'Ulysses and the Cyclops'-Adaped by Andrew Lang from the Greek classic 'Homer', this story places Ulysses in the hero's seat as he and his men are trapped on an island occupied by one-eyed giants called Cyclops- and they have a nasty penchant for eating sailors and roasting their remains. Ulysses is known for his "McGuyver" like abilites to find smart ways out of trouble- and he gets busy fast.
Caesar Crosses The Rubicon'.. All of us have had to make serious decisions- and there is always one point at which it is too late to change your mind and head back to safety. Such was Caesar's decision to cross the Rubicon with his army as he traveled toward Rome to reclaim it from his adversary. This is the story, adapted by James Baldwin.

Edgar Allan Poe wasn't just known for horror- he also had a sense of humor and a deep sense of justice for those who had been wronged. In this story, a French king who likes to play extravagent jokes on his guests decides to use his two dwarfs, which had been captured and sent to him by one of his generals, as the evenings' entertainment. The man dwarf, HopFrog, had earned that name from the King due to his crippled leg which kept him from standing up straight, and causing him to hop using his strong arms to help him move. Tripetta was also a dwarf, very pretty, and an excellent dancer. The two had become close friends since their capture. On this night the king becomes abusive- and Hop Frog includes a surprise in the evening's entertainment.

In 1925 Hemingway's collection of his first short stories appeared as In Our Time, and included the cryptic The Three Day Blow. He begins with a memory of WWI, then gives us a dialogue between Nick Adams (Hemingway's alter -ego in his early stories) and a friend as they spend a few days drinking at his friend's fathers lodge. The theme is baically to portray a 'lost generation' of young men after the war who had no desire to do much with their lives, including getting married and raising children. There is a lot of "He said" and simple dialogue but this style was new and appealed to a younger audience of readers. It would be years before Hemingway reached his peak but this collection started him on his path.
