The UK is introducing new regulation that means that anyone developing land will have to demonstrate a net gain of 10% improvement in biodiversity. Rob talks to Ben Jacob, author of the outstanding book "The Orchid Outlaw" and Richard Flemmings, founder of a geospatial start up called Map Impact.

We discuss the book, orchids, ecosystems of nature and our confidence in the regulation having a positive impact. Occasionally you meet someone who challenges and inspires you. This was most definitely the case with Iliana Grosse-Buening, concert pianist, global entrepreneur and with a passion for Digital Wellbeing.

Rob and Iliana talk about the correlation between her love for music and her passion to enable people to connect more with those around them and themselves, by helping them think more about their #DigitalWellbeing. With her business Quiet Social Club, she is helping organisations and employees think and act differently to find an improved balance.

For the past couple of years, I've been fascinated by a London clothing start up called Vollebak. Vollebak makes 'clothes from the future' - as they state, OUR CLOTHING TACKLES THE FUNDAMENTAL CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME - and specifically across their key missions of Climate, Space, Sustainability and Health.

In February, GoForIT launched the Norwegian version of the CDR Manifesto, which you can find here . My thanks to Leif, Pia and Ida for their support with that translation. A few months on, we return to Norway (virtually) to talk again with Leif, Pia and Anders about their thoughts on the need for Digital Responsibility in Norway, and the collaborative approach between public and private sector, academia, enterprise and SME that is driving the evolution of Digitalt Samfunnsansvar, or Digital Societal Responsibility. Really insightful conversation about "Wickedly complex problems" and a desire for local examples, mapped out to the Principles of the Manifesto to inspire others to follow.

My many thanks to our guests Pia Virmalainen Jøsendal, Leif Skiftenes Flak and Anders Waage Nilsen.

  • There was NO way we could cover all the things we wanted to in the 37 minutes of this fantastic chat with Joe, but it's well worth a listen to hear what we did cover! From Data Scientist, to UX Design Consultant at Google, to leaving to write his book "Automating Humanity", an appearance in the Social Dilemma and the current launch of his new business Datagrade, Joe talks about a common thread about privacy, data and in essence, digital human rights. It's a great conversation, and one that I'd like to revisit in a year or so to see how the business launch has progressed.

Joe Toscano,  CEO and Founder of DataGrade,  is a former Google Experience Design Consultant turned privacy advocate. You may have read his book, Automating  Humanity, seen him as a Featured Expert in Netflix's The Social Dilemma,  or watched his TED Talk, “Want  to work for Google? You already do,”

  • In conversation with Paul Finnis, CEO The Learning Foundation and the Digital Poverty Alliance and Andrea Ravnik, Head of Amazon in the Community, UK. Paul leads the DPA, working with a range of organisations to help ensure that the impact of Digital Poverty is minimised in the UK, and more children and parts of the community who are not connected, empowered and inspired are able to play an active part in the Digital Economy. Andrea is the Amazon lead for their work in the Community in the UK and plays an active role in the DPA.

The work of the DPA - illustrated by their vision, mission and 'what we do' below - is clearly aligned to the Second and Third Principle of the International CDR Manifesto and, like the CDR movement, is referenced in the recently launched UN EP backed CODES Global Action Plan for Sustainable Planet in the Digital Age.

    Our vision.

To live in a world which enables everyone to access the life changing benefits that digital brings.

    Our mission.

To end digital poverty once and for all by 2030

  • In conversation with Joe Zammit-Lucia on the relationship between Business, Politics and Digital/Tech, covering everything from his latest book "The New Political Capitalism" through to Facebook and the Metaverse. We explored how and why technology is highly political. Where do responsibilities lie for a Digital Responsibility that ensures positive outcomes for society and the planet? How do we shift the focus from shiny 'technology' to what technological advances are achieving for our societies? Our conclusion is that tech businesses must take the lead to establish a much more effective collaborative process between the political/policy realms and business, big tech as well as others.

Dr Zammit-Lucia is the author of “The New Political Capitalism" (Bloomsbury, 2022). • We launched the International CDR Manifesto on the 1st October, 2021, as a year long collaborative effort between an international group of established CDR experts, academics, published authors and corporate practitioners. This work built on our own individual work, and recognised some of the other great work in this field over the past three years to bring an open source, Creative Commons framework to the market that enabled organisations to better think about the impact of their use of digital on creating a more positive impact on the planet and society.

This second of a mini-series of podcasts, with Christopher Joynson, co-founder of the Manifesto, lexplores Christopher's own introduction to CDR,  his background to the collaboration and looks at vulnerability in the context of Digital Responsibility. We specifically explore the 3rd and 4th Principles of the International CDR Manifesto - Societal Wellbeing (data privacy, governance, digital maturity and digital wellbeing) and Consider Economic & Societal Impact (sustainable automation, verifiable 3rd party data & algorithms and new economic models) and look forward to further evolution in 2022.

The team behind the manifesto includes Dr Saskia Dörr, Professor Michael Wade, Tim Frick, Oliver Merx, Christopher Joynson and Rob Price, all of whom have been involved in introducing or regularly discussing definitions of CDR over the past five years.
