Today’s episode is part of a special series were doing to focus on the cutting-edge fluid power technologies and customer solutions on display at the 2024 iVT EXPO.
iVT EXPO is an annual exposition for the off high vehicle design and engineering community, with exhibits that are highly focused on a number of key technologies, including new powertrains, electric and hybrid systems, control systems, sensors, and autonomous technologies. Hydraulics serve as a key enabling technology for these vehicles and many of these systems, iVT EXPO offers an ideal platform for growth and expansion of hydraulics, both in its affiliated education program and on its show floor.Our first guest in this series is Adam Livesay. Adam is the co-founder of a company called Elevāt-- a Seattle-based Industrial IoT company focused on connecting the Industrial World. Elevāt powers the ecosystem of smart manufacturers, machines, and connected fleets to deliver smart services, products, and outcomes to the marketplace. We’ve had Adam on the podcast before to help discuss possible IoT applications for the fluid power industry.

Professor Sun, or Sunny, is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota and the Director of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. That Center, known as the CCEFP, is a consortium of academic, industry, and government leaders that directs and conducts groundbreaking research in a variety of fluid power disciplines.
Under Sunny’s leadership the CCEFP recently conducted a workshop and has now published a report on “Challenges and Opportunities for Electrifying Off-Road Vehicles,” and so we invited him into our forum to learn more about the CCEFP and this interesting report.

This episode features Stewart McQuillan, inventor of the Aeroleg – a pneumatic system that allows a paraplegic to operate the foot controls on a helicopter.
Stewart is one of the most interesting people we’ve spoken to on Fluid Power Forum – and he has one of the most innovative, yet simple and emotionally powerful, applications of fluid power technology.
He was a helicopter and fighter pilot in Britain’s Royal Air Force when he experienced a spinal cord injury that left him without the use of his legs. As an engineer and with an attitude of “I’ll show them…” We invited him into our forum today to hear his remarkable story and to learn more about this unique use of fluid power.
