  • “Hello! Hello! Here we go…”
In an On the House first, Dr Phillip Lee is in the hot seat along with returning guest Alastair Campbell - asking the questions this week is one of the most recognisable voices in Britain, veteran football commentator Clive Tyldesley.
He was in the commentator's box during the Champions League Final in 2005, and during England's defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016, only the second worst British-based national embarrassment of that year. Three points for guessing the first.
He’s one of many in the game who refuse to just “stick to football” and is a strong supporter of a People’s Vote.
He lives in the constituency Phillip hopes to win at the election - and believes the media has let the public down over Brexit. He asks Phillip and Alastair how we got to this point, and where we might go from here.
Thanks to The George pub in Winnersh, and to Phillip's potential constituents who gave us another On The House first - spontaneous applause once the recording wrapped.

  • On The House is back in Westminster this week after a trip up the Westway to Kensington. Dr Philip Lee is away, so Sam takes the wheel.
After Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson’s ITV debate, are we any closer to knowing who’ll step into Number 10 on Friday, December 13th?
Sam is joined by trade policy expert David Henig, who provides a dose of realism to the Brexit debate in his capacity as the director of the UK Trade Policy Project at the European Centre for International Political Economy.
“They’re asking how we can get this trade deal done quickly,” says David. “Perhaps we should be asking how to get it done right…”
Sam and David also discuss the freshly launched Lib Dem manifesto, and who they’d want in the fantasy trade negotiators team. Mourinho does not get a look in.
Thanks to the Hamptons Bar in near St James’ Park for hosting us this week.

  • As Election 2019 gets more intense and even more unpleasant, Phillip Lee and Sam Gyimah head into West London for a drink with a true heavyweight of the Lib Dems – Sir Vince Cable, former leader of the party, Secretary of State for Business, outgoing Twickenham MP and light-footed ballroom dancing legend. What wisdom can he impart to these two new Lib Dem candidates?
Plus: Who’s having the worst General Election campaign so far: the Conservatives or Labour?
Have the Lib Dems finally shaken off the burden of the Coalition? Just how volatile is the electorate? And is Boris Johnson the election winner that the Conservatives think he is?
“People can see Johnson is a rogue,” says Vince. “Once people see they’re being offered two fairly unattractive options, I think they’ll turn to us in numbers.”
Special thanks to the wonderful staff of The Prince in West Brompton for looking after us. Splendid drinks and excellent street food on the doorstep of the constituency Sam hopes to win in December (we recommend the rosemary fries from onsite burger vendor Patty & Bun).

  • It’s a one-to-one pint after Parliament this week. Mike Galsworthy – Final Say vote champion, founder of Scientists For EU and rock star of Remain – joins Phillip Lee for a drink, a political head-to-head on what a Brexit election means for the NHS and science policy… and the obligatory ton of dry-roast peanuts.
This week: The car-crash of Conservative Campaign Week One. How Brexit really could put Britain at the back of the queue for vital new drug launches – and cost us an extra £10bn. Will the country buy a spending splurge from the main parties or the Lib Dems’ Remain bonus? And how the single rudest MP that Phillip ever encountered is now his election opponent in Wokingham: the hard Brexiter John Redwood.
“People who are hard up and resentful of the world around them, often rightly so, they care about who has their back,” says Mike. “Nurses, doctors, the police… these people have their back. We need to convince people that science has their back.”
Hold tight, regular listeners. Sam Gyimah will be back next week.

  • As the Election Battle is finally joined, MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee are joined for a pre-poll pint by their former Conservative colleague Dominic Grieve - the Parliamentary giant who put his career on the line to hold back No Deal, and ensure that Parliament got a Meaningful Say on Brexit. Dominic Grieve is now running as an independent in Beaconsfield, and Sam’s standing in Kensington. How will these experienced MPs handle a General Election where all the rules have been torn up?
Plus: Is Boris Johnson’s election punt a gamble too far? Is the abuse that has driven many MPs out of Parliament really representative of what British voters think? What sort of election campaign are we in for? Who will we miss from the Parliament of 2017-2019? Who’s going to win the rugby? And Dominic eats the most enormous sausage sandwich you’ve ever seen.
“The Tory Remain vote is 4-5 million and if they want to Remain, they’ve can’t vote Conservative. It’s that simple.”

  • As Boris Johnson edges his Brexit Deal a bit further than Theresa May did – but not much – MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee lift the lid on the tatty trade-offs that had to happen in Parliament for Johnson to claim a victory. They’re joined by special guest IAN DUNT of politics.co.uk and the Remainiacs podcast for an uncut look at the underbelly of Parliamentary politics.
Why does passing the Deal mean more – and worse – squabbling over Brexit than we’ve already got? How are Conservative and Labour MPs deceiving themselves? Why does Macron’s hardman posturing on Brexit add up to bad politics at home in France as well as on the European stage? Is the Deal just a trapdoor to No Deal? Can Ian persuade Sam and Phillip to start reading comic books? And just how many packets of Nobby’s Nuts can these guys consume?
All this and the Ghost of Ramsay MacDonald too. Listen up. You don’t get political discussion like this on Radio 4.
“This government knows how to come up with pithy one-liners and hashtags – but it’s no way to govern a country.”

  • Boris Johnson prepares to put his Deal to the Commons. Hundreds of thousands of people get ready to descend on London to march for a Final Say vote. As Britain braces itself for Brexit’s moment of truth, MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee join special guest ALASTAIR CAMPBELL for an eve-of-battle conflab.
What’s the truth about Johnson’s Deal? Does it in any way resemble what was sold in the Referendum? What do the Commons numbers look like for Saturday’s vote? Is there a realistic route to that Final Say – and would Remain win it? And what are the prospects for British politics if the Johnson-Cummings project succeeds?
Plus Sam and Phillip quiz Alastair on Labour’s internal struggle over antisemitism. And is Brexit rooted in a collapse of faith in politics that perhaps began under New Labour? It’s a fascinating conversation between three experienced political figures.
“We in politics or the media – the bubble – we tend to really like change,” says Alastair Campbell. “We like pace and excitement and stuff happening. But a lot of people find change is just really challenging.”

  • There’s much more happening in politics this week than can be contained within the walls of the Houses of Parliament. As the radical climate change movement Extinction Rebellion stages disruptive protests all over the world, MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee share a drink with one of its spokespeople, former Green councillor Sarah Lunnon, about what makes the Rebellion run.
Can idealism and practical politics come together? Is there a sweet spot between XR’s demands for an emergency carbon crash-course that will totally transform society, and people’s immediate needs? Do emergencies make for dangerous leadership? How does Sarah rate the Lib Dems’ environmental record? And if climate change affects all of us, how do we harness our confused politics to focus on it? All this plus your favourite Boris Johnson/Donald Trump nightmares… and what our panel will be up to over the weekend.

  • The pint after Parliament podcast returns with special guest WILL HUTTON – Observer columnist, Principal of Hertford College at Oxford and tribune of Keynesianism – joining MPs Phillip Lee and Sam Gyimah to gaze in amazement at the latest week in politics.
Is there anyone around who believes that Boris Johnson’s arcane buffer zone scheme isn’t just a fake solution designed to be rejected by the EU? Are the EU just being polite with Britain – and for how long? Will Parliament even get to vote on Johnson’s one-sided “deal”? And if Johnson isn’t really the Pep Guardiola of politics, then which footballer is he?
Plus, Will talks some serious systemic economics with our regulars. Are we on the brink of the actual, for-real reset in Capitalism that we’ve been told was coming for years? What’s gone wrong with the Officer Class and why has Britain become so awful at producing decent leaders? Is there anything left of Toryism in the free-spending modern Conservative Party? Who is Will “certain” will win the 2020 US Presidential Election? Plus, hear Sam and Phillip blush as Will praises their courage for sticking to their principles.
“Be in no doubt, Johnson knows this idea might bring the DUP and the Europhobes behind him – but it can’t be accepted by Ireland or the European Union. We’re down to the blame game.”

  • “UTTERLY EXTRAORDINARY AND DEEPLY SHAMEFUL”: Parliament is back but the Prime Minister and his lieutenants’ vicious opening performance left the country completely aghast. On their latest pints-after-politics podcast, MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee plus special guest Stephen Doughty (Labour/Co-Op MP for Cardiff South and Penarth) give their honest and unvarnished eyewitness account of this, the most unpleasant and shameful display in the Commons in recent memory.
What was the Government trying to achieve? What on earth happened with Geoffrey Cox, the Attorney General? And what will the consequences be? “[This week] was a crossing of the line that I’ve never, ever seen,” says Stephen Doughty. “Johnson’s response was utterly extraordinary and deeply shameful.”
Plus: How was Stephen the first MP to discover that Operation Prorogue was actually under way? (Wait til you hear who he rang and what Rees-Mogg thought about it). How is No.10 politicising the police? Do we have a government or a permanent election campaign? Will there even be that Queen’s Speech we were told is so important? Oh, and how does pro-Final Say MP Stephen feel about the Labour Conference’s decision to stick with their inscrutable Brexit policy? Smart politics, stitch-up or something else…?
“Boris Johnson is now a do nothing, break everything Prime Minister.” – Sam Gyimah

  • The Telegraph’s Whitehall Editor OWEN BENNETT joins stereo MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee for this week’s edition of the candid pints-after-politics podcast.
On the agenda: What happens when the people running the system want to smash the system? Will the Supreme Court challenge to prorogation remake or break Britain’s constitution? Is Jo Swinson’s promise to revoke Article 50 good politics or bad strategy for the Lib Dems? And after Owen torpedoed Michael Gove’s Conservative leadership chances after certain “revelations” in his biography of the inscrutable minister, might the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster make it to the top job one day after all? Plus new Lib Dem recruit Sam admits he’s joined the party’s all-singing Glee Club…
We started the podcast with two Conservative MPs and now we’ve got two Lib Dems. Whatever next?

  • This week on the candid pint-after-Parliament podcast, MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee are joined by special guest MARIE LE CONTE, political commentator and writer for the Guardian, New Statesman and more.
Is the Boris Johnson-Dominic Cummings government digging itself into an ever-deeper hole? How will this mess get sorted? What’s the real power of political gossip? And how many bags of Nobby’s Nuts will be consumed this week…? There’s only one way to find out.

  • ON THE HOUSE, the candid pint-after-Parliament podcast with MPs Sam Gyimah and Phillip Lee, returns for a full series — and we’ve certainly picked the right week for it. Phillip crossed the floor to join the Lib Dem right in the middle of Boris Johnson’s first PMQs. Sam lost the Tory whip after rebelling over No Deal. And so did special guest GUTO BEBB, Aberconwy MP and fellow member of the 21 rebels.
What WILL they talk about? Take your pick from open civil war in the Tory party, constitutional chaos, the election that maybe can’t be, and the future of conservatism in a radicalised party. Listen in for a frontline perspective on a pivotal moment in British history. And don’t forget to subscribe to ON THE HOUSE.
