  • Interview - David Pepose - Space Ghost! On Sale May 1, 2024 - Artist JONATHAN LAU

David, thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast. How much research did you feel you needed diving into Space Ghost, or are you a super fanatic and needed no time to know it all?Jan, Jace, and Space Ghost proper hasn’t really had a backstory, which means you could start clean slate. Was there an inspiration that you started with to delve into building out this continuity? We’ve had Batman writers tell us they hear Kevin Conroy in their heads when writing him, do you find that Gary Owens or George Lowe pop in your head when writing Space Ghost? There’s going to be fans of Coast to Coast and Hanna Barbara, are you thinking about both audiences for this series? If Space Ghost was a song, what would it be and why?Sidewinder - First Aquaman songQueen Flash Gordon ThemeYou’re just coming off Punisher, you had a great stint on FF, could you give us a hint at what’s next for you at Marvel?
  • Interview - Ram V talks about The One Hand, Detective Comics, Rare Flavours, Dawnrunner, and more!

Ram V, we’re huge fans of yours at AIPT from The Vigil to Detective Comics, The One Hand, and your past works of course too, thank you for being on the AIPT comics podcast! You recently said on Matthew Rosenberg’s podcast you want to take time off from comics to write a novel, is there something percolating you’re itching to write and if so what genre might it be?To start, in Detective Comics Batman is currently on a hallucinatory trek in a story called An Elegy of Sand, what inspired you to take him on a trek like this? Have you gone on a trek like this yourself? The reality engine is so fascinating, how might you describe it to a reader curious about jumping on your run?I’ve read you’ve mapped out a 30-issue run ending Detective with issue #1089, are you still on target for that issue to be the finale?Dan Watters writes the backups in Detective, and he’s also your collaborator on The One Hand/The Six Fingers, do you collaborate as closely on the image comics series as much as the Detective Comics series? As an avid reader of comics, I simply love the idea of a crossover mystery that you’ve described as a mystery for the reader to solve. Surely this required a corkboard and red string all about to get just right? Then you have Creature from the Black Lagoon, also a Watters/Ram V jam, are you guys working on each of these projects similarly or does each one bring out a different work process? The oversimplification of Dawnrunner is giant mechs versus kaiju, how long has this project been percolating for you?The X-Men are relaunching this July, is there any character or X-book you’ve ever pondered taking on if you had carte blanch?

    Rapid Fire Question Round:

Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve written before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?What number am I thinking of?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?
  • To start, tell us about yourself, what’s the “once upon a time” of how you got into comics?Oni press has a long history of incredible indie projects, Rick and Morty comics, and a lot more, but I feel like things turned when Lion Forge and Oni merged in 2019, and then Hunter you became president in 2022. It was only 2 years ago you got the role, what of your day-one plan has been achieved an then what's left on the "list"?What would you say Oni Press’ mission is in comics, how do you define yourself from the pack? You currently have The CULT OF THE LAMB Kickstarter running and it’s a huge success, do you foresee using Kickstarter more going forward? It was amazing seeing the response to the news you’ll be printing NEW EC Comic, how long has this launch been in the works?I think it’s fair to say David Lynch is a hugely impactful character on our culture, especially in pop culture today, and with BARRY GIFFORD’s Night People getting an adaptation, I was curious why you zero’d in on this project for 2024?Something I think comics fans forget is the curation of a line is a ton of work, and with Oni Class of 2024 in high gear, can you talk a little bit about putting together these new ongoing series?JILL AND THE KILLERS #1—a razor-sharp teenage thriller from Olivia Cuartero-Briggs (Mary Shelley Monster Hunter) and Roberta Ingranata (Witchblade) in JanuaryCEMETERY KIDS DON’T DIE #1—a near-future descent into a virtual world with killer consequences from Zac Thompson (Hunt for the Skinwalker) and Daniel Irizarri (XINO) in FebruaryNIGHT PEOPLE #1—an uneasy odyssey into the provocative and surreal periphery of the American underworld from award-winning novelist and screenwriter Barry Gifford (Lost Highway, Wild at Heart) and writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) with artists Brian Level (Poison Ivy), Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and more in MarchAKỌGUN, BRUTALIZER OF GODS #1—a fearlessly unrelenting reinvention of the barbarian mythos from creative powerhouses Murewa Ayodele (I Am Iron Man) and Dotun Akande (Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood) in AprilHow do projects move into Oni, I’m thinking specifically of Hobtown Mysteries and your upcoming Webtoon projects. We’ve also got HOBTOWN MYSTERIES vol. 1 getting a reprint in May with a new Vol. 3 in 2025, how did this project come to be given it was originally set up at Conundrum Press?Another comic set at another publisher, COVENANT, is a WEBTOOn comic with a print run coming in April. How did this project come to be at Oni?Following that is SUBZERO out in September, are you dabbling in manga possibly in the near future? If Oni Press under your direction was a song, what would it be and why?

Interview - Barbaric team with Michael Moreci, Nathan Gooden! Out May 1st

Michael Moreci, Nathan Gooden, thanks for being on the AIPT comics podcast! We’ve heard that Born in Blood is a perfect jumping-on point for new readers! Why is that? We’re super into magic rules at AIPT. Do you have a Barbaric Bible? It’s kind of impossible not to get heavy metal vibes from this series, so I have to ask: Do you fellas listen to any particular bands to get in the headspace for Barbaric? Would it be out of line to guess Mastodon is on rotation? DeftonesFans who listen to this show and immediately rush to their comic shop have a few trade paperbacks to enjoy, but those on the fence, what has the 3+ journey been like for the characters in the story? And what has been the 3+ year journey been like for you!?Born in Blood #1 is free to retailers, and I’m so fascinated by this! Most sales are highest with a first issue, does it make you nervous making it free to retailers? As of when this recording airs, the Barbaric "Join The Horde" Crowdbuilding Campaignℱ will be available to join, is there an aspect of this campaign you’re most excited for fans to dig into?Do you have any other projects you’d like to talk about?

Max, thanks for being on the AIPT comics podcast. You’ve got Maybe Tomorrow #1 out March 13, tell us about the project, how long has it been in the works? There are some fascinating sci-fi elements in this first issue - we’re fans of the “crappy future” aesthetic here - is this a world you think we’ll live in someday, would you want to live in it?To get a sense of what readers are in for, what sort of sci-fi do you enjoy and what might have inspired this story?Tell us about how you linked with Daniel Caval on art. What’s your process together like? There’s a definite level of anxiety to the narrative, how important was it to get the reader’s anxiety up along with the characters? It’s always interesting seeing a character deal with anxiety in a book and thinking “well that’s not how I handle it?” Did you imbue your characters with any of your own rituals and coping mechanisms? As a first-time comics creator, can you walk us through what it took to get this book on the stands?I’m always curious about titles, was Maybe Tomorrow always the title to this work?If Maybe Tomorrow was a song, what would it be and why?Harmony hasono sportsman You also have a new album coming out! Was the timing on purpose, is this the year of Reiser?!Could you see yourself ever portraying Burke again in any other format, or is this his last hurray? You have a lot of projects going in 2024 not to mention Reboot, which I loved you in. How do you juggle so many projects be it movies like Beverly Hills Cop 4, co-writing a memoir about Michael McDonald, and now a Marvel comic too?Your career spans so many media, do you feel like you’re growing as an artist with each project?

Nathan and I are big Dreamer fans and have been greatly anticipating your graphic novel for some time, but to start, Suicide Squad: Dream Team is out March 12, can you talk about putting together this very unique lineup for the team? You’re so good at capturing the different voice of each character, I particularly liked Waller, how do you approach writing dialogue?Dreamer is still getting acquainted with her powers, some of which we get to see in new ways thanks to Eddy Burrows in the first issue. Is her acclimation to her powers a central part of her character growth?Shifting gears to Bad Dream, a true origin story for our hero, was there a guiding light as far as its focus and tone? We’re Galaxy stans here at AIPT. Tell us about your convos with Jadzia Axelrod when it came time to incorporate Taylor in the book! How fun was it writing Kat, Yvette, and Taylor? The ball in Bad Dream is one of the most joyful things I’ve seen in a comic book. Did you draw on any of your own experiences in building a found family or friend group in this section of the book?Did you and Rye do a lot of back and forth coming up with the unbelievable outfits and crowd scenes here? Take us through your collaboration in general! The dream sequences are gorgeous too.If Bad Dream was a song, what would it be and why?

Interview: Ed Brisson talks about The Displaced, working with artist Luca Casalanguida, Predator, and more!

Sins of the Salton Sea - Out now!

Ed Brisson, thanks for being on the AIPT comics podcast. We both read The displaced, love its trippy twilight zone vibe, what would be the elevator pitch to a reader so as to not give too much away?Oshawa Ontario is a very real place, what made you set it in this location? 6The dynamics of these characters is compelling, which character did you start with when fleshing the cast out?Luca Casalanguida captures a certain level of realism in each panel be it the dashboard of a car, or the trees surrounding the site of the event. What made them the right fit for this project? For anyone who has faced a natural disaster be it a hurricane or tornado, the trauma and emotions these characters go through feels so real and genuine. Have you gone through something like this, albeit less sci-fi in nature? There’s so much backstory implied here. How far out (and back) have you plotted this out?Predator: The Last Hunt #1 is launching later this month, and it’s exciting to see you flesh out Theta in this ongoing journey. What can you say about this third miniseries to get fans hype?Do you see yourself wrapping up Theta’s story any time soon?Give us the scoop, Ed, is there an Alien vs. Predator comic in the works?!Anything else to plug today?

Interview: Zac Thompson (artist Daniel Irizarri) Out February 20 - CEMETERY KIDS DON’T DIE #1 – a near-future descent into a terrifying digital world where each new level has killer consequences! Plunging deep into the uncanny borderlands between science fiction and horror

Please welcome Zac Thompson, your sixth time on the show! To start, Cemetery Kids Don’t Die is out February 20th, blending a 21st century future, with a gaming system called Dreamwave. Where did the idea for this series start?Cemetery Kids Don’t Die is such a great title, did you have it settled right off the bat or did it come organically as you were crafting the story? There’s an organic nature to Dreamwave, it looks like a creature you put on your head, how important was it for you to have an organic approach to this tech?Without knowing the dangers of Dreamwave, would you boot up into a system like this one?Dreamwave feels like an organic (sorry for the pun) direction for a game like Baldurs Gate 3 to evolve into, how much research went into gaming be it RPGs and fantasy to develop this story?Back in December AIPT exclusively revealed designs by Daniel Irizarri. Can you talk about the process of crafting the looks of the in game characters and the characters playing the game?I think fans of D&D will love this, there’s a heavy vibe of that going on, do you play D&D and if so, what’s your favorite character class? You’ve talked before on this show about your mood board, what sort of movies, tv, or comics did you have up while writing this series? If Cemetery Kids Don’t Die was a song what would it be and why?Zac, do you have any other projects you’d like to plug today?

Interview: Tom King (Drawn by Bilquis Evely and Mateus Lopes) - Helen of Wyndhorn (#1 out March 13, 2024) FOC this weekend.

Tom, thanks for being on the AIPT comics podcast! How do you approach character development in your storytelling, particularly when working on brand new characters? The tone and structure feel indebted to Robert E. Howard and maybe even Lovecraft. Were there any other classical authors you turned to in constructing the narrative?I’ve been loving your use of captioning in The Penguin of late, but really all of your captioning shows a strong sense of character and storytelling. When scripting a story like Helen of Wyndhorn, do you start with captions or elsewhere?Early press materials compared this series to Conan the Barbarian and Wizard of Oz, both evoke fantasy, weirdness, and fights, can we expect all those and more in this series?Do you have a favorite iteration of Wizard of Oz and a favorite run on Conan the Barbarian?I’ve loved Bilquis’ work since first seeing her work with Sugar & Spike, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow under your belts, do you have a shorthand working on Helen of Wyndhorn?Something I’ve adored about your work is how to pushes the comics format, which I especially saw with Danger Street. Is this something you’re conscience of? Are you toying with anything in comics format with Helen of Wyndhorn?I imagine we’re in for some creatures in this series, what goes into creature design from your perspective? Last time we spoke you had said Danger Street was done and getting finished, Gotham City Year One was finished, have you scripted every issue of Helen of Wyndhorn?

Interview: Rick Remender - NAPALM LULLABY #1 (on-sale 3/13) Art by Bengal

Rick, thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast. To start, Napalm Lullaby
what a killer title. How did you come up with it?This series plays around with theocracy and societal decay, what made these themes important for this series? You and Bengal have worked together before, what made them right for this project? While this is a sci-fi story with some incredible world building going on, it also opens with a flashback that features an origin that has a familiar ring to a certain superhero. Is this where the bud of the story germinated for you? There’s some high-tech sci-fi stuff going on in Napalm Lullaby, do you ever craft future tech with the thought this could be our future, or is it about achieving something in the story more than anything? There are some sexual scenes in the first issue, which reminded me of the UCLA report saying Gen Z wants less sex in TV and movies, and comics tend to lack them, where do you stand when it comes to sexual themes in their comics?I understand you just signed a 3-year deal with Image and your company Giant Generator. Aside from say, number of titles released, is there a goal you’re trying to reach by the end of the 3 years, or a credo you follow with each project?

for the second time! For those unacquainted with Kill Your Darlings, could you give us the elevator pitch? If you had to sum up the difference between Act One and Act Two of the story in a word, what would it be?The series has spanned multiple time periods, do you guys have a corkboard with red string going this way and that? You’re coming off issue #4, which features people being ripped in half, magic swords, and lots of action, with previous issues being a bit more exploratory of the world and character. What went into thinking about plotting the larger story in this way?1011Bob, your work drawing the sword fight is exceptional, to the point where I wondered, did you swing a big sword around to get the right amount of momentum in the body language? At the core of this story is trauma and seemingly the spill off on our main character. Is this something you draw from your personal life, or were you inspired by something to go this route? It appears the goopy rainbow stuff is evil or related to the enemy. What’s your beef with rainbows y’all!?Issue #5 shifts gears again to another time and place, care to tease what’s to come this new comic book day?The next two issues really go hand in hand with each other. What made 8 issues the right amount for this series? What would the annual issue be?

A thriller, what made you take this angle on Duke?Tom, there’s a lot on your plate, from recreating classic vehicles to possibly updating costumes and looks. What has been the most fun to take on?Probably an impossible question, but did you have a favorite GI Joe growing up?There’s a definitive color story going on here via Jordie Bellaire, the crips oranges lend a certain feel. What is the team going for with how this book is colored? The GI Joe haters might say, “this property is just a bunch of human soldiers without powers running around.” What do you say to them? It’s well known at this point the Decepticons will be acquiring energy via Cobra, or in some capacity that is what’s going on. It’s early yet, but how do you integrate a multi-story robot into a gritty espionage story like Duke?
