  • Ever wondered why Tony Soprano’s therapist stuck with him? Why Fleabag is obsessed with sex or why Walter White is always in his underpants? ‘Shrink the Box’ is where actor comedian Ben Bailey Smith and psychotherapist Sasha Bates put their favourite fictional characters such as Shiv from Succession, Omar from the Wire and Ross from Friends on the couch to analyse why their behaviour causes them so much drama. Sasha and Ben explore why these characters make certain decisions, what would happen if they made different ones and what we can learn from their mistakes. The perfect combination of psychology, self-help and the best TV since the birth of the box-set.

  • Remember when Bill Gates tried to vaccinate the world against the coronavirus in order to microchip us all? Or was the World Health Organisation trying to alter our DNA? Or make us infertile to control the global population? Whatever the explanation, misinformation and conspiracy theories around the covid vaccine was a huge part of the global pandemic.

In the last episode on the season, the boys are joined by James O’Brien, LBC host extraordinaire, to enter the mirky world of anti-vaxxers.

Jol and the two James’ chart the origins of the anti-vax movement, and discuss how and why wild conspiracy theories flourished during the coronavirus pandemic. James O’Brien also reflects on the state of the nation, giving his takes on Boris, democracy in general, and, surprisingly how he shouldn’t be bothered private members’ clubs.

James O’Brien can be heard on LBC every weekday from 10-1. He is the author of the books ‘How Not To Be Wrong’ and ‘How To Be Right’.

  • With Halloween just around the corner, we here at New Con HQ are turning our attention to the world of psychic mediums. But the psychic listeners among you already knew that, didn’t you? In a way there’s no point us telling you what’s in the episode because you already know, but we’ll oblige for the non-believers.

The boys are joined by comedian and supernatural on-the-fencer Rachel Fairburn, to discuss the $2bn psychic medium industry. Is ‘Big Medium’ a thing? Are psychics ripping us off? Or is there genuinely something to all of this?

Strap yourselves in for a spooky episode, complete with a flash of psychicness from James, an attempted tarot card reading, and the story of a psychic predicting Rachel’s career path.

Rachel Fairburn is a comedian and co-host of the smash hit serial killer podcast All Killa No Filla. Her new supernatural podcast Ghoul Guide is out on 31st October.

  • In June this year one of the world’s most famous musicians headlined Glastonbury. It was hailed as a history-making set, spanned nearly three hours, and featured iconic Beatles songs, massive pyrotechnics, and guest performers. The organisers of Glastonbury will have you believe this man was Paul McCartney, but was it really?

For over 50 years there has been speculation that the real Paul McCartney died in a car crash and was replaced by a lookalike, and that we have this stand-in Paul to thank for everything since 1966. Comedian, broadcaster, and lifelong Beatles fan Deborah Frances-White joins James and Jol this week to explore this bizarre conspiracy.

Expect your classic stoner questions, from what do you see when you hold a mirror up to the cover of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, to what ‘Revolution 9’ sounds like played backwards. No Beatle-shaped stone is left unturned, as we decided whether it really was Macca who graced that stage so masterfully at Glastonbury.

Deborah Frances-White is the host of the hugely successful The Guilty Feminist podcast.

  • It’s a *Special Topical Episode* this week, as we look at whether Kwasi Kwarteng’s recent mini-budget was done to specifically tank the British economy and make millions for the hedge funds. We know that Kwarteng sipped champagne with various hedge fund managers after his now infamous announcements, which begs the question, were the Tories in bed with the hedge funds all along?

To help unpack this fiscal dilemma, James and Jol are joined by economist, journalist, and all round clever clogs Duncan Weldon, formerly of The Bank of England, The Economist, and BBC’s Newsnight.

And if you’re confused as to why the Bank of England had to intervene to clear up the government’s mess, why the markets completely lost faith in Kwarteng’s vision, or why the British economy has become 'The Vibes Economy', then this is the episode for you.

Duncan’s book ‘Two Hundred Years of Muddling Through: The surprising story of Britain's economy from boom to bust and back again’ is out now, and you can subscribe to his ‘Value Added’ Substack now.

  • According to some of the religious right, gays want to, among other heinous things, recruit children, dismantle the institutions of family and marriage, and force the entertainment industry and courts systems to do their bidding. Not only this, but they’ve ensnared and tricked straight allies into achieving these aims. Who knew!? The gays, they knew.

To find out if there really is a gay agenda, James and Jol are this week joined by Scottish comedian Larry Dean. Larry is used to hearing all sorts of conspiracy theories from Glaswegian taxi drivers, so is perfectly placed to dispel fact from fiction.

And as the only straight person in this week’s episode, Jol is forced to go all meta, and tackle the question of whether this episode itself is part of the gay agenda. That’s for you to decide.

Larry Dean is an award-winning comedian and writer, whose latest show ‘Fudnut’ was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award at this year’s Fringe Festival.

  • If witty World War II songs are to be believed (and why wouldn’t they be) then Adolf Hitler, one of the twentieth century’s most evil people, spent his entire life wandering around with only one testicle. Indeed, Heinrich Himmler suffered the same fate, Hermann Göring had the full set, but shrunken. And, as the song goes, “Poor old Goebbels had no balls at all!”

But were these high-ranking Nazis really lacking in the testicle department, or were British troops just making up a cock and bull story?

This week James and Jol are joined by Richard Herring, a man perfectly placed to answer this question. Richard was diagnosed with testicular cancer back in 2021, and has been pondering everything ball-related since. He’s even toured shows called ‘Talking Cock’ and ‘Hitler Moustache’, so this episode feels like the logical conclusion of Richard’s journey.

Expect a lot of ball chat, some heart-warming group singing, and a veer off into the Richard’s part in the creation of comedy character Alan Partridge.

Richard’s new book ‘Can I Have My Ball Back: A Memoir of Masculinity, Mortality and My Right Testicle’ is published on October 20th.

  • What links Adele, the Nazis, and Yorkshire theme park Lightwater Valley? That’s right, it’s hollow Earth theory! The Earth’s core is 2,900km below ground, and we humans have only ever dug 12.2km down. So beyond some scientists guessing what’s down there (and what do they know, really) we are none the wiser about what sits at the centre of our world.

James and Jol are this week joined by comedian, poet and podcaster Rob Auton, to dig down into hollow earth theory. Inspired by a ride on ‘The Rat’ at the aforementioned Lightwater Valley, Rob’s been fascinated by the concept of hollow earth theory since childhood/for at least one whole week.

The boys unearth the intricacies of this, on the surface, strange theory, and discuss what could really be down there: An advanced race? A sun? Laser quest!?

Rob Auton brings his brand new show, The Crowd Show, to venues nationwide from 1st October as part of his biggest UK tour to date. More info and tickets available at robauton.co.uk

  • This week’s episode asks a question that over a quarter of Americans believe to be true. That’s right, 1 in 4 Americans believe that Big Pharma; a cabal of evil corporations, dodgy physicians and sneaky regulators, has actually found a cure for cancer, but is keeping schtum to make money. But is this really true?To separate the truth from the nonsense, this week James and Jol are joined by science writer and broadcaster Kat Arney. Kat is perfectly placed to settle the score on Big Pharma, having worked at Cancer Research UK for 12 years. In a wide-ranging conversation that covers bleach, dyslexic mice, and eye-watering sums of money, James, Jol and Kat tackle Big Pharma head on, leaving no conspiracy-shaped stone unturned.Kat Arney is the author of Rebel Cell: Cancer, Evolution and the Science of Life. This episode was recorded before the announcement of the passing of HRH Elizabeth II.Once a week with us not enough? • The British Establishment: benevolent leaders who want the very best for their subjects? Or egotistical, power-hungry maniacs who want nothing more than status and authority? This is what James and Jol are asking in this week’s episode. (No points awarded for guessing Jol’s point of view…)

And who better to join them than premier columnist Marina Hyde, who’s been more or less seeking the answer to this very question in her Guardian articles over the past 20 years.

Expect to hear Marina’s withering takes on Boris Johnson, the Westminster Bubble, the government’s response to Covid, and much more.

  • After Jimmy Savile’s death in 2011, reports began to emerge that he had sexually abused hundreds of people throughout his life. Savile had been one of the country’s best-known entertainers, a darling of the BBC, commanding audiences of millions on shows like Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It. Surely his criminal activities were known by those close to him? Just how deep did the cover up run?

James and Jol are this week joined by journalist Meirion Jones, who’s Newsnight investigation into the suspected paedophilic crimes of Savile was famously dropped at the 11th hour, not long after Savile’s death. He also happens to be James’s boss.

Meirion reveals who at the BBC knew what at the height of Savile’s fame, and opens up about the Newsnight scandal that engulfed the BBC in 2011, resulting in Meirion becoming the news rather than just reporting on it.

Meirion Jones is the editor of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and features in the Netflix documentary Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story.

  • Whilst James and Jol perspire in London's second heatwave, now seems like the perfect time to revisit Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 claim that he can’t sweat. And joining the boys this week to dispel fiction from fact is pop sensation Rebecca Lucy Taylor, AKA Self Esteem.

James, Jol and Self Esteem pick apart Prince Andrew’s claim that an overdose of adrenaline from the Falkland’s War means that he is unable to sweat. Is the Duke of York actually incapable of crying from his armpits, or is this a royal conspiracy? Expect to hear Self Esteem’s views on male privilege, her invitation to the Platinum Jubilee, and of course, sweating.

Self Esteem’s critically-acclaimed album Prioritise Pleasure has recently been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, and tickets to her tour are available from https://www.selfesteem.love/

  • As Alex Jones coughs up nearly $50m for defamation of the parents of Sandy Hook victim Jesse Lewes, the time is right for James, Jol and their guest Paul Chowdhry to dip their toe into the fetid waters of 'crisis actors', school shootings and the catch all conspiracy hell that is Infowars.

Expect to hear how Jones became a multi-millionaire conspiracy theorist, what happened in his trial, and Paul's really mean impression of the reddest man in broadcasting. And have you ever wondered how conspiracy theories spread on tiktok? We have thoughts...

  • The UK’s largest, best funded, and most sinister spy agency, GCHQ are tasked with gathering information and keeping the UK’s communications safe. So obviously Jol and James are asking… Can GCHQ see my nudes? (never shying away from the important questions - ed)

Fittingly, James and Jol are joined this week by Hannah Khalique-Brown, an actor who has played a fledgling GCHQ coder on screen AND written an essay on conspiracy theories.

Regular listeners will be unsurprised to learn that James is no stranger to the work of GCHQ… after working at Wikileaks and then on the NSA files leaked to the Guardian by Edward Snowden many would be concerned if he wasn’t on a GCHQ watch list.

Expect to hear in this episode how GCHQ spyware is named after Smurfs, how James got top secret files out of the UK after British spies made them destroy the copies they had in the UK, and extracts from Hannah’s university essay on… conspiracy theories.

Hannah stars as Saara Parvin in Channel 4’s new cyber warfare drama, The Undeclared War, making her the perfect guest to discuss the supposed snooping powers of GCHQ.

  • Bruce Lee – legendary martial artist, actor and director died on 20 July 1973 at the age of 32 in the middle of filming. Many believe he died in mysterious circumstances.

Some believe he was killed by Chinese gangsters, others that he was assassinated by Shaolin monks and some say that he was poisoned to death.

But one popular theory is that he was killed by the One-Inch Punch (also known as Dim Mak or the Touch of Death).

What is it? Is it possible? And is this what offed Mr Lee at such a young age?

Jolyon Rubenstein, James Ball and their special guest Sanjeev Bhaskar explore how you train to deploy such a punch, how it has endured in popular culture (‘Kill Bill’ anyone?) and why Bruce Lee’s family seem particularly cursed.

  • Have you ever noticed how women’s clothes have very few if any pockets?

Is it the fault of ‘big handbag’? The patriarchy? Or do women simply not need to carry things?

In 1954, Christian Dior declared that “Men have pockets to keep things in, women for decoration” but what’s decorative about a pocket? And why has nothing much changed in 70 years?

  • Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone in killing JFK? The most widely believed conspiracy theory in America, and the one you've all been waiting for!

Actor, writer, and director David Schneider joins James and Jol to dissect the countless conspiracies surrounding the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. You may know David from such TV classics as The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge. Plus, Mission: Impossible, 28 Days Later and The Death of Stalin.

Believers of this conspiracy claim the involvement of the CIA, the Mafia, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, the KGB, or some combination of these. In fact, doubters of the lone gunman theory have accused 42 groups, 82 assassins and 214 people of being involved in the assassination.

Why is this theory so widely believed, and acceptably so? If you believe this one, are you in danger or believing something more radical? And more importantly, why is the word ‘grassy knoll’ so funny?!
