Do you ever wonder...where do you START when you want to decorate your home or re-fresh a single room?
Starting BIG with a purchase could possibly be the worst thing you could do as you begin re-designing your home. So, put away your credit card and grab a notebook and a pen because you'll want to pay attention to the DETAILS.
Learning your design style is not just an important step. It's THE MOST IMPORTANT first step, so what details do you pay attention to? All of them!
Your style is more nuanced than the global terms that are tossed around left and right. Your style is more YOU than it is Farmhouse. It's more YOU than it is Boho. It's more YOU than it is Traditional. Cottage. Country. Industrial. Fill in the BIG global design style. Once you understand what your style is, you have the freedom to mix and match.
Do you like a little Cottage and a little Industrial, but wonder how to blend the two? Looking at the fine details of the design elements you gravitate toward will help!

"I have decision fatigue!"
These were the words my Home Design 101 student, Susan, said when we were talking about her couch. Decision Fatigue is when you are so overwhelmed with the myriad of choices in front of you that you don't know how to narrow it down in order to make a design decision. Turns out, Susan does NOT have decision fatigue. She knows EXACTLY what she wants. Why? How? Susan is learning to understand her unique design style and she's applying that style to the decision surrounding her couch. What's the problem then? The problem is that we haven't looked long enough for a couch that meets her aesthetic. I have full confidence that we'll find it.
In this behind the scenes look at Office Hours inside of Home Design 101, Susan has several other ah-ha moments. Those teeny tiny side tables she inherited from her parents. They hold a lot of power. So much power that they are dictating bigger decisions like which dining table to purchase. How can something that small have so much power? We talk about it inside Office Hours and we're inviting you in on the conversation.
If you want design break throughs and coaching like Susan, join me inside Home Design 101 or join me inside our:

Have a messy husband?
OR
Maybe you have a hubby who doesn't agree with your style?
In today's episode we're talking about this hot topic that happens in SO many homes. You may have the best solution for making your home beautiful and keeping it tidy, but the partner you share it with seems to sabotage your every effort.
In today's episode I'm teaching you the three steps to partnering together to reach the goals you have for your home. Do you get to have it all your way? Maybe...or maybe not. The goal, however, is never to bully your partner into relenting, nor is it to have you relent on what it is that you want. Finding a solution that works for the two of you is the goal.

Have you started decorating for spring?
Decorating your home for spring doesn't mean you have to put out all the eggs, bunnies and carrots. Though those can be cute in vignettes, it can also cheapen the presentation of your home decorating. Instead of decorating overtly with spring elements, try decorating with the allusion to spring.
In this episode I share five tips that help you allude to spring in your decorating and by doing THAT, you immediately elevate the look of your home's design.
1. Spring clean - including decluttering, airing out and rearranging
2. Bring the outdoors in, but first you need to go outdoors to gather inspiration
3. Shop the house for things you already own that allude to spring
4. Re-enter items into your room in layers - double and triple checking your choice before styling
5. Take a picture to check your volume and location of decorations

What's my design style?
It's the age-old question. What's my style? What name can I give it? What box can I put it in to make my job of decorating my home easier?
The hard truth: those home decorating style quizzes DON'T make your job easier. They make it harder...a LOT harder.
Your design style can be labeled, but it should be labeled by you and you alone. Why? Because you and I can both be looking at the exact same picture with the same design style label and interpret it two different ways.
Inside the BACK TO BASICS BOOTCAMP I teach you how to learn your design style...not just how to recognize a pretty picture. I teach you the nuances that make up your style and help you make a label that YOU understand. When you do that...you UNLOCK the secret to learning how to decorate your home.
This is the NUMBER ONE thing you should do when you are wanting to learn how to decorate your home, you're feeling stuck or uninspired, you feel like you lack the decorating gene. THIS, friend, is it!

Live Organized by Design with Kimberly Armstrong
In today's episode I'm chatting with interior designer and home organization expert, Kimberly Armstrong of Armstrong Design Collective. We chat about designing a space based on functionality before beauty, the art of organized living and being conscious consumers so we know what we're bringing into our homes so we can live BIG even in small spaces.
Organization isn't just about everything having a place to call home, it's about functionality and having homes that serve the family well through intentional organizational planning.
"When you start with a blank space, you can make better space for the things you have to store." - Kimberly Armstrong
Learning the art of conscious consuming is at the heart of having an organized space. You'll learn that conscious consuming is being mindful of what you're bringing into your home and why. You can be a conscious consumer when you ask yourself:
1. Do I need it?
2. What's the cost of the item (both monetary and physical)?
3. Where's it going to live?
4. Does it add value to my home in a way that serves my family?
You can connect with Kimberly on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/armstrong_design_collective/

Do you want more COLOR in your home decorating?
Beige, taupe, white, and gray walls are fine, but what happens when you crave a bit more color in your home decorating? What happens when you want to add more boldness but are stopped from action because you are afraid of the change?
In today's podcast I'm answering listener Jen's question and easing her fear about putting more color into her home decorating. We first need to break through the barriers that are keeping her stuck, but then we dive right into the tactical ways she can approach adding more color and playfulness in a home that is mostly benign in design.
If you're ready to embrace color, cohesiveness and your design style in your home but you don't know where to start, I invite you to join me in my LIVE, FREE two day Back to Basics Bootcamp where I am teaching you the power of understanding and identifying your personal design style so you can begin making confident design decisions in your own home with less overwhelm, frustration and wasted money.

Does the thought of decorating your home like Grandpa's house make you want to break out in hives?
In today's episode, I'm sharing the secret behind the home design style: Grandpa Chic. It's a timeless, sophisticated, artfully decorated, vintage inspired comfortable home decor style. Homes that are Grandpa Chic are non-pretentious, inviting, comfortable and layered with warm tones and lots of texture. Quality furnishings that span the generations are a highlight while timelessness trumps the latest trend.
Listen to today's episode for the seven elements you can infuse into your space if you want a home that feels a little more chic than plain ol' grandpa's...Grandpa Chic.

How do you see the BIG PICTURE vision for your home's design?
It starts in the unlikeliest of places and it starts very, very small!
When we think of creating a big picture vision for our homes, we immediately think about putting all of our favorite things into one place and most of us put those things onto Pinterest boards.
But using Pinterest in this capacity only confirms only one thing: that we know how to identify pretty pictures. That is a great start, but identifying pretty pictures and translating those to your home are two separate skills.
Taking some of those pretty pieces we find on Pinterest and isolating individual objects to place onto a mood board or notebook of inspiration is the next best step.
But knowing HOW to identify which specific pieces should go onto those mood boards is key!
In this episode I'm teaching you why looking at the small, fine details matter and how they matter MOST for being able to create a BIG picture vision for your home's design.
This is a high level teaching of how to start identifying the small design elements that make up your style, but I'm teaching more specifically HOW to identify your style inside my

When you have a room in your home with little to no natural light, you have three choices for decorating:

Bonus: traditional pattern
Creating intentional spaces in your home using your design aesthetic (or design style) is something that can be learned. 3 Ways you can incorporate vintage furniture into your more modern design style:
So, you LOVE modern farmhouse design aesthetic, but mom brings over your grandma's vintage hutch. It's lovely, but it was lovely in grandma's home because it was grandma's. You wouldn't mind entertaining the idea of keeping it, but you don't know how to marry such an antiquated piece of furniture with a more modern home with modern furnishings.
First thing's first...if you're receiving this as a gift from a family member who wants to 'keep it in the family' be sure you understand the rules of engagement - aka - the expectations. Know the boundaries up front before you agree to say yes to a piece that, though lovely, you may not want to keep in its current state. Ask: will you be ok if I change it (paint it, stain it, add legs to it, add wallpaper to it, etc.). If the answer is no, as the receiver of the gift, it's OK for you to politely decline. However, there are things you can do to marry vintage furniture with a more modern design style.
1. If it's part of a set - break up the set. Furniture sets in general immediately date your room often times create a bulkiness in the room that is hard to design or decorate around.
2. Remember that contrast is a good thing. Think in terms of opposites attract: old vs. new. Light vs. dark. Opposite, in home design are no different. Pairing complete opposites is a fun way to design a home. Think of these combos as examples: masculine vs. feminine. Industrial vs. modern.
3. Modify the original piece by painting or staining it, changing hardware, adding wallpaper, legs or caning. Think outside the box to modify it in a way that makes the structure of the antiquated design a bit more current.

Are you afraid of making a MISTAKE?
What if I choose the wrong color?
What if I mess it up?
What if I choose the wrong size?
What if I don't like the change?
What if I like it?
Raise your hand if you feel stuck in in-action because you are afraid that you'll make a mistake while decorating your home? In this episode I share my reasons why making a mistake might actually be the best thing for you! Why? Because mistakes mean ACTION. And action is opposite of being stuck.
The 5 Ps to help you take action in home decorating when you're worried about making a mistake:
1. Petite: start small
2. Pin: see the big picture by going microscopic (hint: it's not about collecting beautiful images on Pinterest)
3. Practice: taking action, even small action, is better than staying stuck
4. Partner: grab a partner, take a class, hire a coach - get the accountability, but DON'T put out a poll on Facebook
5. Patience: celebrate your progress, embrace the imperfections and have a little grace for this learning period
