On this week’s episode of TECHnically Speaking: USITT23 Series, we are joined by 2023 Rising Star Award winner and video designer Adam J. Thompson! We chatted about digital design, his passion for interactive and responsive design environments, and his work with The Deconstructive Theatre Project.
Adam J. Thompson is a video and graphic designer working in in film, television, theatre, and digital narratives. He has worked previously as a creative director and a producer and is the Founding Artistic Director of The Deconstructive Theatre Project, a non-profit multimedia storytelling laboratory which he founded and led from 2006 - 2016.His work as a multimedia performance director and as a video and projection designer has been produced and presented off-Broadway, off off-Broadway, regionally, and on tour with companies and at venues that include New York Theatre Workshop, The Public Theater, Atlantic Theatre Company, Theatre for a New Audience, La Mama, Ars Nova, HERE, The Flea, American Theatre Wing, Terminal 5, Beth Morrison Projects, National Sawdust, Boston Lyric Opera, City Theatre, and Diversionary Theatre. He is an alumni of The Public Theater’s Devised Theatre Working Group and the HERE Artist Residency Program and is has collaborated with the multimedia performance collectives Big Art Group and The Builders Association. Adam is the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, The Jerome Robbins Foundation, and The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation among others and he was an invited exhibitor and ambassador to the 2018 Beijing International Design Biennial. This week we’re getting an inside look at what it takes to create a book for the live entertainment industry. Stage manager, USITT Board member, and co-author of The Production Manager’s Toolkit Cary Gillett discusses how the book idea came to life, the thoughtful changes that came with the second edition, and why this book’s existence is important for the industry.
Cary Gillett has worked as a production manager and stage manager in the Maryland/Washington DC area for over two decades. Cary is currently the General Manager of the DC branch of the event technology company CMI. Previously she has worked as a production manager for the Baltimore Center Stage, University of Maryland in College Park, Round House Theatre, the Potomac Theatre Project and the Helen Hayes Awards, celebrating theatre in the Washington DC area. Her stage management credits include three years as the Resident Stage Manager at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD, the “In Performance” series at the White House and “A Salute to the Presidential Scholars” at the Kennedy Center. Cary is an adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland and Howard Community College where she teaches classes in management and communication. Cary serves as a board member for the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) and is the chair of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access and Social Justice (IDEAS) committee.

We chatted with Kim about her work on Opera in the Ozarks' recent re-envisioned production of The Magic Flute. What makes it re-envisioned? Its eco-conscious spin to the storyline and costumes constructed one hundred percent using trash and recycled materials!

Get to know our guest: Kim Welborn is a freelance costume designer and resident designer for Opera in the Ozarks’ summer program. Her costume career spans the gamut from historically accurate productions, including clothing for Florida’s Quincentennial and the world premiere of My Dearest Friend for the National Park Service Centennial, to a production of The Magic Flute, re-envisioned as an environmental fable and built entirely from trash and recyclables. Recent projects include a 1960’s Best Christmas Pageant Ever and All is Calm, the story of the World War 1 Christmas Eve truce. She has designed more than 30 musicals and plays; favorites include A Little Night Music; Hello, Dolly; Evita; The Producers; Paint Your Wagon; South Pacific; Spamalot; the Diary of Anne Frank and Blithe Spirit. Her past several years have focused largely on opera, including Marriage of Figaro, All is Calm, Tales of Hoffman, Don Pasquale, La Boheme, Amahl & the Night Visitors, Hansel & Gretel, and youth company productions for Opera Orlando; Cosi Fan Tutte, Cendrilllon, Lucia de Lammermoor and Little Women (Opera in the Ozarks); Pagliacci and The Birthday Clown (Savannah Opera Company); Pirates of Penzance (International Opera Center) and Dido and Aeneas (University of Northern Iowa). Kim is a world native who divides her time between New York, Maryland, and Florida.
