Sean is passionate about the benefits of personalized physical therapy and fitness and has seen firsthand how they have improved the health of his clients. Sean’s mission is to make the ground floor of healthcare fitness-oriented.     WHAT IS MASTER’S PERFORMANCE?

    Masters Performance is a program specifically designed for aging adults. As we get older, our body starts to become less resilient and we are more prone to health problems. This science-backed program addresses the specific needs and weaknesses of each client. Clients undergo a physical assessment before they begin. In this assessment, Sean evaluated the client’s movement, morbidity, morbidity scales, cardiovascular system, and more. This program can help prevent everything from small nagging injuries to more serious health concerns. Sean has helped clients in their 50’s all the way to their 90’s live a more independent lifestyle!

    Who Is Sharon Gilbert?

    Sharon Gilbert lives in Birmingham, Alabama where she runs her design business. Sharon and her husband have three children and four grandchildren. She is a graduate of Samford University and has always had an eye for design and interiors.   • On this episode of The SavvyCast, my friend Dr. David Sender shares his insight as a resident at The Auburn University Veterinary School of Medicine into navigating the painful choice of euthanasia for pets.

    Who Is Dr. David Sender?

    Dr. Sender is a Chicago, Illinois native who completed his veterinary training at the University of Illinois. After his time there, he went to Colorado State where he completed a small animal rotating internship. He then went on to be a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Sender is now a resident at The Auburn University Veterinary School of Medicine.

    My Experience with Dr. Sender:

    As many of you all know, I lost my beloved buddy Cam in April of this year. His passing was unexpected and excruciatingly painful, though God in his kindness has blessed my family and me through support and love from our community. After a few days of frantic veterinary visits here in Birmingham, I made the decision to take Cam to the teaching hospital at Auburn University Vet School. This is one of the most advanced clinics in the United States for difficult cases in animals large and small. Here we met Dr. Sender, who gently and gracefully walked with us through our last few days with Cam. He cared for Cam in his last days, and eventually performed the euthanasia after we all came to the conclusion that this was the most loving thing to do.

  • Who is Melanie Roberson?

    Melanie Roberson lives in Hattiesburg, MS, with her husband John, a maxillofacial surgeon. She has two college children and is making the most of an empty nest. Melanie's Instagram @melshealthymeals is one of my favorites, as she inspires me with her meals, her love of exercise, and her strong faith and positive outlook on life.

    Why Melanie is so committed to a healthy lifestyle.

    When in college, Melanie gained the "Freshman 15," developed high cholesterol, and simply didn't feel good about herself. When her doctor told her he was putting her on statins, she asked for time to make lifestyle changes. She did, and she never looked back. Her cholesterol is perfect, and she is on no medication.

    Melanie's grocery routine.

    Melanie buys tons and tons of produce; she eats the rainbow! She lives in a small town with limited grocery outlets (no Whole Foods), so she has some favorite ways to get fresh, healthy food to her table.

    Melanie buys produce locally from Farmer's markets and grocery stores. Melanie purchases many favorite products from Thrive Market. She buys seafood online from Sizzlefish. What she doesn't cook that week she freezes. The middle aisle of the grocery store is a no to Melanie. She doesn't stock up on packaged foods or snacks.   • On this week’s episode of The SavvyCast, Jamie is joined by Suzanne Bailey to discuss living with two chronic autoimmune conditions, fibromyalgia and lupus. Suzanne is living a full and productive life despite having both lupus and fibromyalgia. She shares her journey to diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately management of both these conditions.

    Suzanne primarily manages her Lupus mainly with diet and exercise and vitamins. Since she also has Fibromyalgia, exercise and vitamins are VITAL to managing both chronic diseases. Her Lupus attacks my nerves, lungs, and joints. Pain in her feet can be an issue, so she mainly does body strengthening three days a week, mostly low impact.

    This consists of everything from TRX to weight training to HITT classes. Consistency helps maintain flexibility and strength.

    Regular massages and stretching sessions are very helpful, as well as Epsom salt baths after work outs. Suzanne also adds walking, rowing, recumbent biking, and elliptical training in for extra cardio.

    Suzanne takes several vitamins to help manage her condition. She does not take many perscription medications and instead opts to take vitamins.

    Most of the vitamins Suzanne takes can be found on Amazon, although she does take prescription Vitamin D2, which can be requested from your general practitioner. The vitamins Suzanne takes daily are Rheumate, which is a B vitamin. Vitamin D2, 50,000 once a week, and Vitamin D3, 2,000 daily. She also takes zinc and Turmeric to help with inflammation.

    Suzanne has taken one prescription to help manage her neuropathy. She takes 2mg of Naltrexone at night which helps the neuropathy that is widespread, over 80% or my body. After ten years of managing with only diet and exercise, Suzanne also recently added 100 mg of Hydroxychloroquine to combat an ongoing flare. If she experiences a severe flare, she will also take a steroid pack.

    Lupus manifests differently in everyone, so it is important to work closely with your doctor for the best protocol to manage your illness. Communication and honesty is key to finding the best treatment. However, Suzanne wants everyone to know that these two conditions don't define or really limit her from living a full and active life.

  • This week I said goodbye to my best buddy of 6 years, Cam, my beloved Goldendoodle.

    AN UNEXPECTED AND SUDDEN TURN OF EVENTS.

    Life as I knew it was business as usual last week. Menu planning, grocery shopping, creating blog content, and doing my day-to-day routine. Zane was out of town with our daughter and some friends on a Spring vacation in Miami. I was home with my constant companion, Cam, doing life per usual. Little did I know that I was about to face the worst week of my life in recent memory.

    To make things all the more surreal, two days before my difficult journey began, I recorded this podcast on grief with my friend Dimy Mixon, a licensed marriage & family therapist specializing in grief counseling. The timing seems so surreal.

    HOW IT STARTED.

    On Wednesday, April 14th, I noticed a spot of blood on the white hide rug in my office. Thinking Cam had cut his paw on a piece of glass (I had broken a vase that morning), I took him to the vet just before they closed for the day. The vet quickly saw that the blood was from a nosebleed and that Cam had swollen lymph nodes~two symptoms that indicated a serious problem.

    SIX DAYS OF A ROLLER COASTER RIDE.

    The next six days were like a roller coaster. Blood draws and exams daily at the vet. One emergency room vet visit in the middle of the night. Multiple tests. Different doctors at every visit. On day 3, I decided to take Cam to Auburn University Vet School to the teaching hospital. This is one of the most advanced clinics in the United States for difficult cases in animals large and small.

    Twice daily calls from Cam’s assigned physician at Auburn were basically the same. Cam’s disposition was always “bright,” “friendly,” and “loud.” The doctor told us Cam barked~a lot~from his cage. This of course was him looking for me, his mama. On the medical side, the news was never positive. Platelets kept dropping despite every attempt to boost them. From vincristine to several other chemo drugs to a blood transfusion, my buddy was not getting better.

    OUR LAST DAY WITH CAM.

    Zane and Emma arrived home on Sunday, so I thankfully had my family nearby for what happened next. On Monday the 19th at midnight, the phone rang. Dr. Sender’s voice was grave, and I knew we were not going to get good news. Cam’s platelets were still low, and he had some internal bleeding. He needed a blood transfusion to make it through the night.

    The next day, my daughters and I drove to Auburn. We called for them to bring Cam outside to us (COVID rules), as we were there to say goodbye. He walked out on a leash, with a sweet demeanor but obviously weak and no energy. My heart fell when I saw my normally spunky boy look so tired.

    With two of my daughters, we spent the day with Cam outside the vet hospital. We spread blankets under a huge tree, and we had water and food for Cam. Zane was a few hours behind, so the girls and I loved on Cam all day by ourselves. We hugged him, laid beside him, and told him how wonderful he was. We face-timed special friends who loved him and showed him videos of him with his half-brother Winston barking and playing. Cam watched them all. He was so happy to be with us after being alone in a cage. He pressed up against us and soaked in every bit of the love.

    We waited anxiously for Zane, as I needed him for strength to make the decision and carry it out. Cam was beginning to lose energy and cough (blood). When Zane finally arrived, Dr. Sender and his resident Brian Cali sat outside with us and talked about our options.

    In a nutshell, we could keep going medically with little hope, meaning Cam would be back in a cage alone away from his family and being poked and stuck daily. We chose the other option, to love Cam one last day and release him peacefully while holding him in our arms.

    We walked to a lovely courtyard at the vet school. Dr. Sender and Brian were beside us, not rushing us at all, and simply allowing us to grieve, cry, and give them the ok when we were ready. Cam was cradled in our arms at the end, and he had a smile on his face. I chose to step away before the last goodbye, but thankfully my family stayed until the end. My grief was so intense that I could not bear to watch his last breath.

    PAIN MIXED WITH BLESSINGS.

    Despite the excruciating pain, I’ve experienced myriad blessings from this ordeal. Below are just a few, as I am sure there will be more as time passes.

    6 beautiful years with my boy. My 6 years with Cam were endless joy, laughter, companionship, and absolute unconditional love. Support from close friends. The outpouring of love, support, and prayers from friends has been astounding. From my closest circle who’ve brought meals, visited, called, sent care packages and more….they’ve kept me going. Love from virtual friends. I’ve been blessed by an outpouring of love from friends who follow Family Savvy and know and love Cam from seeing him beside me for the last 6 years. The messages have been so kind and heartfelt, and each one has helped make my heart heal a bit more. Perspective on grief. Grief had been a distant memory for me, as I had not experienced it for several decades until now. Losing Cam has reminded me to appreciate every day with my people, as we never know what tomorrow holds. Sweet blessings from God. The last day spent with Cam was bitter, but God gave us some sweetness. The beautiful weather allowed us to enjoy our last day outside. Four of my family members were able to be present. My best friend literally stayed by my side the entire time Zane was gone and things were getting worse with Cam. The blessing to be able to release Cam peacefully and not watch him suffer.

    I know many of you have experienced the pain of losing a beloved pet. It is a pain in a class of its own, as a pet relationship is a unique one. Our pet gives unconditional love, constant companionship, and endless joy. Pets truly are a gift from God that I personally believe He will allow us to enjoy in Heaven. He created animals in the Garden, and I believe they will be present in the new Heaven and new Earth. Either way, pets are a special gift.

  • We all know someone in our lives who is grieving, whether it’s from the loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss, health complications, etc. Maybe you are currently grieving, too. Dimy Mixon, a marriage and family therapist specializing in grief counseling for women, offers practical advice for navigating grief (our own or that of a loved one). In this episode of The SavvyCast, Dimy Mixon, founder and owner of Fountain Counseling in Atlanta, Georgia, joins me to discuss how to navigate personal grief and how to respond to loved ones' grief.     Be kind and gentle to yourself. Surround yourself with loved ones. Do not isolate yourself. Have healthy alone time, but do not isolate. Stick to a daily routine. Exercise Journaling Cling to your faith.

    How can we help those who are grieving?

    Assist them through practical tasks such as making a meal, cutting their grass, running an errand, etc. Use your talents and abilities to serve them. Be physically present. Keep your words simple. Let them know that you’re sorry and that you’re there for them, but sometimes the less we say, the better. If you’re unsure about whether or not the person grieving wants company or not, ask their close friends and family if they want company at this time. Whether it is a card or a text, any sign of care is a gift.

    What NOT to tell someone who is grieving

    While our intentions are good, some common phrases people say can come across as invalidating one’s grief.

    How do people arrive to the Meaning stage of grief?

    There are so many ways someone can reach the Meaning stage of grief, and Dimy and I discuss several examples.

    Disposable gloves- I wear these to mix the crust by hand (and a multitude of other tasks). Stainless steel pizza flipper. The cake spatula is large enough to flip cakes and pizzas with ease. Emile Henry Pizza Stone- I link to my square one below; I have two of them. Nut Milk Bag- These are perfect to remove water from riced cauliflower.

  • In this episode of The SavvyCast, I share my favorite store-bought frozen food items and how I use them to prepare delicious meals, appetizers, snacks, and more.

    Here is what you’ll find in this episode:

    The Flying Meatballs (My favorite kind is their Three Meat Beef, Veal, and Pork meatballs!) When preparing these meatballs, I love to combine them with Rao’s sauce, especially if I’m adding these meatballs to spaghetti. If I really want to take it over-the-top, then I’ll occasionally add burrata cheese. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit (The Cheese and Chive are my favorite). Against the Grain Gourmet Three Cheese Gluten-Free Pizza Shell To prepare this pizza crust, I spray it with EVOO and add meat. Then, I add different kinds of cheeses: shredded or pre-grated parmesan, shredded and balled mozzarella, and burrata cheese. When it comes to pizza sauce, I love to use either Buitoni Pesto, Classico Pesto, or Costco’s Basil Pesto. Against the Grain Gourmet Baguettes Drizzling these baguettes with an infused oil or spraying them with EVOO makes them taste delicious! Then, I loosely wrap them in foil and place them in a 400°F oven. Dr. Praeger's Black Bean Quinoa Veggie Burgers (Gluten-Free AND Vegan) To prepare these, I spray them with EVOO, place them in a Breville Smart Oven on the Air Fry function. (If they don’t start getting crisp, turn it up to a Broil.) Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. I love adding avocado on top of these burgers, and when I season my avocado, I use Lawry’s Garlic Salt or Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. Trader Joe’s Authentic Italian Penne Arrabbiata Trader Joe’s Butter Chicken Alexia Foods Sweet Potato Fries & Puffs and Onion Rings Realgood Foods Stuffed Chicken Diced Frozen Onions (I ALWAYS have a bag of this on hand.)

Hollywood Peel is a quick treatment that is well tolerated by just about any skin types. It exfoliates the skin and gives it a nice glow. Broad Band Light treatment can help discoloration on the hands. Biggest bang for your buck? CO2 Laser Treatment. It helps remove lines and wrinkles in a one-and-done style.
