Through 2009, police would continue to unearth a mass grave along the western edge of Albuquerque.
Following the discovery of eleven female bodies, investigators set out to identify the remains. The first four victims - Victoria Chavez, Michelle Valdez, Cinnamon Elks, and Julie Nieto - would be identified within the first month or so. They were all young women that had lived in the region and had gone missing between 2004 and 2005 (who had prior histories of sex work and drug use).
However, the remaining seven victims would be much harder to ID. It took several months for investigators to piece together the details of these women's tragic lives, but the exact circumstances of their disappearances/murders would be hard to grasp. Years later, police continue to have many questions about these women, and who had targeted them...

In the decade since eleven bodies were found in Albuquerque, a task force has worked to identify the mysterious West Mesa Bone Collector.
The 118th Street Task Force is a combination of officers from Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and the FBI. Together, they have worked exhaustively to identify and apprehend the unknown killer of eleven women, who murdered and buried them over a roughly two-year period between 2003 and 2005.
Over the past ten years, detectives have thoroughly investigated numerous suspects (including two that are still suspected of involvement today), looked into thousands of tips, and have even tentatively tied other missing women to the same crime spree. Yet, despite their best intentions, police have been unable to close the case dubbed the "118th Street Homicides."

On February 3rd, 1980, the riot at the New Mexico State Pen carried on into its second full day. Negotiations continued, but with a handful of prison guards still captive, the inmates were holding most of the leverage.
Eventually, a peace would be brokered and order would be restored to the penitentiary. The facility itself, though, was in total disarray, and the expensive cleanup effort that followed would prove costly (not only financially, but emotionally).
In the months and years that followed, the story would continue to plague the region. After-effects of the riot would be felt for years to come, and many still question certain aspects of it...

On December 20th, 1968, two teenagers - David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen - were going out on their first date. The two were natives to the Vallejo area of California, and spent their evening driving around, before settling into a cozy lover's lane along Lake Herman Road. There, they were shot and killed by an unknown assailant.
For months, the investigation into the shooting of David and Betty faltered... until a similar crime took place a handful of miles away.
When Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau were shot at Vallejo's Blue Rock Springs Park on July 4th, 1969 - and a mysterious individual called police dispatchers to claim credit just minutes later - it officially kicked off one of America's most infamous criminal investigations...

Three weeks after the Fourth of July shooting incident at Blue Rock Springs Park - in Vallejo, California - a mysterious series of letters were received by publications in San Francisco's Bay Area. The writer offered up a three-part cipher, which supposedly contained the identify of the shooter.
As the media began to pick apart these cryptograms, another couple of crimes seem to continue the killer's crime spree. First, a young couple is brutally attacked at Napa County's scenic Lake Berryessa in September of 1969; then, a San Francisco cab driver is randomly targeted just weeks later, in October.
The writer of the original letters - who dubbed himself "The Zodiac" - takes credit for all of these murders. But then he begins to wage a war of terror on the Bay Area itself...

Between December of 1968 and October of 1969, four separate attacks left the San Francisco Bay Area shaking. Two attacks happened in the area of Vallejo, another took place along scenic Lake Berryessa, and the final incident took place in San Francisco itself - in the wealthy neighborhood of Presidio Heights.
A madman, who referred to himself as "The Zodiac," began corresponding with the media at around the same time. He took credit for the attacks, and - as the attacks progressed - he became more confident and began threatening police, journalists, and even school-children.
Throughout the years, many have theorized connections to this mysterious killer: other possible crimes, noted suspects, etc. But the many mysteries of the Zodiac killer continues to linger...

In March of 1990, a pair of twins - named Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook - disappeared from their hometown of Augusta, GA.
By all indications, they were just a regular couple of teenagers. They came from a large immediate family, but spent most of their time at home: they sang along to songs on the radio, spent most of their free time lounging around in front of the television, and attended church every Sunday.
But on one particular Sunday - March 18th, 1990 - the twins walked through the neighborhood, hoping to collect bus fare from their godfather. They visited their godfather, then their cousin, and finally their sister, before stopping by a convenience store to buy some snacks. When they left the store, they were never seen again.
I am joined by the younger sister of the twins, Shanta Sturgis, as well as the hosts of the podcast The Fall Line.

On the approximate date of April 8th, 1991, the family of missing teenagers Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook were met by one of the investigators handling their case. The family was told that because their 17th birthday had come-and-gone, that the girls - wherever they were - could no longer be forced to return home.
So the family had to put their faith in a higher power to help their missing relatives return home, because law enforcement had no interest in finding them. Then, just two years after this meeting, one of the police officials contacted NCMEC - the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children - and told them that the girls had been found.
Which is it? Were they still missing, or had they been found?
This would just be the beginning of a three-decades-in-the-making mystery, which has consumed the time and effort of Shanta Sturgis, the twins' younger sister. To this day, she (and the rest of the twins' family) has received little-to-no help from law enforcement. I speak to her, and the makers of the Fall Line podcast, in an effort to get to the bottom of law enforcement's hesitance to speak out about this investigation.

In March of 1990, two teenagers disappeared from Augusta, Georgia. Their names are Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook. Early on, the lead detective - who handled all of Augusta's missing teenager cases - zeroed in on the theory that both girls had run away together. This theory began to look less likely with each passing day, but that didn't stop the case from being closed in 1991 and the investigation shuttered until 2013.
In the years since, police and independent investigators have had very little evidence to draw on, basing their understanding of the case on the comments made by that original lead detective. He has placed most of the blame for the case's mishandling on someone - a juvenile probation officer, who knew the family of the twins and volunteered his time.
In this episode, I speak to the sister of the twins, Shanta Sturgis, in the hopes of understanding who this juvenile probation officer was, and why the lead detective has decided to give him the majority of the blame. We also chat the current status of the case, and what you - the listener - can do to help out.

In 1982, a group of offenders began striking the Brussels area of Belgium. It began with a series of small robberies, but - by the end of the year - had progressed to full-blown murder.
Though their criminal career was still in its apparent infancy, the Brabant Killers - also known as the Brabant Gang and the Gang Of Nivelles - would go on to become Belgium's most violent and mysterious criminals. Over thirty years later, their identities and motives are still unknown.

Throughout 1982, Belgian police were concerned over a rash of strange attacks plaguing the Brussels area. All involved criminals matching the same basic descriptions, but lacked any real motive. They seemed to be the actions of a mysterious gang lashing out... but at something or someone without any real purpose.
Going into 1983, these attacks would continue. Worse, they would escalate, with the gang becoming more bold and violent throughout the year. Car jackings, robberies, murders - it seemed like there were no ethical concerns for these mysterious criminals, who would continue to act throughout 1983, before disappearing under mysterious circumstances.

Throughout 1982 and 1983, three criminals terrorized the area of Brussels. Starting off with nothing more than ski masks and a single rifle, the three quickly armed themselves with military-grade equipment and became feared for their brutal robberies.
In 1984, the Killers disappeared. The public at-large waited for the investigation to make progress, but before long, the "Mad Killers of Belgium" returned to commit their most heinous attacks yet.

On November 9th, 1985, the Brabant Killers struck for the last time. This attack - which was the bloodiest yet - resulted in eight people dead, seven others injured, and a criminal investigation that was plagued from the very beginning.
The Brabant Killers happened to attack in the middle of a very tumultuous time for Belgium. Terrorist organizations were rising up during that time period, from different sides of the political spectrum. The Westland New Post were right-wing extremists, lead by Paul Latinus and Michel Libert... Latinus would commit suicide mysteriously in the early days of 1984, and Libert would be officially questioned by police for Brabant involvement as recently as 2014. Meanwhile, the left-leaning Communist Combatant Cells - who had bombed various targets through 1984 and 1985 - were led by a man named Pierre Carette, who would find himself behind bars at the same time the Brabant attacks ended.
As the investigation proceeded, officials began to suspect police involvement. Soon, after the mysterious murder of Juan Mendez in 1986, they found themselves on the heels of two men named Madani Bouhouche and Robert Beijer... both of whom have been suspected as Brabant Killer suspects ever since.

Following the final attack by the Brabant Killers, the police investigation struggled to find any real progress. Suspects like Madani Bouhouche and Robert Beijer came and went, with only tentative ties to extremist groups being found.
As the 1980s came to an end, trouble behind-the-scenes spelled trouble for investigators. Prosecutors were sent packing, parliamentary commissions were created and then concluded, and suspects continued to emerge. First came Phillipe de Staercke - a violent thug with a proclivity for violence - who had ties to a well-armed government official, named Jean Bultot. Then came Patrick Haemers, a well-known Belgian criminal who committed suicide in the early 1990s.
This episode also details the fledgling investigation as it progressed into the 2000s, and includes some of the more... "outlandish" theories, as well as recent updates that inspire confidence in the survivor's demands for justice.
