  • Last week, I told you about Robert Silveria aka Sidetrack aka The Boxcar Killer, and his years-long series of murders. Sidetrack traveled at will, with no record of his movements, and his pool of victims were the unhoused, the drifters, and the fellow rail hoppers he encountered. People on the fringe- the kind who wouldn't be missed. This week, the end of the murders, the arrest, and many confessions of Robert Silveria, as well as the California police detective who moonlighted as Elvis- a quirk which endeared him to the killer, and also led to this cop writing the actual book on the case. This is Freedom Part 2: The High Line.

  • Part 1: "Butchered Up"

By the mid-nineteen-nineties, the United States population of train tramps and hobos dropped to only a few thousand from their Depression-era numbers of two million plus. This turn-around began in 1941, when the U.S. began actions during WWII, which led to the military draft, and "the creation of millions of jobs in defense and war industries.” The man we're telling you about today started hopping the rails as a full-time hobo lifestyle in 1991, half a century after the Second World War. He lived as ruler in a kingdom as expansive as the contiguous United States, yet as slim as the space between the rails of the nearly 140,000 miles of freight tracks crisscrossing the country. A nearly unstoppable man, in a world where violence was the law. He called himself Sidetrack.

  • Part 2: The Dream Has Never Changed

Last week I spoke about perpetrator, rapist and murderer Bruce Bradley Bushey. This week, we aren’t talking about him, but about his victims Barbara and her son Patrick. In different ways, Barbara and Patrick both lost their lives to the same man.

Today I’ll talk with Patrick about what he remembers of his mother and the chaos surrounding her death. He’ll talk about how it shaped the way reacted as a teen and how he’s turned into a helper as an adult.

  • Part 1: "When You Stop Breathing"

When a woman’s body was discovered partially undressed, strangled, and abandoned near the Green River in Washington, it was quickly assumed she had been yet another victim of the Green River Killer. Thankfully, witnesses came forward and gave accurate accounts of what happened to Barbara Jean Hegadorn that night. That information led to the arrest of a man who wasn’t the Green River killer, but a man who was out on parole for another violent attack. This is the story of Barbara Jean Hagedorn

  • Part 1: "Victims of Opportunity"

In the early 1980s, a terrifying pattern started to emerge; young women and girls disappearing from the Seattle-Tacoma area. It would take a little over two years for most people to realize the severity of the pattern. When multiple bodies of strangled females were discovered in the Green River and surrounding forests, the media put the population on high alert, there was a prolific serial killer here in the Pacific Northwest. This week on Murder in the Rain, we revisit the case of the Green River Killer in preparation for next week’s discussion with Nic Edwards, one half of the dynamic duo who hosts the popular podcast True Crime Garage.

  • When people commit crimes, they often make headlines for going on the lam, doing anything they can to avoid capture and punishment. In today’s episode, Josh is telling three stories of runaway criminals. One who was possibly innocent, yet disappeared and lived under another name for decades. Another is a shady pilot with more than one wife. The third is a man who disappeared in a river when he just so happened to be a few days from going on trial. These three men may have tried to outrun their problems, but their stories are no longer unsolved mysteries.

  • In a recent Murder in the Rain episode, we discussed the missing women of the Yakama Nation in Washington. The huge reservation is home to rivers, wilderness and an uncountable number of dark corners for people to go missing from. This week, we will be sharing the mysterious deaths that have taken place in the same area; all women from the Yakama area who died in ways that either can’t be explained or appear to be possible homicides. As always, we ask that if you know anything about these cases- even the smallest detail- that you contact the local police agency. We’ve been told by another unsolved case that every time their story is shared publicly, they have received some sort of new tip and they are all helpful. So, if you know something, don’t hesitate! These are the mysterious deaths from the Yakama Reservation.

  • The Martin Family loaded into their cream-and-red station wagon for a trip up the highway on December 7, 1958. The family was on the hunt for a Christmas tree and greens to make wreaths. From Portland, they drove east into the Columbia River Gorge. Parents Ken(54) and Barbara(48, I know) were in the front, with Ken driving, and their daughters Suzie, Virginia, and Barbie were in the back.

As night fell on the Martins' block, a few neighbors noticed the family hadn't returned. The station wagon wasn't parked under the carport, and the lights inside the home were out. No one was home, and they would never be home again. Five members of the Martin family vanished that day, most of them without a trace.

  • In August of 1997, the quaint little city of Selah, Washington, was shocked to learn that one of their own, Carolyn Clift, was found dead inside her own residence, the victim of a particularly brutal stabbing. Despite multiple eyewitnesses who had heard a disturbance and even glimpsed a potential suspect fleeing the scene, the investigation languished into a cold case. However, a breakthrough occurred providing crucial information that would ultimately crack the case wide open.

  • Part 2: “The Names of the Dead”

The Order was a gang of white supremacists turned domestic terrorists. Based out of Washington, headed by extremist Robert Mathews and fueled by hate, The Order carried off a series of bank and armored transport robberies in an effort to fund a race war and the eventual overthrow of the government. In the midst of their crimes, they carried out an assassination- that of controversial Denver talk radio host Alan Berg, who was executed in his driveway. On the run after a shootout with the FBI at a Portland, Oregon motel, Mathews and his followers had regrouped at the secluded homes they'd rented at Smuggler's Cove on Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound. On the morning of Friday, December 7, the gang's three safe houses were quietly surrounded by the FBI. Lights and movement could be seen inside as agents prepared to engage with their targets. When they moved in, Mathews opened fire, and a standoff ensued.

  • Part 1: “The Last Angry Man”

It started with a sick dream of a violent revolution and a race war. Robert Mathews blamed Jewish people for all of the ills of the world. He wanted to see them annihilated, so he formed a group, culled from other extremist assemblies, and called it The Order. Their aim was to fund the overthrow of the government through counterfeiting and the armed robberies of banks and armored transport vehicles. With success, their brazenness escalated, and they decided to make a statement, with the assassination of a prominent radio host, shot at close range with a silenced submachine gun. Intended as a mission statement to the world, the group was too short-sighted to recognize it was the impetus of their downfall. This is The Order, part 1 of 2: The Last Angry Man.
