Addressing a woman as "Yes ma'am" and "No ma'am" in personal interactions, once considered a respectful word by some, has now become polarizing for others. What do you think? • This scenario was pulled from the headlines. A middle schooler with special needs was turned down when he asked a classmate to be his Valentine in a public performance. • Hun, Babe, Sweetie, Darlin', Lovey--These are all pet names you might hear between couples and family members. Occasionally we encounter them among employees in the workplace and from service workers to their customers. Some find it disrespectful to be called a pet name by someone they barely know. In certain regions of the country, it's more acceptable. There's a lot to unpack about using familiar endearing terms with people in your circle. Join us for this thought-provoking discussion.

  • Welcome to Season 5 of Ethics and Etiquette Podcast. We thought an episode on Apologies would be fairly straightforward, but we were surprised at the deep and rich dialogue which the topic prompted. We've all said or done things--or neglected to say or do things--which caused another to feel harmed or hurt. What belongs in a sincere apology, and what should you leave out? How do you move forward after the apology is offered? Join us for this interesting discussion and send us your thoughts, [email protected].

  • We've all experienced those awkward moments at a restaurant when one check is dropped off and there are three, four, five, or ten people at the table. How can you get the check paid so it's comfortable and fair for all parties? We talk about some proactive strategies and scripts you can use to make it happen. Also in this show, we introduce a new segment called "On a Positive Note" in which we recognize someone or something in our contemporary culture which is uplifting and noteworthy.

The Sebastian Maniscalco excerpt is from his show "What's Wrong With People?" on Netflix, and its appearance here follows the fair use and fair dealing guidelines.

  • How Could This Happen? We put our resident attorney, Kelly, through her paces as we look into the recent Supreme Court leak in the Dobbs vs. Jackson Womens Health Organization Case. An entire draft opinion written by Justice Alito made its way to a reporter, who then published it in Politico. Chief Justice Roberts called the leak "a betrayal and an affront to the Court." Deliberations are privileged information and this represents a serious ethical violation. This case is also intensely political as it's situated at an intersection of privacy, precedent, technology, and medicine. Join us for this exhausting yet educational conversation.

As a counterpoint this week, we discuss a dozen things that you should always say. • Though it's by no means an exhaustive list, here are a dozen or so things you should never say, plus a few general guidelines to keep in mind during conversations. We make a surprising pivot to tell you when it's appropriate to say some things (HINT: It has to do with the nature of the relationship and the context.) We've all said awkward things before (including the podcast panel) so it's a matter of learning from past mistakes and moving forward with more kindness and consideration.

  • We make our own little rules here, and we break our own little rules. In developing this podcast, we didn't want it to be about which fork to use. Relevant, substantive tangles of contemporary life remain our focus, but we occasionally pivot to etiquette in the form of Etiquette Quick Hits. These are clarifications and reminders of basic courtesies that never go out of style, although they may refine through the years. • A New York Times headline recently asked, "Is everyone in politics writing a tell-all?" Then it answered its own question with a resounding "YES." When insiders pen unflattering, embarrassing, and vindictive books about their boss after they leave an administration, is it a breach of trust, or is it an admirable act to reveal these insights to fellow citizens?
