  • This week we’re doing things a little bit different than usual. Kat had a rough go over the last week and ended up in the hospital for a bit. She’s back home now but she’s busy resting up so we’re going to rerelase one of our £10+ Patreon bonus episodes to everyone this week so she can keep recuperating. Currently our £10+ patrons are just our moms and they agreed to let us release this to everyone considering the circumstances! So enjoy and we'll keep you updated on what's happening going forward!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------In November 2011, the world renowned Knoedler art gallery announced it would be permanently closing after 165 years in business. The New York City institution made no real mention of why they were shutting the doors, only referencing vague “business reasons.” But behind the scenes, things were stormy, scandalous, and criminal.Today we look into the world of high class art collecting, a world we have no experience with whatsoever! We’re telling you all about the $80 million forgery scandal that went on for nearly 20 years and brought down one of New York City’s oldest and most influential art galleries.Check out some of the fake paintings above and let us know what you think of the episode and the scandal. Could you have spotted the difference between the fakes and the real thing?FURTHER READING:https://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2012/05/knoedler-gallery-forgery-scandal-investigation (The Knoedler Gallery Forgery Scandals and Shuttering—Who’s to Blame?)https://www.artnews.com/art-news/artists/the-big-fake-behind-the-scenes-of-knoedler-gallerys-downfall-6179/ (The Big Fake: Behind the Scenes of Knoedler Gallery’s Downfall)https://www.netflix.com/search?q=made&jbv=81406333 (Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art - Netflix) https://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/26/arts/design/authenticity-of-trove-of-pollocks-and-rothkos-goes-to-court.html (Authenticity of Trove of Pollocks and Rothkos Goes to Court)https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/23/arts/design/knoedler-art-jose-carlos-bergantios-diaz.html (From Afar, a Fugitive in the Knoedler Art Fraud Gives His Defense)https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/apr/22/forged-art-scandal-new-york-artist-china-spain (Artist at centre of multimillion dollar forgery scandal turns up in China)https://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/31/arts/design/pei-shen-qians-paintings-examined.html (Pei-Shen Qian's Paintings Examined)https://news.artnet.com/market/knoedler-forger-claims-innocence-62144 (Knoedler Forger Claims Innocence)-----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show? • In 1954 Marilyn Reese Sheppard was brutally murdered in her home in Bay Village, Ohio an upscale suburb of Cleveland. If you take the media’s word for it, her killer was none other than her husband, Sam Sheppard. But the case isn’t as simple as it seems, and even three trials spanning 50 years weren’t able to come to a definite conclusion. This week we get into all the details of all the trials, other possible suspects, and even a detour into professional wrestling. Despite not having Helga's parents' permission to marry, the two seemed like every other young couple in love. But everything fell apart after a trip to Edinburgh's Salisbury Crags. FURTHER READING:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4034710-close-and-deadly (Close & Deadly: Chilling Murders in the Heart of Edinburgh (Alanna Knight))https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2012/10/the-infamous-salisbury-crags-murder/ (The Infamous Salisbury Crags Murder)https://www.scotsman.com/news/dumoulin-case-romance-ended-brutal-killing-2444126 (Dumoulin case: Romance ended in brutal killing)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAJL5Os9H_E (Theme from A Love Story) -----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show? • Even the most seemingly respectable orphanages and adoption companies can be a front for child tracking rings, and today we’re going to tell you the story of one such organisation: The Tennessee Children’s Home Society, sometimes known as the Georgia Tann Children’s Home. The Tennessee Children's Home Society began as a non-profit orphanage in 1897. But in the 1920s, under the direction of Georgia Tann, it served as a child trafficking hub. Estimates say that nearly 5,000 children were stolen by Tann and sold for a profit. FURTHER READING:https://www.insider.com/georgia-tann-tennessee-children-home-society-survivors-speak-out-2019-12 (How a woman stole 5,000 babies and made money off their adoptions)https://nypost.com/2017/06/17/this-woman-stole-children-from-the-poor-to-give-to-the-rich/ (This woman stole children from the poor to give to the rich)http://archive.commercialappeal.com/entertainment/author-spent-16-years-delving-into-the-power-georgia-tann-wielded-and-the-victims-she-left-ep-398841-323991321.html (Author spent 16 years delving into the power Georgia Tann wielded and the victims she left)https://tennesseechildren.tripod.com/tennesseechildrenshomestolenbabies/id2.html (Investigation into the Tennessee Children’s Home)https://www.nchgs.org/html/a_story_of_stolen_babies.html (Georgia Tann: A Story of Missing Babies)https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/The_Children_of_Georgia_Tann (Unsolved Mysteries: The Children of Georgia Tann)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Tann (Georgia Tann (Wiki))https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_Children%27s_Home_Society (Tennessee Children’s Home Society (Wiki))https://www.joancrawfordbest.com/articlememphis95.htm (Commercial Appeal Crawford twins article 9/11/95)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qY0UxpnwUg (Missing Children: A Mother’s Story (1982) Youtube)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEPS470x5S4 (Stolen Babies (1993) Youtube)-----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show? • Can decades of preaching in prisons wipe out a youth filled with crime? That's what Jack Roland Murphy AKA Murf the Surf tried to do. He was involved in the biggest jewel heist in New York City history, won surfing championships, scaled Miami Beach buildings as a cat burglar, and ultimately landed in prison for two brutal murders. Today we tell the story of his life and crimes and discuss whether Murf's devotion to religion in and after prison can make up for the havoc he wreaked as a young surfer dude. • The phrases “stranger than fiction” and “you couldn’t make it up” are frequently attached to a whole plethora of true crime cases, every documentary, book and podcast evenly remotely related to true crime has utter those phrases. But we think we have found one of the greatest “stranger than fiction, you couldn’t make it up” cases. One evening in late June 2003, 16-year-old Mark lured his friend, 14-year-old John, into an alley in an area known as Goose Green, which is in Altrincham, an affluent suburb of Manchester. Moments later, Mark took out a knife, told John he loved him, and then stabbed him in his chest and stomach. About 20 minutes after the attack, Mark pulled the knife from John’s body. As his friend bled onto the street, Mark dialled 999 and told the dispatcher that a man had stabbed his friend and then fled. How did John and Mark end up here? FURTHER READING:https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2004/may/29/crime.uknews (Bizarre tale of boy who used internet to plot his own murder)https://www.grunge.com/300405/the-truth-about-the-first-person-in-uk-history-to-be-charged-with-their-own-attempted-murder/ (THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FIRST PERSON IN UK HISTORY TO BE CHARGED WITH THEIR OWN ATTEMPTED MURDER)https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2005/02/bachrach200502 (“U WANT ME 2 KILL HIM?” - Vanity Fair)https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/70243568 (U Want Me 2 Kill Him - Netflix)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licence_to_kill_(concept) (Licence to Kill)https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/internet-murder-boys-told-never-1110248 (Internet 'murder' boys told: Never see each other again)-----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show? • In the early 1990s, a stoic man pulled off a string of bank robberies in the Dallas suburbs. He was dubbed “Cowboy Bob” by the FBI agents who were left scratching their heads trying to find him. When they finally found him, Cowboy Bob turned out to be quite the surprise. The first bank robbery occurred in May 1991 at the American Federal Bank in Irving Texas. Cowboy Bob walked into the bank and up to a young female teller. He was about 5’10” tall, a large imposing man with a bit of a paunch. He was white with greying hair, looked to be in his mid-forties, and had a big bushy mustache and beard. He wore a brown leather jacket, leather gloves, oversized aviator sunglasses, and a large white 10-gallon cowboy hat, backwards. The teller said: “Hello, sir. How may I help you?”But Cowboy Bob remained silent. He simply handed her a note that read: “This is a bank robbery. Give me your money. No marked bills or dye packs.”The teller was stunned but did what the note said and handed over a large stack of money from her drawer. Bob nodded and shoved the money into a bag and calmly walked out of the bank. He got into an orange 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix and drove away.Over the next year Cowboy Bob struck again and again, always robbing banks calmly and making a clean getaway. Listen in to hear how the FBI tracked down this sneaky outlaw!FURTHER READING:https://thisiscriminal.com/episode-140-cowboy-bob-5-15-2020/ (Cowboy Bob | Criminal)https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/the-last-ride-of-cowboy-bob/ (The Last Ride of Cowboy Bob – Texas Monthly)https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2005/may/06/bank-robber-shot-dead-in-texas/ (Bank robber shot dead in Texas)https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna10367955 (Cowboy Bob's last ride)https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/The-Last-Ride-of-Cowboy-Bob-Audiobook/B078KPW682 (The Last Ride of Cowboy Bob Audiobook | Skip Hollandsworth)https://listverse.com/2019/03/21/10-unbelievable-facts-about-cowboy-bob/ (10 Unbelievable Facts About Cowboy Bob)https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/503647/cowboy-bob-mysterious-middle-aged-bank-robber-who-fooled-fbi (Cowboy Bob: The Mysterious Middle-Aged Bank Robber Who Fooled the FBI)https://allthatsinteresting.com/cowboy-bob (The Twisted Life Of Cowboy Bob, The Robber Who Fooled The FBI)https://variety.com/2017/film/news/michael-showalter-the-last-ride-of-cowboy-bob-the-big-sick-1202547007/ (Michael Showalter to Direct ‘The Last Ride of Cowboy Bob’ for Fox Searchlight (EXCLUSIVE))https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSW0Sz7icRc (Peggy Jo Tallas)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV5E7Wqyfb0 (Cowboy Bob The Texas Bank Robber (Peggy Jo Tallas))https://variety.com/2020/film/global/lily-james-phillip-noyce-peggy-jo-1234632789/ (Lily James to Star in Phillip Noyce’s True Crime Love Story ‘Peggy Jo’)https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/53001390/peggy-jo-tallas (Peggy Jo Tallas (1944-2005) - Find a Grave)https://www.texasmonthly.com/interactive/tom-browns-body/ (Tom Brown's Body - Skip Hollandsworth's podcast)-----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show? • We’re picking up where we left off last week with the story of serial killer, Charles Sobhraj, nicknamed the Serpent for his ability to slither out of pretty much every situation including multiple prisons in Europe, the middle east, and India. We wrapped up last week in 1975 when Sobhraj had tricked his younger brother Andre into taking his place in a Greek jail. The Greek prison service weren’t happy about this trick. So, Andre was then extradited to neighbouring Turkey where he was sentenced to 18 years hard labour for a string of robberies and scams that the pair had carried out between 1973 and 1975.Sobhraj once again hit the hippie trail, this time heading for Thailand, pulling small time scams to pay his way, but he had grand plans for this next phase of his life.FURTHER READING:https://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sobhraj-charles.htm (Charles Sobhraj - Murderpedia)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Sobhraj (Charles Sobhraj - Wikipedia)https://www.indiatimes.com/culture/who-we-are/12-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-infamous-charles-sobhraj-233025.html (12 Things You Didn't Know About The Infamous Charles Sobhraj)https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/crime-files/charles-sobhraj-the-serpent/crimes (The Serpent -The Crimes)https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/crime-files/charles-sobhraj-the-serpent/timeline (The Serpent - Timeline)-----------------------------------------------https://pod.link/1499149474 (Like the show?
