  • Kouri Richins, the Utah author charged with the aggravated murder of her husband Eric Richins, is now facing an additional charge of attempted murder following new allegations of poisoning. Prosecutors claim that Kouri attempted to poison Eric on Valentine's Day 2022 by serving him a sandwich laced with drugs, leading to a severe allergic reaction.

According to charging documents released by the Washington County Attorney’s Office, Eric Richins became gravely ill after consuming the sandwich, experiencing hives and other adverse symptoms. In distress, he contacted friends and expressed suspicion that his wife, Kouri, had attempted to poison him.

"He almost lost me," Eric reportedly told one friend, describing the frightening ordeal after consuming the tainted sandwich. "You could hear the fear in his voice," the charging documents state.

The documents reveal that Kouri Richins had allegedly procured illicit fentanyl prior to the Valentine's Day incident and sought stronger doses following Eric's initial illness. Prosecutors suggest financial motives, pointing to life insurance policies valued at nearly $2 million taken out by Kouri on Eric without his knowledge.

Kouri Richins, who has yet to enter a plea but has denied all allegations, faces a litany of charges, including aggravated murder, mortgage fraud, insurance fraud, and forgery. Her attorney maintains her innocence, stating, "there is nothing in the documents that affects Kouri's approach to defending whatever charges the State levies against her."
A preliminary hearing date has been set for May 15 at the Third District Court.
Kouri Richins remains in custody awaiting trial, while the case continues to unfold, shedding light on the tragic and complex circumstances surrounding Eric Richins' death and the subsequent legal proceedings.

  • Utah resident Kouri Richins, already embroiled in a legal battle over the death of her husband in 2022, faces a new array of charges related to alleged fraud, Court TV reports.

In a startling turn of events, Richins finds herself confronted with two counts of mortgage fraud, two counts of insurance fraud, and three counts of forgery, as revealed in recently obtained court documents.

The saga began last year when Richins faced charges of aggravated murder and other offenses in connection with the untimely demise of her husband, Eric Richins. However, the legal landscape has since expanded, unveiling a web of deceit and financial misrepresentation.

Prosecutors allege that Richins, in a bid to secure financial gain, misrepresented her financial standing in mortgage applications. According to court filings, she purportedly claimed inflated account balances, painting a false picture of financial stability.

In one instance detailed in court documents, Richins allegedly stated a balance of $210,898 in her credit union account when the actual figure stood at a mere $15,609. Another mortgage application reportedly claimed an account balance of $702,831, underlining the extent of the alleged deception.

Further exacerbating the situation, Richins is accused of fraudulently applying for life insurance for her husband and forging his signature. This accusation suggests a calculated attempt to exploit her husband's demise for financial gain.

Authorities assert that Eric Richins met his tragic end due to Kouri Richins' actions, alleging that she administered a lethal dose of illicit Fentanyl, surpassing five times the lethal dosage, effectively ending his life.

The aftermath of her husband's death took a peculiar turn as Richins authored and self-published a children's book on grief. This endeavor, seemingly aimed at providing solace to her three sons, contrasts sharply with the allegations surrounding her husband's untimely demise.

The unfolding legal drama casts a stark light on the complexities surrounding the case, with Richins' actions under scrutiny from both legal and public perspectives.

As the legal proceedings progress, the community remains captivated by the intricacies of the case, eagerly awaiting further developments in the pursuit of justice for Eric Richins and closure for his loved ones.

Richins' journey through the judicial system continues, with the newly levied fraud charges adding layers of complexity to an already convoluted narrative.

  • Shockwaves reverberate through the legal sphere as new revelations surface in the high-profile case of Kouri Richins, charged with the murder of her husband, Eric Richins. A recently unsealed search warrant affidavit has shed light on potential involvement by Kouri's mother, Lisa Darden, in what investigators believe could be the planning and orchestration of Eric's untimely demise.

According to court documents obtained by Court TV, Detective Jeff O'Driscoll detailed suspicions surrounding Darden's proximity to a past suspicious overdose death. In 2006, Darden's adult female partner, with whom she shared a romantic relationship, tragically passed away from an oxycodone overdose. Despite having a history of medication abuse, the partner's demise raised suspicions of foul play, especially considering Darden's recent naming as the beneficiary of her estate.

Detectives probing into Kouri and Eric's personal dynamics unearthed a pattern of frequent communication between Kouri and her mother, spanning both personal matters and business dealings. This communication thread forms a critical aspect of the investigation, suggesting a potential nexus between Kouri's actions and her mother's past.

Responding to the State's assertions, Kouri's attorney, Skye Lazaro, staunchly defended Darden, emphasizing the tragic nature of her partner's addiction-related death. Lazaro dismissed allegations against Darden as baseless, asserting that her role as a beneficiary was commonplace and far from indicative of foul play.

"The fact that Ms. Darden's significant other was one of the millions that suffered from, and ultimately succumbed to, opioid addiction is hardly 'suspicious,'" Lazaro stated, challenging the narrative of conspiracy surrounding Darden's involvement.

Despite the defense's rebuttal, the search warrant affidavit underscores the gravity of the investigation, targeting the examination of Lisa Darden's electronic communication devices. Executed on May 4, 2023, the search aimed to unravel potential links between Darden's past and the unfolding tragedy surrounding Eric Richins' death.

As legal proceedings advance and new revelations emerge, the case casts a stark spotlight on the intricate web of familial ties and personal histories entwined within the fabric of a criminal investigation. With each twist and turn, the quest for justice for Eric Richins takes on deeper dimensions, underscoring the complexities inherent in unraveling the truth behind a tangled web of suspicion and accusation.

  • In the ongoing legal saga surrounding the murder trial of Kouri Richins, a pivotal ruling was made by Third District Court Judge Richard Mrazik regarding the disclosure of certain evidence. The decision emerged following a hearing where arguments were presented regarding the release of materials believed to be pertinent to the case.

The Summit County Attorney's Office had sought access to an envelope held by Kouri Richins, a Kamas mother of three, who stands accused of the murder of her husband, Eric Richins. The envelope, labeled as attorney-client privileged, contained a 33-page manuscript and a four-page letter, referred to as "letter number 2."

During the hearing, independent lawyer Jami Brackin, representing the state, and Kouri's defense attorney, Skye Lazaro, presented their arguments before Judge Mrazik. The court granted permission for Brackin to review the contents of the envelope, leading to a ruling on the fate of the manuscript and the letter.

Judge Mrazik determined that while the manuscript need not be disclosed, "letter number 2" was not protected under attorney-client privilege and must be surrendered to prosecutors. However, it remains unclear whether the information contained in the letter is directly related to the case or if its contents will be made public.

This ruling follows previous filings by prosecutors, alleging that Kouri Richins violated jail rules by reading a portion of a letter from another inmate, dubbed the "Walk the Dog" letter, to her mother during a phone call. Subsequent searches of Kouri's cell led to the discovery of this six-page letter, which prosecutors argued contained a request for false testimony from Kouri's brother.

Regarding the disputed manuscript, Kouri's defense asserted that it was an excerpt from a fictional mystery book she was writing, centered around themes of drugs and a Mexican prison. Judge Mrazik's decision to withhold disclosure of the manuscript leaves its contents a mystery, with Brackin prohibited from revealing any details to the County Attorney's Office.

Amidst these legal proceedings, a preliminary hearing date has been set for May 15, offering a glimpse into the timeline of the case against Kouri Richins. She faces serious charges including aggravated murder and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, stemming from the fatal poisoning of her husband, Eric Richins, who ingested five times the lethal dose of fentanyl. Kouri remains incarcerated without bail as the legal process unfolds.

Garner introduces HB569, a bill aimed at preventing convicted spouses from accessing inheritance or prenuptial agreements in cases of murder or incapacitation. The proposed legislation seeks to empower judges to intervene, ensuring that perpetrators do not profit from their heinous deeds.

  • The case of Kouri Richins, accused of poisoning her husband Eric with a lethal mix of fentanyl and Quetiapine, has taken a dark and complex turn. Psychologist John Delatorre joined Tony Brueski on the "Hidden Killers" podcast to unravel the psychological aspects of this alleged crime.

The conversation begins with a critical question: "Did Kouri Richins meticulously plan her husband's murder, or was it an act of desperation?" This question sets the stage for an in-depth analysis of the case and the mind of the accused.

Brueski outlines the allegations against Richins, highlighting the discovery of Quetiapine, an antipsychotic drug used as a sleep aid, in her husband's system. Delatorre explains the drug's typical use and speculates on Richins' possible reasoning. "She probably thinks that it's going to put her husband to sleep and then the rest of the fentanyl will just kill him in a sort of pseudo peaceful way," he suggests, shedding light on the potential thought process behind the alleged poisoning.

The discussion shifts to the psychological profile of someone who would commit such a crime. Delatorre emphasizes that perpetrators of poisoning no longer see their victims as human beings, which allows them to rationalize their actions. "There's no longer any of that social contract that we have that makes it so that we need to be cooperative with one another," he notes, explaining the detachment involved in such crimes.

Brueski and Delatorre also delve into the narcissistic aspects of poisoning as a method of murder. They discuss how it allows the perpetrator to avoid direct violence while potentially gaining sympathy as a grieving loved one. "Is poisoning kind of the narcissist's ultimate way of killing someone if they can get away with it?" Brueski asks, highlighting the manipulative nature of such crimes.

Delatorre points out that Richins' subsequent actions, such as writing a book and appearing on TV, suggest a premeditated plan for attention and gain. "It does seem to be premeditated in some way," he asserts, considering the calculated nature of her follow-up behaviors.

As the episode concludes, Brueski and Delatorre leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "In a case as chilling and complex as Kouri Richins', can we ever truly understand the motivations behind such a heinous act, or will the true intent remain shrouded in mystery?" This question encapsulates the uncertainty and intrigue surrounding a case that continues to captivate and confound observers.

  • In a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, hosts Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke discuss the perplexing case of Kouri Richins. Richins, a mother who wrote a children's book titled "Are You Still With Me?" about the father of her child who died, is now accused of his murder. This case presents a bizarre juxtaposition of a seemingly compassionate act against a backdrop of serious criminal allegations.

The conversation begins with a critical question: "Is Kouri Richins' children's book a genuine attempt to help others cope with loss, or is it a sinister cover for her alleged crime?" This question sets the tone for an in-depth analysis of the case's latest developments.

Brueski outlines the case's key elements, noting that the deceased, Eric Rich, had fentanyl in his system, which was allegedly obtained by Kouri from a friend. Additionally, an autopsy revealed the presence of quetiapine, an antipsychotic drug prescribed to Kouri, in Eric's system. This discovery raises significant questions about how the drug ended up in Eric's body and its potential role in his death.

Dreeke, with his expertise in behavioral analysis, expresses skepticism about Kouri's actions. "She is just low brain power," he remarks, critiquing her alleged method of poisoning as unsophisticated and obvious. Dreeke's negative confirmation bias leads him to believe that Kouri intentionally poisoned Eric, possibly experimenting with toxic drug cocktails.

The hosts delve into the psychology of poisoning as a method of murder, discussing its historical context and modern implications. Poisoning, once a common method in ancient times due to the lack of autopsy techniques, has become less favored due to advancements in forensic science. "It's fascinating... it's fallen out of favor just because of autopsies," Dreeke notes, explaining how modern forensic methods make it easier to detect poisoning.

Brueski and Dreeke also explore the personality traits often associated with poisoners. They speculate that individuals who choose poisoning as a method of murder may view themselves as clever and may be driven by narcissistic tendencies. "They tend to view themselves as very clever, whether it's accurate or not," Dreeke observes.

The conversation shifts to the rarity of poisoning cases and the typical profile of poisoners. Dreeke points out that poisonings are usually perpetrated by medical professionals who have access to and knowledge of toxic substances. Kouri Richins' case, if she is indeed guilty, would be an anomaly given her lack of medical background and the alleged unsophisticated nature of the poisoning.

As the episode concludes, Brueski and Dreeke ponder the defense's potential strategy in light of the unusual nature of the case. "It is exceptionally rare," Dreeke says, suggesting that the defense might argue the implausibility of such an accusation.

The hosts leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "In a case as unusual and tragic as Kouri Richins', can the truth be as straightforward as the evidence suggests, or are there deeper, more complex layers to this story waiting to be uncovered?" This question encapsulates the uncertainty and intrigue surrounding a case that continues to captivate and confound observers.

  • What happens when a marriage turns deadly? This question looms large in the latest episode of "Hidden Killers," where hosts Tony Brueski and former Felony Prosecutor Eric Faddis discuss the chilling case of Kouri Richins, accused of poisoning her husband, Eric Richins. The case, already complex with the involvement of fentanyl, takes a darker turn with the discovery of Kouri's prescribed medication, quetiapine, in Eric's system.

Faddis outlines the growing evidence against Kouri, "The more we learn about it, the more information that comes out, the closer Kouri Richins is being tied to this murder." The presence of her medication in Eric's body raises critical questions about her involvement. However, Faddis also points out potential defenses, including the possibility that Eric was experimenting with drugs or misusing his wife's medication.

The case's complexity is heightened by the discovery of a jailhouse letter written by Kouri, which could be interpreted as a covert message to her family. Brueski ponders its role in the trial, "How do you foresee that being defended, if in fact, it does make it to trial, which it likely will?" Faddis believes the letter's admission is probable, despite its disputed interpretation.

Faddis further explains the diminished privacy rights of individuals in custody, suggesting that the letter's seizure from Kouri's cell is likely permissible. "When you're in the jail, you're not living in your house... You are pretty much subject to search almost all the time," he states, indicating the letter's likely admissibility in court.

The case against Kouri Richins presents a legal and ethical labyrinth. On one hand, there's the damning evidence of her medication in Eric's system and the suspicious jailhouse letter. On the other, there's the defense's potential narrative of Eric's drug misuse. Faddis notes the delicate nature of such a defense, "That's not the most palatable argument to make to a jury because really what you're doing is blaming the victim."

As the case unfolds, it raises broader questions about the boundaries of privacy, the ethics of defense strategies, and the interpretation of evidence. With the trial looming, one can't help but wonder: Will the evidence paint a clear picture of a premeditated murder, or will it reveal a more complex, tragic tale of misunderstanding and misfortune?

  • The Tragic Tale of Kouri and Eric Richins: A Poisoning Mystery Unraveled
What happens when the person you trust the most becomes a suspect in your untimely demise? This question forms the crux of a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," where host Tony Brueski and former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer delve into the chilling case of Kouri Richins and her late husband, Eric Richins. The episode explores the complex layers of a suspected murder, mental health, and the intricacies of legal defense in such convoluted cases.

Eric Richins was found dead with an overdose of fentanyl in his system, believed to have been administered by his wife, Kouri, through a Moscow Mule cocktail. But the plot thickens as more substances, including Kouri's prescription antipsychotic medications used as sleep aids, were discovered in his system. This revelation raises a critical question: Was this a case of a drug addict stealing medication, or a sinister plot by Kouri to end her husband's life?

Jennifer Coffindaffer, with her expertise in criminal investigations, offers a grim view of the evidence. "This evidence looks very negative toward Kouri Richins," she states, pointing to the repeated attempts to poison Eric. The presence of antipsychotic drugs, typically prescribed for conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, adds another layer to the case. Could these medications indicate a potential defense strategy based on mental health?

The conversation between Brueski and Coffindaffer ventures into the realm of legal defense strategies. They discuss the possibility of Kouri's legal team presenting her actions as the result of a psychotic episode, a defense that, while potentially valid, is often not well-received by juries. "Juries don't tend to like to go down those roads. They like justice," Coffindaffer remarks, highlighting the challenges of such a defense.

The episode also touches upon the actions of Kouri Richins within the prison system, including her attempts to manipulate situations from behind bars. This behavior, coupled with the premeditation suggested by the case details, paints a picture of a deeply troubled individual. The discovery of letters in her prison cell, which she claims are part of a book manuscript, could be used to bolster a defense centered on mental illness.

However, as Coffindaffer points out, the calculated nature of the alleged poisoning contradicts the typical characteristics of a psychotic episode, which are often spontaneous and violent. This discrepancy raises doubts about the viability of a mental health defense. "It would be the longest psychotic episode on record," she quips, underscoring the complexity of the case.

The podcast episode ends with a thought-provoking discussion on the future of the case. Will Kouri Richins' defense team be able to construct a compelling argument based on her mental health, or will the evidence of premeditation and manipulation overshadow any attempts to paint her actions as the result of a mental disorder?

As listeners are left pondering the fate of Kouri Richins and the tragic death of Eric Richins, one question lingers: In the intricate dance of law and psychology, where does the line between mental illness and calculated murder blur? The case of Kouri and Eric Richins, as explored in "Hidden Killers," serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and tragedies that can arise when love, trust, and mental health collide in the most devastating ways.

  • Kouri Richins: Prescription Peril or Psychopathic Play?
Kouri Richins, the children's book author facing murder charges after her husband's fentanyl overdose, finds herself entangled in a web of pharmaceutical confusion. The discovery of her antipsychotic medication, Seroquel, in his system alongside the deadly fentanyl raises a chilling question: could this be a calculated act or a tragic twist in a troubled marriage?

Shavaun Scott, a psychotherapist and author, sheds light on the complexities of the situation. Her analysis paints a grim picture for Kouri's defense. Seroquel, while not considered recreational, lacks the telltale signs of an overdose – making the argument of Eric, the deceased husband, taking it voluntarily rather weak. The massive fentanyl dose further bolsters the prosecution's case, casting Seroquel as an insignificant player in the fatal drama.

But the intrigue runs deeper. Could Kouri's own prescription medication be a pawn in a desperate defense game? Scott suggests exploring the possibility of a psychotic break, medication mismanagement, or even a deliberate concoction to paint a picture of mental instability. Yet, the medical records loom large, threatening to expose any discrepancies and weaken this fragile defense.

The talk show appearances, where Kouri appeared composed and articulate, further challenge the "psychotic break" narrative. Her calm demeanor throws a wrench in the defense strategy, leaving them grasping for straws in a sea of suspicion.

So, where does this leave Kouri Richins? Is she a cunning killer disguised by prescriptions, or a grieving widow caught in a tragic pharmaceutical storm? While the court will ultimately decide her fate, the lingering questions remain: was Seroquel a mere bystander, a desperate ploy, or a calculated clue in a chilling game of deceit?

Only time will tell if Kouri Richins, the author of children's stories, will find herself writing a new chapter in her own life – one of redemption or of a chilling truth too dark to escape.

  • Shocking revelations have emerged in the case of Eric Richins, a Utah man allegedly poisoned to death by his wife, Kouri Richins, in March 2022. Unsealed search warrants have shed new light on the circumstances surrounding Eric's tragic demise, uncovering disturbing details about the events leading up to his death.

Kouri Richins, 33, faces grave charges of aggravated murder and drug possession after she was accused of killing her husband, Eric, with illicit fentanyl in their Kamas, Utah, residence. Eric, who had been married to Kouri for nine years and shared three children with her, tragically lost his life on March 3, 2022.

The recently unsealed search warrants reveal unsettling findings that raise questions about the circumstances of Eric's death. According to a Summit County detective's report, it was discovered that Eric had a small amount of Quetiapine (brand name SEROQUEL) in his stomach contents at the time of his death. The alarming aspect was that Eric did not possess a prescription for Quetiapine, but his wife did, and the pills were readily available in their home.

Quetiapine is classified as an antipsychotic medication used to treat various mental health conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It acts by balancing the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. However, the medication is known to carry a range of potentially dangerous side effects, such as hyperglycemia, fever, stroke, pain, seizures, and more.

Prosecutors in the case have suggested that Eric's murder may have been financially motivated, revealing a troubling backdrop to the tragic events. According to court documents, the couple had been embroiled in financial disagreements, particularly related to Kouri's desire to acquire a $2 million mansion that was under construction at the time. Her plan was to purchase the property, renovate it, and then sell it for a profit.

However, Eric believed the mansion's price was exorbitant, a sentiment that his family conveyed to investigators. Additionally, Kouri had taken out four different life insurance policies on Eric's life between 2015 and 2017, totaling more than $1.9 million. Notably, on January 1, 2022, just months before Eric's tragic death, Kouri clandestinely altered the beneficiary of a $2 million life insurance policy, making herself the recipient without Eric's authorization.

Before his death, Eric had removed Kouri from his will and designated his sister as the new beneficiary, a move that suggested he had concerns about his safety. His family informed authorities that he had feared for his life, citing previous incidents where Kouri allegedly attempted to poison him, once several years ago in Greece and again on Valentine's Day 2022.

Following Eric's untimely death, Kouri authored a children's book titled "Are You With Me?" This book, listed on Amazon for $14.99, is described as "a must-read for any child who has experienced the pain of loss, and for parents who want to provide their children with the emotional support they need to heal and grow."

The unsealed search warrants have added a new layer of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings in this high-profile case. Eric Richins' tragic death continues to be a subject of intense scrutiny, as investigators delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding his alleged poisoning and the subsequent legal actions against his wife, Kouri Richins.
