  • Feed drop from The Deep Culture podcast from the Japan Intercultural Institute. These episodes will help you understand culture shock and the disorientation that happens during the immigrant experience.

In this episode, Joseph and Yvonne discuss the “Oz Moment”—the experience of wonder and surprise that comes from first experiencing the sights, sounds and sensations in a foreign place. This episode explores the mental processes that lead to Oz Moment experiences. We hear from Ayako, who had a life-changing experience when she stepped into the restroom at LAX. Oz moments teach us a lot about how our mind works when we have intercultural experiences.

  • We are taking a break from our regularly scheduled episodes.

This week I will be presenting a signature talk about my forthcoming book, "Come Home to Yourself: An Immigrant Experience Decoding America, Fall 2024" at the London Intercultural Institute, EmpowerHer 2024. March 7-8, 2004. The event will be streamed live on LinkedIn.

Registration for Zoom closes today., March 6. I will present at 1:15 p.m. EST.

Feed Drop: Deep Culture Podast, Episode 5.

In this episode, hosts Yvonne van der Pol and Joseph Shaules reflect on a question they were asked during a Brain, Mind and Culture Masterclass: Where is culture in the brain? They say that there is no specific location for culture in the brain. To understand the way that culture shapes our minds, we need to remember: three brains, two minds, and one person. The three brains refer to brain structures that reflect our evolutionary past—the “reptile brain”, the “mammalian brain” and the “primate brain”. The two minds refers to the intuitive (fast thinking-pattern based) mind and the attentive (slow-thinking analytic). Despite the complexity of these cognitive systems, we experience it all simply as the self – one person. Yvonne tells a story of cross-cultural coaching—a German who feels that Dutch people interrupt too much! While the difference may be cultural, the irritation he felt was in his whole body!

  • This week we are taking a break from our regularly scheduled interviews.

This podcast - Deep Culture podcast from the Japan Intercultural Institute by Dr. Joseph Shaules and team has helped me under the disorientation that one experiences after moving to a foreign country. I am sharing a few episodes with you because I think it will help you understand your own immigrant experience.

In season 1, episode 4 of the Deep Culture podcast, Yvonne and Joseph dive deep into talk about culture from the brain-mind-science perspective. They share their excitement about new areas of research, such as cultural neuroscience, which is revolutionizing our understanding of culture and the mind. They discuss the importance of cultural “A-ha” moments of insight—these remind us the intercultural experiences touch us at deep levels of the self, and help us grow.

  • About Kaara and family: We have been together for 21 years and happily married for 16 years! We have two energetic kids ages 7 and 10. Born and raised in the Caribbean (Jamaica and Trinidad), we now call Atlanta GA “home.” As you can probably tell, we are passionate about marriages and helping couples realize their full potential in their relationships. Together, we bring over 20 years of professional experience combined with a strong spiritual background in our work with couples. Kaara is a licensed clinical social work specializing in trauma and couples. Kaara is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jared graduated from Duke University School of Medicine and obtained a dual degree in medicine and Masters in Psychology. Jared went on to complete his Residency and Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. Today Jared is a practicing Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist and Kaara has a private practice where she sees couples remotely via tele-therapy. Both are trained to provide individual and couples therapy and use various therapeutic models such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (for couples) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

About Authentic Marriages: We are Jared and Kaara, the co-founders of Authentic Marriages, a faith-based, relationship ministry, designed to promote emotionally and spiritually healthy marriages globally. Jared is a double boarded, licensed Adult, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and Relationship Coach. Kaara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Relationship Coach with experience in individual and couples therapy with a specialization in healing emotional trauma. Together we bring over 20 years of combined professional experience in the mental health field working with individuals, families and couples using evidenced-based interventions.

In our society it is not uncommon to find couples that are secretly suffering in unhappy marriages. Pride, fear of rejection and public humiliation prevents us from speaking our truth in an authentic way. Discussing challenges in marital relationships openly and honestly is often avoided. This subculture unintentionally creates an unsafe environment for couples to be vulnerable with friends, family and even those in the church! It leaves couples alienated and left to suffer silently in their marriages. When you live a lie or present a false narrative of your marriage, you inherently have an inauthentic marriage. This adds even more stress to an already overwhelming situation.

Here at Authentic Marriages we strive to keep it REAL! Simply speaking, nothing is off limits! We don’t want to present a fairytale version of marriage but rather a realistic view of the blessings and challenges that every marriage may face. We hope to discuss topics that touch the core of people’s marriages even if it is difficult or uncomfortable to engage. Our goal is to equip couples with the tools needed to help their marriage become happy, healthy and holy.
