    新聞出處:https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2021/09/05/shang-chi-asian-superhero-big-screen

The Asian comic book character Shang-Chi first appeared in Marvel comics in the early 1970s.
Now Marvel Studios has taken the character to the big screen, offering audiences their first Asian superhero protagonist. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” opened in theaters on Friday, Sept. 3.

Times are slowly changing, and this comic powerhouse has understood the importance of diversity, of changing with the times, and of giving ethnic characters the spotlight, said John Jennings, a media and cultural studies professor at UC Riverside.

When Shang-Chi emerged in comic books, he was mainly promoted as the “Master of Kung Fu,” because kung fu and martial arts connected with Americans. Using the true name, Shang-Chi, in the headline was not as appealing, Jennings said. Comic book publishers capitalized on readers’ interest in martial arts, using it as a marketing tool as opposed to the character’s race and ethnicity, he added.

Shang-Chi’s film character is played by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu. Beyond playing the protagonist, Liu’s role is significant in that Hollywood is moving away from “yellow face,” meaning having non-Asian characters rely on costumes, music, martial arts, makeup, accents, and other stereotypes to portray an Asian character. Yellow face is not a new practice, it has been used by Hollywood for many years, Jennings said.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was written by Dave Callaham, and Asian-American; and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who has Hawaiian ancestry. Having a diverse crew is crucial to getting the right cast and the story to resonate at a deeper level, Jennings said.

  • 新聞出處:https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/05/conan-obrien-is-officially-ending-conan-this-summer

TV’s longest-running late-night host is officially stepping away from his desk. On Monday, Conan O’Brien announced that his current show, Conan, will be airing its final episode on June 24, after 11 seasons on TBS.

The writing was on the wall that Conan would be coming to an end. Last fall TBS parent company WarnerMedia announced that O’Brien had inked a deal to take his talents to streaming and produce a weekly variety show for HBO Max. O’Brien will continue making his Conan Without Borders specials for TBS, though, as well as the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.

O’Brien’s departure from late-night television marks the end of an era. A staple of the genre, O’Brien has been hosting a late-night television program for 28 years, since he took over NBC’s Late Night from David Letterman in 1993. He hosted Late Night until 2009, when he briefly took over NBC’s Tonight Show from Jay Leno. That run came to a dramatic end, though, when the network scheduled a prime-time series hosted by Leno to air nightly before O’Brien’s Tonight Show.

O’Brien and NBC eventually parted ways in January of 2010, with Leno taking over Tonight once more before eventually passing the torch to current host Jimmy Fallon. The very public debacle launched the hashtag #TeamCoco in support of O’Brien and sent the comedian to cable television, where he would launch Conan at TBS in November of 2010.

“For 11 years the people at Turner have been absolutely lovely to me,” O’Brien said in his announcement, adding that the final weeks of Conan will feature a lineup of special guests, take a “fun look back” at his tenure at TBS, and end with an hour-long finale episode.

For example, the company supported the former NFL star, Colin Kaepernick, who famously knelt during the national anthem instead of standing, as a form of a protest against police brutality in the US.Another sneaker brand, Adidas, responded to Nike´s ad in solidarity of the message. • Reading English books, articles, essays, and news possibly is one of the most terrifying activities for a lot of people, because you are going to face many English words. Sometimes, we don't feel that confident reading a foreign language. Here are something you can do. Pick up something you want to read, any news or articles, read it out loud. You might be thinking why do I need to read out loud? It will help you read it deep into your brain. If you get used to this sense, you can read quietly. Another way to help your reading is to preview the material. We all watch the movie trailers, right? We all read playbills for any show we are going to watch. It opens an opportunity for you to understand the material ahead of time. Once you get started, make sure you write a short summary for each paragraph. It doesn't have to be a long sentence, but try to be precise. Make it 2-3 words and simple. In the end, you can put all these words together, it will be much easier for you to comprehend. Here is the last tip that many ESL students struggle with. We usually panic when we don't understand the context, specifically a word. Then, we will get carried away focusing on the translation of the word, which we shouldn't do. We should keep reading. We should figure the context out by reading the entire thing. Yes. Reasoning. Most of the time, translation doesn't work. Why? because it is a completely different language. The structure is different, culture is different and people are different. The translation is just basic. You need to work on your UNDERSTANDING, instead of translating.Good luck!🤟🏻🤟🏻|回饋&合作邀約|Email - [email protected] - https://www.instagram.com/jacker_english/

  • 新聞出處:https://edition.cnn.com/2021/03/03/sport/nba-jeremy-lin-racism-asian-american-spt-intl/index.htmlFormer NBA star Jeremy Lin says he's seen a rise in racism across the US since the coronavirus pandemic started and says the country must address the issue of anti-Asian violence."This has been something that's really blowing up or boiling up for a little bit for me," Lin told CNN's Don Lemon on Tuesday.Currently playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors, the G League affiliate for the Golden State Warriors, Lin says he was recently called "coronavirus" during a basketball game and shared his experience on social media. The 32-year-old hasn't named the perpetrator, insisting he only wants to raise awareness of a more widespread problem. The guard had been playing for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) for much of 2020 and was shocked to witness such racism on his return to the US. "I was removed for about five, six months, and then when I came back, it seemed like things in the US had got even more hostile," he added. He says he was targeted multiple times with racist slurs during his college basketball career but never revealed who those players were. And he believes Covid-19 has simply exposed an underlying problem. Former President Donald Trump received criticism for referring to the coronavirus as the "Chinese virus" during his presidency and Lin said such discourse hasn't helped the bigotry against Asian Americans."It definitely empowered or exacerbated an issue that was already there," he added."I think at the end of the day, what I would love to see, is that people spend more time listening and hearing than judging and condemning."I would love to see cross-cultural solidarity. I would love to see people supporting anti-racism, not just in one people group, but across the board." He said.【單字片語解釋】Perpetrator 行兇的人;犯案的人I was "removed" 我離開了…(後面接地方)Racist slurs 種族歧視主義的毀謗Underlying 潛在的;原本就存在的At the end of the day 無論如合;不管怎麼說;最終|回饋&合作邀約|Email - [email protected] - https://www.instagram.com/jacker_english/
