חוקרי המשטרה שהגיעו לבית משפחת אבו ג'ליל בשפרעם בבוקר ה-1 במאי 2016 מצאו זירת פשע מחרידה: מרוות אבו ג'ליל, אם לארבעה ילדים, שכבה ללא רוח חיים בשלולית דם בכניסה לחדר השינה בקומה השנייה, כשבגופה סימני דקירה רבים. הילדים שלה שהיו עדים לרצח הצביעו על האדם שעשה זאת: אשרף תחימר, השכן הבעייתי, שפרץ לבית וניסה לגנוב את קונסולת האקסבוקס אך נתפס. אשרף נעצר, ומואשם בפשע הנתעב. התיק נראה סגור מכל הכיוונים, אפילו הנעליים שלו נמצאו בזירה.
