The world rallied around Ukrainians suffering at the hands of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While countless people are trying to flee Ukraine for safety, many black people are help at borders and refused entry into neighbouring countries, such as Poland. Many black people are denied assistance and refused entry onto trains.
While this is going on, major western media outfits are reporting on the war with overt racism.
This begs the question - Should black people be in solidarity with Ukrainians while Ukrainians are being overtly and dangerously racist towards black people stuck in Ukraine.
My guest Athi-nangamso Nkopo joins me to discuss this. -
The alcohol industry, and the beer economy, in particular, is an incredibly complex and important value chain that has been adversely impacted by the pandemic and the consequent alcohol bans. The industry is in recovery mode and the budget speech laying out the excise increases on the industry plays an important role in that recovery story.
In this episode, I speak to Economist and Excise Specialist at South African Breweries, Fatsani Banda about Minister Enoch Godogwana's recent budget speech to determine the impact it will have on the industry, but also to get an understanding from Fatsani about the Beer Economy.
This episode has been sponsored by the South African Breweries. -

The four short-listed candidates for the position of our next Chief Justice of the Constitional Court will be interviewed at the start of February. They are; Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Judge President Mandisa Maya, and Judge President Dustan Mlambo.
This is clearly a very important position to hold in the State, but what powers, exactly, does a Chief Justice have? How are they appointed? Should we, as ordinary citizens, get to vote for the Chief Justice?
I explore these questions on this episode with my guest Dan Mafora of CASAC. Dan is also a teaching assistant at the University of Cape Town and a former clerk of the Constitutional Court.

Minister Lindiwe Sisulu wrote an opinion piece criticising (read: insulting) the judiciary as judges. Feeling aggrieved by this, Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo called a press briefing where he condemned Minister Sisulu and asked her to retract her statement and apologise.
What did Lindiwe Sisulu say? What is at play? Should ACJ Zondo respond to her in the way he has, or at all?

I have launched a new series within the Oliver Dickson Podcast called State Capture Unpacked. This will focus on breaking down, in great detail, what is within the long-awaited State Capture Commission of Inquiry Report (State Capture Report) compiled by Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. We will also debate and discuss, as the weeks and months go by, some of the likely court action that will emanate from the report.
In Episode 1 of this series, I speak to renowned academic, Dr Sithembile Mbete about how to go about reading part 1 of this 874-page long report. -
As we come to the close of the annual 16 days of activism against women and children abuse campaign in South Africa, I reached to 2 monumental activists in fighting against gender-based violence.
Josina Machel, the daughter, and Graca Machel and Samora (stepdaughter to Nelson Mandela, is a globally recognised activist against GBV. Inspired by her own experience with gender-based violence, Josina started an organisation called Kukhuka to help women who are survivors of GBV.
Craig Wilkinson, the founder of Father A Nation has traveled the length and breadth of South Africa talking to men from all walks of life about GBV with the aim to make them better men. Craig works with big brands with a major reach like SAB's Carling Black Label on their flagship campaign - No Excuse.

In 2020, newcomer political party, African Transformation Movement (ATM) raised a motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa that didn't take place due to resulting court action after the speaker of parliament rejected a request for a secret ballot vote by the ATM.
The Supreme Court of Appeal found in favour of the ATM and ordered the speaker to freshly consider a request for a secret ballot vote.
Will a vote of no confidence in Ramaphosa succeed? Should it succeed? Will this solve the governance crisis?
I am joined by Vuyolwethu Zungula, the president of the ATM to speak about his motion of no confidence. -
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that he has put together a task team to look into mandatory vaccinations as the country battles with a new and more contagious COVID-19 variant, Omicron. With rising daily infections, there is a desperation to get as many citizens as possible vaccinated but uptake has slowed down with less than 35% of the population vaccinated.
Are mandatory vaccinations constitutional? Should they be implemented? What would be the legal route and implications? Would they work?

On the day of the passing of former apartheid president, FW de Klek, his family issued a pre-recorded apology that de Klerk recorded before passing, now dubbed "the death bed apology". In it, de Klerk apologised for apartheid, as he has done many times before. In this episode, I explore why we should reject FW de Klerk's apology. Joining me on this episode is well known South African lawyer, Adv Kameel Premhid
