way of the Old Globe.Tell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQubSupport the podcast by buying Michael Blanding, Dennis McCarthy, and Dennis Hunter's books:North by Shakespeare: https://amzn.to/4a3xp4nThomas North, the Original Author of Shakespeare's Plays: https://amzn.to/3wF1nNxAnonymous Agnostic Antichrist: https://amzn.to/3v17rj7Sign up for a yearly Patreon membership for discounted conference tickets: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB(00:00) Go!(00:03:22) The man & the myth(00:16:08) Repurposing of ancient tales(00:29:27) Conventional Shakespeare Story(00:49:11) Lost Plays of Other Authors(01:04:39) Ressurection of ancient mythology(01:10:25) Theory without a home(01:19:41) Thowing out the good with the bad(01:23:33) Cycles of secular idealism(01:42:42) Telling theory in fiction(01:49:46) Essex rebellion(02:04:20) How to move the needle?(02:16:48) Modern renaissance in the future?(02:28:22) Pendulum of history(02:30:46) Where to find more#Shakespeare #authorshipdebate #SirThomasNorth #DennisMcCarthy #MichaelBlanding #DerekHunter #history #biography #literature #mythsCheck our short-films channel, @DemystifySci: https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience AND our material science investigations of atomics, @MaterialAtomics https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomicsJoin our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. The details of how a sidelined theology became the mainstream have always been obscure but fascinating, an indication of a powerful hold that a spiritual movement exerted in just a few generations. But what if thinking about the emergence of Christianity as a folk tradition is all wrong? What if it sprang, fully formed, from the minds of the Flavian Emperors who wanted to negotiate a lasting peace with the messianic Jews besieging Rome? Using her technical knowledge of natural language processing systems, Seneff set out to untangle the biological literature to see if it was possible to identify an environmental contaminant that could be responsible for the exploding numbers of diagnoses. To her surprise, there was a robust correlation with widespread use of glyphosate, an herbicide that is the main ingredient of the Monsanto product Round-up. He has been named as “one of the greatest financial historians alive” by Fortune magazine, as a result of his prediction of the last two economic bubbles, detailed in his books Devil Take Hindmost, about financial speculation during the dot com bubble and Crunch Time for Credit, about the 2005 housing bubble. He’s attempting the hat trick of economic doomsaying with his most recent book, The Price of Time, all about the true role of interest rates in economic crashes. He argues that abnormally low interest rates coupled to a policy of perpetual quantitative easing has led to an “everything bubble” where all assets, everywhere, are tremendously overvalued. We talk about how he came up with this theory, the poorly understood role of interest, what can be learned from economic collapses of hundreds of years ago, and how theory doesn’t always line up with reality. He was a columnist for Scientific American for 11 years, until they fired him for his 1995 book, The End of Science. In it, Horgan argues that increases in human knowledge have reached an asymptotic phase of marginal improvements, and the future of science is going to look a whole lot like the present. Twenty five years after publication, Horgan’s certainty about the fate of science has started to waver. Quantum physics doesn’t totally fit together, the JWST keeps finding things that don’t make any sense, and our sense of what makes a biological organism is getting constantly blown apart. In our conversation, we go through what Horgan saw that made him so confident that we were almost at the end, how the landscape has changed since the mid nineties, the areas of science that seem most likely to open a whole new world of study for generations to come, and ideas that probably aren't going anywhere, but maybe should.Pick up John Horgan's books on Amazon & support the show: https://amzn.to/49bd7WDTell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQubSign up for a yearly Patreon membership for discounted conference tickets: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB(00:00)
