  • Welcome to another coaching episode! Today, I'm speaking with Mystral, a massage therapist and energy worker out of New York City. Her service-based business is growing well, but an idea for a product-based business naturally spun off from it that she wants to explore. She wants to launch a tea business with as few mistakes as possible.

First we start with ideation, then making the product, and then moving on to branding. Each step builds up to the next. We start by honing in on what she's actually going to sell, and then go over what it costs to make the product. From there, we take a look at how to price and position her teas to make sure she's selling for not only a profit, but also to the right people.

I applaud Mystral for seeking out support in these early stages of her product-based business to give her the fast-track to success. That’s what the Product Boss is all about: giving you the tools you need to avoid the mistakes most product business owners make!

  • After 20 years of coaching product bosses and running my own product businesses, I can immediately recognize certain gaps and missteps that happen in almost every new business. Recently, I thought of it in a different way: What kind of checklist would I put together if I were starting a new product business today? What steps would I take, and in what order, to make sure that I’m creating a foundation in my product business to get in front of my customers and make consistent sales from?

That’s why I created the Ultimate Checklist For Building Your Dream Product Based Business which takes this framework and narrows in on the four key areas you need to focus on nailing to build the solid foundations of your business.

In this episode, I review my 7-step framework that I would use to start a product-based business and also give you a clear roadmap of the four key areas you need to nail to start building the dream business you deserve.

  • Fresh from Shark Tank, Inner Circle Masterminder Aleah Montague joins the show today for a coaching session. Her business, “Meat the Mushroom,” is taking off. How can she keep up with skyrocketing demand, while sustainably scaling up? Tune in to find out.

First, we talk about the emotional and mindset aspect. When you start to see an increased demand and your sales start to increase so quickly, while it’s definitely a time for celebration, there’s also plenty of worry, stress, and the unknown. The stakes have suddenly become much higher and there are a lot of super important decisions that need to be made- and fast. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed. That’s why I’m so glad Aleah is in our Mastermind so we can surround her with advice and support.

Then we dive into the nitty-gritty. We spend a lot of time mapping out an org chart and defining and naming roles. The best part about being a product boss is that you get to create your own role based on what you are good at and what you like to do- your “zone of genius.”

As a coach, it’s so rewarding to see the success and support a Masterminder who has hit a new level in their business. Join me in celebrating Aleah and Meat the Mushroom while discovering what you can learn from her growth and what to do to prepare for when your big day comes!

  • Plateaus in product-based business can be good or bad, depending on different factors. In this episode, we talk about why it's important to do an honest assessment of your business to figure out if you’re in a much-needed plateau or if you should be pushing for more growth immediately.

Not every year is meant to have massive quantum leaps in growth– no matter how much we’d love if that was the case! Some years are meant for stabilization. After all, the foundation of your product-business can actually crack and start to fail if you grow too quickly in a short period of time. Sometimes you need to shift from growth mode to maintenance mode and re-assessing your systems and operations to ensure your business is ready to successfully grow to that next level.

Tune into this episode to learn how to figure out the difference between good plateaus vs. bad plateaus. Understanding them can make all the difference in achieving the lifestyle you’ve envisioned for yourself and taking your business to that next revenue level!

  • Have you thought about selling your products on TikTok? In this episode, we have a TikTok insider walk us through setting up a TikTok Store and using its affiliate program.

The first thing you should know about getting a TikTok Store (not to be confused with TikTok Business) is that it can be quick and easy. It usually only takes a day or two for your TikTok store account to be approved and go live. Then you can simply link the Shopify account you already use to sell your products. TikTok will sync with your Shopify inventory on an ongoing basis. You also have the option to manually input your products to your TikTok store natively.

Now let’s talk money. TikTok charges 2% plus thirty cents on transactions. The other money item: You can pay independent creators to market your products. There are two ways to do this: Shop Plan and Targeted Plan. In Shop Plan, you upload your product to the TikTok affiliate marketplace and then affiliates (TikTokers who have atleast 5,000 followers) can choose a product to market for you based on a sales-only commission. Targeted Plan is a little more involved– you can evaluate creators’ target audiences, success rate, etc., then choose one based on how well you think they fit your product.

If you want to tap into the hot TikTok market, this episode is a can’t miss!

  • Welcome, Product Bosses! In today’s exciting episode, we’re thrilled to share a segment from our guest appearance on the How to Sell Your Stuff on Etsy podcast, hosted by the fantastic Lizzie Smiley. Our alignment with Lizzie is rooted in our shared passion for empowering women to live their dream lives, free from career and financial constraints. This is the driving force behind our entrepreneurial ventures, where the freedom of time and money reigns supreme.

This discussion with Lizzie is particularly insightful, especially considering her recent experience of having her shop unexpectedly shut down on the Etsy platform. This highlights the risks of relying on a single platform and underscores the critical saying, "You can't build on borrowed land." We delve into the nitty-gritty of navigating the Etsy terrain, exploring strategies to enhance your average order value—a skill that’s beneficial across all platforms.

We also dive into the dangers of putting all your eggs in one basket, or in this case, one sales channel. The vulnerability of depending solely on a single channel is a risk too great to ignore. We also share an invaluable tip on growing your email list, a strategy not just for Etsy sellers but for all entrepreneurs looking to expand their reach. So, join us as we unpack these essential strategies to ensure your business remains resilient and thriving, irrespective of the platform.
