Why did Henry VIII have two wives executed? We can learn a lot about the circumstances which led to the executions of Anne Boleyn and, 6 years later, her cousin Catherine Howard, by comparing and contrasting the two. Gareth Russell explores the events surrounding the downfall of each of the ill-fated Queens of Henry VIII in this new perspective on a familiar story and reveals a surprising fact...that Henry wrote a play about Anne Boleyn's "sexual misdemeanors" before her trial!

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Heather Darsie, author of a breakthrough biography of Henry VIII’s 4th wife, ‘Anna, Duchess of Cleves: The King’s ‘Beloved Sister’’. Heather has been able to look at Anna’s story, and that of her failed marriage to Henry VIII in a different, and all the more revealing context, explaining in a much more convincing way the reasons behind the failed marriage. You’ll get a taste of that chat in this short extract and if you enjoy it and want to see more you can find the link to the full interview on YouTube by clicking here.
